Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

From what I've heard, the movie is pretty much exactly what I expected.

Bright, colorful, looks like the games, and fun for kids, but has issues like a lacking story and celeb voice actors that get in the way.

I really wish they had just gotten the video game voice actors and make it a low dialogue movie like Wall-E. I think that would have captured the spirit of the game more. At the very least, I'd have liked to have professional voice actors doing the characters rather than a bunch of celebrities with little to no vocal range.

I've been seething on this thread since the trailers dropped so it's only fair I give my opinion.

Spoiler free: It's a fun family movie. It goes too fast but it has a cohesive story, as much as you can do with the Mario universe. It isn't woke and Peach is not the badass ultra girlboss the trailers implied. The pop songs on the movie aren't egregious, they're all pandering to millenial parents IMO.

Miyamoto probably never dreamt in making a Mario universe this expansive. The original games follow the classic archetypes of literature, with fantasy-like elements that Miyamoto thought were funny or just don't translate well in the west. That being said, Mario is “problematic” now because it has a damsel in distress and a raptor.

Making a movie like that would be a big no-no today, and I think it's fairly okay to make Peach more competent than what she is in (mainline) Mario games. I don't care if this obscure 80s manga has Peach as a butch lesbian, in the games everybody and their mother knows she is saved by Mario. The movie doesn't make her Rei-style girlboss, but she's actually somewhat charismatic and *gasp* femenine. That's good because she feels somewhat true to her character. I'm more annoyed that Luigi wasn't made more of a pussy, actually.

A t the end, it is a Mario (and Luigi) movie and they save the day. I don't like that they used a super star, I would've rather have them use the fire flower (something that the movie actively goes in its way to avoid Mario from getting). It was the same with the Sonic movie and Super Sonic, it's just lazy. But the fight was already going on for too long, so I'm glad they cut it.

I liked the beginning in Brooklyn and the initial commercial. It was really cute. I like that they made him acrobatic even before going to the Mushroom Kingdom, that's probably the biggest quality Mario has: he jumps like a motherfucker.

Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised. Though I had zero expectations for this movie, so it's a low bar.

Just saw the movie today, it was better than I expected.
Jack Black as Bowser was easily the best part and I love how they went for his personality in the rpg games for this.
Kegan Michael Key as Toad really felt like Toad same as Charlie Day as Luigi. I wish Luigi was in this movie more. I really want to see a Luigi spin off movie from this.
Peach feels more like a compromise decision between two studios than being herself. Like what people on here have said, she is Daisy but without the "I am Daisy". We are lucky that Peach could have been a lot worse in this movie than what we got.
Chris Prat as Mario was just ok, at times he feels like Mario but at large parts of the movie it felt very phoned in.
I really did not like Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.
The rest of the cast was fine.
There was a lot of moments in the movie that makes you point and go "I know what that is!" I don't want to praise the movie just for references but they are very cleverly interwoven into the plot.
The biggest problem of this movie is that everything is at a breakneck rushed pace and nothing is allowed to breath and take a moment.

I'll still never understand why Charles Martinet couldn't voice Mario. This movie was going to make whatever money it would regardless of a celeb like Chris Pratt voicing him. And as you said, it's pretty much what anyone with common sense expected: not that good as a movie but fun and crowd pleasing for young people.

I doubt the higher ups would have ever wanted a low dialogue movie though. I'm sure many higher ups believe that, since the movie's primary audience is children, that wouldn't be the way to go.

IIRC, the directors of the movie are also the people behind Teen Titans Go, so that makes a lot of sense. They were probably hired to make something that was maximum crowd pleaser and a movie that has lots of breathing room might theoretically bore the younger crowd.

The overall movie is good for what it is. It's around Sonic 1's quality. Has a bigger flaw though.

Pratt does a fine Mario. Mario himself is done well and is a scrappy big damn hero in this. DK is entertaining.

Bowser is perfect and carried the middle part of the movie. Like he was the perfect mash of a goofball and a menacing threat.

Blue Paratrooper is a Chad.

Sidelining Luigi is probably the most baffling choice this movie got because it feels like Luigi is supposed to be with Mario more. Like, Mario and Luigi's scenes together were the best parts of the movie. Like Luigi being with the group ala Super Mario Bros 2/Super Show feels like it would have cleaned up the middle better and made the finale have a little bit more punch. "This should be Luigi" is a thought that kept happening with Mario's traveling with Peach, speaking of...

Peach is downright maddening and is the worst part of this movie. I believe WDW Pro's thing about Nintendo reigning in the writers on Peach. Because good God, they refused to have Peach have a moment of weakness. She GOTTA do an action-girl thing in everything scene she's in. It's a gross overcorrection. Even then I won't mind if they had her do stuff in a Peachy way. Like, s aces the course because she floats, She doesn't do karate poses, She uses her parasol, etc. Everyone else moves like they should, except Peach. She moves in the most out-of-character way. The maddening part is that they had these moments where she was acting Peachy-like, like the cutest thing she did all movie was being amazed at Mario being another human. There was potential for a more in-character Peach, but it was fighting against movie Peach throughout the whole movie. Give back Daisy's personality!

That being said, Mario being THE hero of the movie, Bowser being perfect, and DK actually being fun, made those bits way more forgiving.

Prolly watch it again on a cheap night.

I think the thing with picking Chris Pratt mainly had to do with how Illumination believes celebrities help sell a movie and some of the people at Nintendo wanted big actors to voice Mario since in the Japanese version they had a A-List VA to do Mario's voice as opposed to Mario's regular Japanese VA

Im still going with critics are humorless cunts .

Both: Critics are humorless retarded cunts.
Critics are humorless retarded cunts with an agenda.

I haven't seen the movie. But I'm happy that it turn out better than we expected and holds true to itself and the Mario source materia. I'm happy the critics hate it that means its good and isn't woke if they hate it but fans and average movie goers like it.

as opposed to Mario's regular Japanese VA
iirc I saw there is a JP dub cast list and the VA for him but isn't Furuya, dunno how long it's been since he was Mario, but iirc as part of that Japanese law that 90% of Main Characters must be voiced by him he was Mario from... I think the OVA or early TV ads through the SatellaView stuff, like basically until Martinet got on-board.

My thoughts:

Movie was just okay. It felt more like an Illumination movie with a Mario skin on it than an actual Mario film, but otherwise it's serviceable for kids.

Good
- No woke. No lesbians, no politics, just a kid's movie.
- Jack Black was fine as Bowser. They tried a little too hard to make him likeable that he's less of a villain than he could be, more of a Vegeta than an Akuma. Otherwise, his voice was perfect.
- Chris Pratt was fine as Mario. Not much more to say about that one.
- Charlie Day did a fine Luigi, but that was to be expected.
- Peach is overall okay. She's belittling at the start but they lay off the taunts fairly quick.
-Kamek VA was good too.
- Overall movie is not memorable, but better than it could have been. As said earlier, it's basically a typical film by Illumination with a Mario skin, with both the good and bad that comes with it.

Bad
- Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong was a terrible choice, by far the worst VA in the whole thing. Sounds way too young for what's supposed to be an old guy.
- Seth Rogen is not completely terrible, but boring. If you like Seth you might like him as DK, but he was dull and unimaginative. To be expected since he just used his own voice with no variation.
- Peach isn't really Peach. As others said, she's Daisy. She's not really graceful and not feminine - she's basically a tomboy in the movie.
- Mario doesn't do much on his own. Besides the fight with DK and Bullet Bill, he essentially does nothing without somebody else helping him. Peach does more by herself than he does. Not great when he's meant to be the main star.

Ugly
- Whatever that negative plant star thing was. Perhaps it's a reference I don't know, but that thing was pure cringe every time it was on screen.

To be fair, if one puts that image in perspective, it’s almost reminiscent of this past happening:

Though, I’m sure it could just be based off of a coincidence.
Keep in mind, this is the site that prefers Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker over Spaceballs, the site that prefers the 2018 Tomb Raider over the 2001 Jolie movie, the site that prefers 2019 Charlie's Angels over the 2000 Barrymore/Diaz/Liu movie, and the site that gave negative reviews to Dunston Checks In, Rat Race, OG Jumanji, A Goofy Movie and Road to El Dorado

I enjoyed the movie. Good references without going overboard (they even snuck in one to the 1986 anime movie), and nothing stupid or cringe. They decided to have Toad be the kid appeal character, so he might annoy some people. Voice acting was generally better than what I was expecting. I liked Jack Black's take on Bowser, made me think of the RPG games. Peach was fine. She kicked ass without them throwing in any "I don't need no man" crap that you see so often. Climax was exactly what I wanted.

I can see why some people are critical of the overall plot. The movie is mainly a celebration of Mario Bros so there aren't any shocking twists or curveballs. I'm sure the biggest criticism of this movie will be that they played it too safe, especially if the sequels decide to ramp things up.

Looking forward to a sequel, and maybe they'll make a DK spinoff.
Honestly I’ll probably go see it this weekend with a few mates who are equally I to the games as me, everyone other than the critics are saying highly positive things so I’m going to give it a shot, the one thing I am so grateful for is that they didn’t pander to any woke type groups or try to make it anything other than a really amazing love letter to the games and the fandom itself, against all odds im extremely happy that it seems to be actually good and I’m relieved illumination actually gave a shit about this film.

Sonic 1 just beats it out for me because it takes the time to build character relationships and (ironically) slows down from time to time. If Mario did the same, it'd probably be above Sonic 1.
