Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

Few hypotheses:

1. Dub faggotry persists even from the Japanese video game/anime western fandom world.
2. There's probably a case of "native authenticity" going on here. Day is famous for being in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which as its title states, it's set in the East Coast of the US, and that gives him more credit for being Mario. I don't even know what state or region of the country Pratt is from, but that's none of my business.

That's all I can think of.
Yeah, I think there is a lot of bias against Pratt for much of what that ANN poster said. I think the controversy is overblown but at the same time, it is weird that Mario doesn't sound exactly like Mario. It'd be like if Mickey Mouse was played by the Rock or Winnie the Pooh was played by Vin Diesel. I think Pratt is at least trying but he's just not striking that balance.
I dislike Pratt's direction because he sounds just passable and feels off. Days voice just feels like a natural fit for Luigi.

I would say this is more on the Director and Nintendo's fault since Nintendo for some reason really wants Mario to have a very miscast voice given the voice he had in the Japanese version also sounds extremely off.
Days was a great choice for Luigi, his frantic energy matches him perfectly. Pratt's voice is dry and middle of the road, like he's trying but not hard enough. I don't know who they could have gotten to fit Mario like Days did with Luigi, but maybe they should have got someone with more range. I think Bill Hader could have probably pulled it off, or at least have a better interpretation of Mario's voice.

if only there was some professional voice actor who was still active after over a quarter century of voicing Mario

I think for some reason they wanted Mario to sound cool since in the Japanese version he's voiced by Mamoru Miyano who sounds like one of his typical anime pretty boy roles

I expect this shit to be worse than the old ass OVA or the fucking american mario tv show for the simple fact that both of those series knew the mario world was retarded and never took themselves that seriously
It still probably took it more "seriously" than this might in terms of Modern "Quips" and not being able to take anything with a remote grain of sincerity.

I think at least a 60% chance that Jack Black carries this entire movie just because this version Bowser looks like be a bit silly because he knows he is the badguy and ABSOLUTELY LOVES EVERY MOMENT OF IT. He isn't a warlord for a reason of Morality, Or for Power and Glory (even if he likes those things.) he is playing the game because it is fun as hell.

Calm down you nerds. She's a fictional princess that barely has a personality outside of the RPG games.

It's really not that serious. Besides, we haven't even seen her entire character yet.
Ah yes, the "why do you care bro, it's just fiction bro" gambit. By that logic the 90s Mario movie was perfectly fine since duh, fiction. And if tomorrow Mario is a genderqueer wheelchair magical abuela it's fine cause it's fiction!

Yes, I'm not that deranged to say this movie is a travesty to all that is Mario, Peach is clearly off, Mario is not ideal, doesn't help that both their tropes are done to death nowadays. But the "it's fiction" gambit is absolute bullshit since it translates into "never care about anything", that sort of shit got us to the current cesspit of media.
It's implied she might be putting on a façade of being an airhead depending on the game/series she's in. Here's one example that, although it failed, there was an attempt made. (Timecoded.)

It being a façade isn't what the movie is going for though, seems pretty bog standard strong whamen character. This doesn't surprise me from Illumination but I expected Miyamoto to mark more territory.

I mean, that Pratt sounds off doesn't change that post on ANN being right. Pratt along with Hemsworth is one of the few actors that has any sort of star power yet the first is constantly shat on. I can't be the only one that noticed how they made Star Lord an absolute joke of a character after the first film, getting the special honor of fucking everything up vs Thanos.

But he doesn't click as Mario, he sounds too... "serious" if I had to use a word. And Peach leaving aside characterization should be higher pitched. Bowser... is not what I had in mind but works well, Luigi seems better but need to hear more.

Again, it's not that serious. It's a kids movie, so it not completely catering to older Mario fans is to be expected. We haven't even seen the movie or the entirety of the characters in it yet, so can we please temper our expections before we go full "modern movies bad" on it?

Found another downgrade, god I hate the Western animation industry.

No DSL Peach, why even live anymore?

I'll be honest both Peach and Mario look like shit imo, they have weird proportions and their faces are completely off, I also dont like the use of realistic matetials

"It's a kids movie, who cares if Ariel is now a nigger or if Lefou sucks dick mate"

It's not so much that it's just fiction, it's more that Mario has never really been consistent or had any kind of overarching continuity with anything whether it be story or characters or anything else. Every piece of media in the Mario franchise is basically its own thing that barely has any connection to anything else other than being about an Italian plumber who wears a red and blue outfit named Mario. Getting worked up because the characters aren't a perfect match to whatever your idea of them is is pretty ridiculous.

I love how they think Charles Martinet is a box office draw. Studios hire known actors for voice over roles since it helps the marketing for parents that will end up watching the film. The fact that Chris Pratt annoys them is also a nice plus. I never kept up with the games past Super Mario World, so I'm unfamiliar with the differences between Peach and Daisy. Bowser and Koopa are the same, but it depends on how Nintendo decided to translate the game? I thought that Lou Albano was the first guy to voice Mario.

iirc first voiced Mario was Peter "Prime" Cullen for the USA Donkey Kong cartoon
