TLTOC is pretty great and King Dafoe looks so handsome in it. Plus it got the religious people clutching their pearls.

I didn't care for The Departed because I found Infernal Affairs better.

I do love his wife Thelma's film restorations of The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, etc for Criterion. It is so much better than Disney any day.

I’ve said this before, but “Mean Streets” is probably the best example of how to make a great film that represents Italian culture right. There’s a huge difference between representation to tell a legitimate story regarding culture and representation for the sake of trying to tick boxes for diversity points.

Good on him for rightfully shitting on capeshit.
I don't think he's ever insulted the MCU, he said he understood why people enjoyed them but the MCU's success has made it harder for studios to let directors like him make more artistic films instead of easy popcorn flicks. Though considering how mixed the reception was to The Irishman, maybe modern audiences aren't into him like older audiences were.

How did I miss this thread? One of the greatest living filmmakers even if he's a little on the hit and miss side once you get to the mid-80's period or the Leonardo Dicaprio movies -aside from Wolf of Wall Street which is brilliant.

I really like the two Godfather films. One thing I thought of and I don't know if others took it the same as me is that the protagonist takes the line "Keep your friends close and enemies closer" to the logical conclusion and by the film's end he doesn't have any friends left, only potential enemies.

I have to agree with our lovely resident cinema snob expert @BrunoMattei that "Casino" is his best film (too many reasons to write out in detail here), but I want to give a shoutout to "The Last Temptation of Christ". It is a fever dream of a movie I keep coming back to year after year. Wikipedia calling it an "expressionist film" really hits the nail on the head (or nail through the palm har har). The downright bizarre soundtrack by Peter Gabriel adds to the whole thing.

I remember in college posting this video to friends after final exams (STEM field, so low-key dying was an all-too-common feeling after those final exam struggle sessions). As I've gotten older I'm finding more and more in this art piece than just a funny relatable college final post (linked at the specific time, but just in case it didn't, it starts at 5:23):
