I thought the Rainbow Road remake (from Gamecube?) was a weak version of the track as well. I loved the remake of the 3DS one from Mario Kart 7 from a few months ago though.
Hmm... I kinda agree. My first impression was that the track seemed relatively unchanged.

But then around lap 2 I was thinking it may be intentional. The level didn't need any changes, really. And by lap 3 I was thinking that it was a nice way to end Mario Kart 8. Overall it worked well, even if it wasn't the best.

Oh yo, Bowser's Castle 3 did not disappoint outside of not changing things up in lap 3. Really liked it.

Be nice if we gotten a fully new Mario Kart 9, since 8 Deluxe was a remake and a 1/2 (obviously with alot of new tracks). But now I seriously doubt we'll see it until a Switch successor comes out.
I am hoping that, knowing that 8 is going to be a hard act to follow after adding all this content to it, they go for Mario Kart 9 to be different by making it Double Dash 2.

Great selection and I really can't complain. A couple of you had Rosalina's Ice World as long shots. How does it feel, kings?

SO HAPPY. In fact let's go over the last batch of tracks and updates.

It's time for Wave 5!!

  • Rome Avanti: The first of the last tracks is from Mario Kart Tour and it is largely a technical level, but otherwise straightforward in its complexity. Any scenery is flying by so fast at a given moment that (much like Athens Dash) the blocky structures and low resolution textures blend in and it all looks pretty decent. I liked the chain chomp coliseum. Rome Avanti ends up being a fine level but an unremarkable one. Nice spaghetti map though! Oh and when I was playing it this morning, one of my fellow Mario Kart enjoyers went and got hung up in the figure eight section of this level. The ensuing rage was top tier.
  • DK Mountain: Yeah holy bananas it's DK Mountain! What is there to say? They didn't tweak a ton and the bridge at the end is still a motherfucker. Racing down the mountain felt natural and every turn and corner worked the way I expected; the player's nostalgia and memory will work very well with this recreation. It is a great joy when we get levels that offer such sharp cornering. I really like this version of DK Mountain.
  • Daisy Circuit: Not going to lie: I sort of forgot this level existed. But when I got to that weird lighthouse thing and the statue that used to be a Mii, it all clicked. Daisy Circuit was never my favorite level but Nintendo have done a nice job with it here. I can't say a ton other than I liked it and overall the level is energetic and fun.
  • Piranha Plant Cove: This level is gorgeous and a great way to cap off a GP. Moving from underwater to above the surface and back again works really well and the different environments are very distinct and detailed. The Atlantis feel is nice with the old ruins and the moonlight. I haven't mentioned music yet but the music is great.

  • Madrid Drive: Neat level! First off I loved the icon for this track. It is very distinct. Also I REALLY liked this level. It is so much fun and there a bunch of crazy shit happening all over the place. This is from the Tour game and if all of the Tour tracks were like this, that game may have been more popular. Check out all the different textures they used for road surfaces in this one. Mario Sunshine lighting and good thwomp placement make this level a real stand out.
  • Rosalina's Ice World: No need to tell you how happy I was to see this one. It translates very well to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I do think some of the scenery looks weirdly low-res in this one but we're moving pretty fast so whatever. The ice and water look great. Overall a great inclusion; shame we never got more gems like this.
  • Bowser's Castle 3: Getting a SNES Bowser level put to rest some questions I had; namely the question of how you make a SNES Bowser level into a Mario Kart 8 track. The answer was to make the world a giant cylinder like Animal Crossing... sort of. You'll see what I mean when you play it. I agree with an earlier comment about the level being static through lap three, but I think that is very minor. This is a good racing level. If you want to prove your worth in a no bullshit race to the finish, this is the sort of level you want to pick. It's challenging but not overly. Oh and they brought out the LOUD for the music. Great level.
  • Rainbow Road: Yay another Rainbow Road... great. Really. It's a good level. A nice book end and otherwise a very competent track. I don't have a lot to say; if one thing is true right now, Mario Kart 8 has given me Rainbow Road fatigue. I think this series needs another "finale" track type besides Rainbow Road. Maybe more factory levels. But make no mistake, the Wii version of Rainbow Road is a very good track and the music was nice. I liked it!

That's all! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is over, I guess. This last DLC pack was very good. The track selection for the final two GPs was great and I haven't even gotten to some of the other odds and ends. Of course we got a bunch of new characters: Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, Pauline and Peachette. I don't think I need to explain stats; you know what works for you and what doesn't and the new characters offer well-made racers to play around with. They also added some Mii suits and eased up on a few of the requirements for existing ones.

So far I have not noticed much in the way of AI upgrades or modifications; at least nothing like in previous updates. There was a big change to item acquisition and distribution that you can read about in the patch notes below. They have added a music player to the main menu which is really neat! Good addition!! I've got to say that this is a nice send off for a very good game. I give it seven awooos out of seven.

Latest update: Ver. 3.0.0 (Released November 8th, 2023)

Support for DLC

General

  • Added “Music” button to the top menu.
    • This is a feature where you can listen to the background music that plays during the game, as you like.
    • Even players who don’t own the Booster Course Pass can listen to the background music of the DLC courses.
  • Added feature where other players who aren’t friends can join in a Room.
    • After creating a room, press the + Button or – Button to display the Room ID on the Room screen, and tell your fellow racers the Room ID.
    • The other racers can join by entering the Room ID in “Search by Room ID.”
  • Made it so that you can create a Room even if you have 0 friends registered.
  • Added staff credits for the Booster Couse Pass.
    • Conditions for seeing the credits:
      • If you have the Booster Course Pass: Clear all DLC cups in Grand Prix mode ranked third or higher (for the second time and later, clear Moon Cup or Spiny Cup ranked third or higher).

  • Shortened the time between when an Item Box is acquired by someone until it is restored.
  • Lowered the appearance rate of Mirror and 200cc in “Worldwide” and “Regional.”
  • Made it so you can acquire the “Varia Suit” when using a Metroid series amiibo.
  • Made it so you can acquire the “Hylian Suit” when using a Legend of Zelda series amiibo.
  • Made it so you can acquire the “Kirby Suit” when using a Kirby series amiibo.
  • Made it so you can acquire the “Daisy Suit” when using a Daisy amiibo.

Fixed Issues

  • Fixed an issue where no Bob-omb car blows up in Wii Moonview Highway, but a Bob-omb car blows up for someone you are playing with online.
  • Fixed an issue where, when racing against a Ghost in Time Trials on Yoshi's Island, the red road would not appear even though the Ghost touched the Winged Cloud.
Finally, the Booster Course Pack in genreal: I thought it was cool and it is exactly what I wanted. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is my favorite one so far and I've played them all at release. I know it isn't everyone's favorite and I know we wish other games got this sort of treatment, but this package is pretty awesome. Tons of great tracks and you can play for hours and hours and never once play a duplicate race. There are lots of people online at any given time and the community is very competitive. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the Booster Course Pack is a goddamn killer.

Ten awooos out of ten!!

Still here? Oh okay... uh... ... okay got something:

What more would I like to see? Well, besides a couple more levels... truthfully I think Mario Kart needs to add some sort of "level transition" mechanic like Super Smash Bros. has. What do I mean? I mean when I get to the end of every second or third lap, I drive through the finish line and into a giant white tunnel and come out the other side on the first lap of a different track. I collect my points and we keep on going; you could even make the transition zones their own special area with special rules and conditions. We need a marathon mode or an endurance mode where you have to race for long stretches of time. Or add a Mario Kart 99 mode; I feel like it could be done. These are some of the directions I'd like to see the series take. And if they want to do a test run on some late-stage MK8 patches, fucking go for it! Oh and Mario Kart Maker but I'm not as optimistic about that.

I am noticing defensive items appearing in first place a little more often, sort of like how it used to be. Got triple green in first as well, which hasn't happened in forever.

Also I went and checked and they didn't add an option to run all 96 tracks, still just 48. I consider that a bit of an oversight and I hope they fix it. There is still a chance of more content.

I haven't got to play much yet, but I really like Rome Avanti, Piranha Plant Cove, and Bowser's Castle 3. Wii Rainbow Road and DK Mountain are great trips to the past for me in particular, too. Bowser's Castle reminds me of Cortex Castle from CTR

A lot of items are appearing more often than they should be... red/blue shells being the biggest ones. Even on 50CC I'm getting my ass handed to me by the CPU even though I'm way the hell in front of them. The good thing is that they seem to have increased the recovery time from damage so you're not getting raped over and over again, but it's pretty frustrating when you're in 1st and then you get hit by a red shell, followed by a blue shell, followed by the lightning bolt, and it's the final lap, and the CPU eventually catches up to you and practically steals 1st place. That's not even mentioning online battles, which is chaos x100.

So far I've managed to 3-star every course on 50cc 100cc and 150cc and am now going through MirrorCC

4am to 5am EST is one of the coziest times to play International Kart. Nice mix of Japs, some Euros (even the French!) and a couple of Americans and an assortment of others.

Good skill, too. Most really fit their score.

I should do one of these.

A few months out and the DLC has been really enjoyable. Glad they did it.

You know what I'd like in the next game? The return of unlockable karts. I don't mean removing the ability to win individual parts, but it was always more satisfying to unlock a full kart rather than just getting a set of wheels for getting so many coins. If you want to keep the coins = new parts thing then turn it into a gacha system, like Smash Bros Melee or Kirby and and the Forgotten Land. That's one way to keep people coming back, even if it's not the best thing in terms of design.

tl;dr, DD!!'s Parade Float is the best.

My complaint will be longer than my actual post. To find this video on Nintendo's main YouTube page, I typed the word "nintendo" into the search bar. Why in the world did I have to scroll down past ten not-Nintnedo things before I found a link to Nintendo's channel crammed between two giant videos as if YouTube are intentionally trying to make it hard for me to find. What the hell is the logic behind a search feature that doesn't search for the most-similar result based upon your search terms? If you type "nintendo", Nintendo's channel should be the first result or else your search engine is fucking broken.

I know it is old news now but they showed off a little bit of a new Mario Kart. It looks dusty and fun. Maybe we will finally get longer tracks.

Mario Kart World looks good, but not $90 good. At least when Mario Kart came out on the Wii, it came with a plastic Wii wheel shell. I think it was $50 WITH the wheel.
