Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

Honestly? I'm treating this as a rumor until Nintendo releases an official statement (or an official trailer comes out, whichever is first). After all wasn't the Legend of Zelda TV series rumor a couple years ago treated as fact? By the WSJ? And that sure has hell hasn't materialized.

They really had to go for Illumination? Were they really so cheapo that they couldn't even resort to Dreamworks?
If we're being fair here, Nintendo did partner up with Ubisoft for that Mario/Rabbids crossover. Illumination was the next logical step if they wanted to keep their French relations.

Besides, the Toads, Koopas and Goombas can all share the same model, something Illumination loves to do.

If this is true, I don't think they would've had any say in which company to go with because Illumination is Universal's current animation company, and Nintendo signed that deal to have Nintendo Land (or whatever they're calling it) put into Universal Studios Osaka.

Well how many companies did they have to choose from? Disney? lolno, like they're going to give them a chance to have more of a hold on the characters. Sony? Somehow I don't see a "Mario the Movie" for PS4 flying over very well. So it's down to Illumination or Dreamworks. And given Universal Studios has both Despicable Me rides and a Shrek ride, I'm not sure what the division is.

I dont understand why Nintendo isn’t striking a deal with Disney or Pixar instead, illumination hasn’t made a good movie once the first Despicable Me, and they created the tumblr onceler, do I need to say more? lol
Probably to maintain control over their character designs. I'm betting Disney demands the right to market any Disney/Pixar movie and all merchandise. And if they have already sold such rights in some way to somebody else that's a whole hell of a lot of legalese to wade through.

I wonder what the licensing is for Amiibos?

I'm chalking this up as another hack & rush job / failure for Illumination without question. This might... MIGHT have had a chance. Too bad it would have only worked, had it gone to Disney/Pixar (IMHO) - despite all the legalese Nintendo would have fostered on their asses. Dreamworks doesn't even factor into this for me, as it would just be the usual mediocrity we've come to expect from them, even if Nintendo wouldn't have nearly as much legalese to deal with, concerning said regime.

Even with all that in mind, I rarely ever hold out hope for movies based off video games, as it is. It just never works out, especially since more and more, video games are becoming like movies themselves, in some cases - why rely on Hollywood to help with that???

Dreamworks probably had too much lined up on its plate to spare anyone or any money to work on a Mario movie (most of it is sequels I'm not sure anyone would want to see mind you) but they have a good track record for adaptations. Plus they've definitely evolved from their Bee Movie and Shrek days.
