I don't know if this applies because I don't know who the author is, and the character seems to be featured in several stories. I'm talking about "Jane the Killer", from the Creepypasta fandoms. Yeah...

If I'm not mistaken, at first the character was supposed to be some kind of antagonist to Jeff the Killer (the originallity!), but since some fangirls started to make their own Jane the Killer fan art and fanfics, they made her that kind of edgy/dark character with forced love interests and such. I've seen people complaining about Jane in some Creepypasta communities; this causes fangirls to TRIGGER and start defending Jane by saying "she's not a Mary Sue!!!", and the cycle continues.

As someone else in this thread said, it all depends on how you do it. Just like how a Sue themselves can be salvageable, crossing over fandoms/having a cross-fandom character can also be possible. The problem is that you either have gigantic-ass crossovers (like the Pooh's Adventure shit) that become a clusterfuck with no room for development just because there's so much going on, or your characters end up being so obnoxiously bland for the sake of fitting in to the multiple fandoms. The third issue is crossovers that make absolutely no fucking sense or are really horribly forced, but those are much fewer and far between I've found, thankfully.

(An example of the third kind - I once saw a 'crossover' fic that was for the Christmas horror movie P2 and Game of Thrones; which was purely an excuse to do the plot of the movie; about a security guard stalking a woman through a parking garage; with Theon Greyjoy and Ramsay Bolton in the main character roles instead of Angela Nichols and Wes Bentley. Literally, that was the only thing that was changed. It made no fucking sense and it was apparently just for the author's ship fetish. Another example: That Fallout/MLP crossover.)

Generally speaking, if you're going to make a cross-fandom character, you have to make them flexible but not bland. Similar but different. What are their basic traits, and how can you process them differently to fit into the new setting without losing the core of who they are? A character with substance abuse issues might be addicted to alcohol in a mundane/modern setting, but let's say you put them in a space opera where there's no canon alcohol equivalent so you give them an addiction to, I don't know, space meth instead. A character's father might die in one story to give them loss/grief development but might merely be absentee in another.

For crossing over fandoms themselves, you should really have fandoms that would at least fit together logically. Take Grimm and Supernatural. Both are relatively dark shows with supernatural monsters and monster hunters (and family issues). You might need to fudge some canon a little to make it work but it might not be in a way that would cause much issues except from the most purist of spergs. Prefer your crossovers more modern? Try Leverage and Person of Interest; which both follow vigilante teams using high-tech hacking to try and help people - Leverage with corporate corruption, PoI with murders and national security.

Trying to crossover something like, say, Mad Max and How To Train Your Dragon and The Epic of Gilgamesh? Now you're getting into full-on Pooh's Adventure impossible clusterfuck shit. There's a case of wildly clashing storylines and content that probably wouldn't work. The only time this has EVER probably worked in anyone's favor has probably been with Kingdom Hearts; which is just basically Disney crossed with Final Fantasy. Though one could argue that's pretty autistic a series in and of itself, but. Still.

TL;DR: It's hard, harder than writing a non-Mary Sue character, in fact, but not impossible. The most basic way to make it work, is just stop overcomplicating things.

Chakats are infamous in other Sci-Fi related communities, constantly trying to get a foothold in them. They got their start in Star Trek, though they now reside primarily in Chakona Space, which I can essentially explain as Star Trek with enough changed to make it considered its own setting. Even in their own fucking setting, Chakats are so flagrantly Sue-ish that it's extremely hard to put into mere words.

Those might be interesting if portrayed correctly. Perhaps as some dictator race that has either brainwashed or otherwise subverted all alien races into loving them through fear. On the surface they look perfect, but underneath being pure evil.

Of course, it'd take actual talent to write a story with them like that. And we all know Sue writers don't have talent.
 
This thread has gotten me all nostalgic now~

I don't like how over the years the term Mary Sue has been used in non fan fiction/instant message role plays; especially when people use the term to describe characters that they don't like. What used to be a rather simple, straight forward term has become ambiguous and used often by people who aren't familiar with fan fiction in general.

Then there's the Mary Sue Litmis tests which are spergy as fuck.

I've been a part of the Hetalia (grumblegrumble) fanbase for a looooong while. Probably since that cancerous anime took off, actually. I came for the hawt yaoiz and stayed for that tiny portion of the fandom that genuinely loves History and finds interesting ways to squeeze the characters in, ripping the yaoi bullshit away from them and whatnot.
Anyway, I've roleplayed as France for as long as I could remember and I'm pretty proud of my interpretation of him, if I do say so myself-- Anyway. I started RPing on Tumblr (yikes) as an independant blog for France and it was going along well, I got pointed to the right people right away and I had fun! It was great! Most people I RP'd with were decent and great and then this fucking Paris OC comes along and makes me cringe.

For those who don't know, Hetalia is an anime in which every character is the physical representation of a country. Each character's design and personalities are based on stereotyped from said countries (Germany's the stoic blue-eyed-blond muscle man, Russia's a creepy alcoholic, America's an obnoxious fucktard, and France is a hypersexual narcissistic shithead. You get the pattern.) These characters are somewhat immortal, they live as long as the country exists and die when they are no longer relevant... Oh, important thing: They're countries. Not States, not fake countries, and certainly not a city.

So Paris, here, already goes against canon... But it would have been tolerable if the character wasn't a pink-haired angel fallen from Heaven that France-san took under his wing and adopted and who eventually marries England because England is so hot desu and ughgjhgj
Lemme just list everything that was wrong.

  • She represents the city of Paris, France. (character is a city rather than a country)
  • Her name was Crendessa Hazelrink. (character has a fancy name, also a name which doesn't suit her situation)
  • She was a fucking angel. With wings and shit. Literally an 'Angel of Light'. (character is of a species which doesn't suit their position or just plainly doesn't fit with the narrative, she should be a 'country' or w/e)
  • Pink hair. 'Voluptuous'. Always described as beautiful, graceful and perfect. (typical mary-sue beauty standards I mean what)
  • She was described to have so many powers and abilities, magical and otherwise. (characters in the Hetalia-verse are immortal and have Deadpool-style regeneration powers but that's it)
  • She was shipped with a canon character. (something I usually tolerate if thought out well, makes sense and doesn't fuck up canon events, this was literally just uguu England-senpai daisuki)
I could go on. The cherry on top was that the RPer couldn't draw for shit. All her character's art was found via a google search of 'pink-haired anime angel' or made with a Gaia Online generator. Examples below:

She didn't bother me much, if I may be honest. But the fact that I was a France RPer and that she definitely needed her adopted Papa uwu led her to pester me.
The whole concept of her character is just godawful, she's a Sue, she's annoying, she's the furthest from canon, she's ship-bait, and idk she made light of the terrorist attacks that took place in Paris in 2015 (not in the 'lmao Moose Limbs are retarded' kind of way, the 'let's use this event to RP fluff and angst and smut!!!' kind of way, which needless to say rubs me the wrong way)
Let's not even get started on her dont like dont read mentality. Also she claims her character isn't a Mary-Sue because she had flaws... Flaws being 'she's shy and clumsy and has low self-esteem'.

I sound like I'm angry but eh, I'm numbed to this brat's autismo. Buddies and I did a few dramatic readings of her About page. That was fun.
She left her Paris blog due to shit that went down that I wasn't a part of nor aware of until I was pointed to her new blog... Which is the exact same copy-pasted Bio, just a few tweaks here and there to suit the Fire Emblem universe (your problem now, friendos)

I found about this fanfiction called "My Inner Life", it's a rather old and infamous fanfic, it's been called "The zelda version of My Immortal" but it's 100% legit without any hint of irony here (imo my immortal was a troll fic).

Well, it's about Jenna, a random merchant girl that meets Link Silverblade (yeah, she gave him that surname just because she liked) and falls in love with him. And then he falls in love back. And they fuck. And they marry. And they fuck again. And they drink each other's pee in a bonding ritual. Then they fuck again. The entire "story" is just like this but lets talk about Jenna first and why she is probably the funniest/weirdest mary sue i've ever seen. A few examples:

a- Link just met her and is immediatly in love, then he marries her and fucks her in the next few chapters. The fanfiction constantly gushes on how they're perfect for each other and have so much in common but it's shown because all they do is fuck each other.

b-All the other characters are all OOC and only exist to praise her. Saria (wtf is she doing there if this is adult OoT link???) tells her she is the coolest girl ever, the fairies, the king, etc everyone loves her. Even Ruto appears just to say Jenna deserves Link more than she.

c-Zelda is humiliated so hard it's amazing. From Zelda giving Jenna her diamong bracelet, that Jenna refuses (oh she is so selfless!) but Zelda insists. The King suddendly calling Jenna HIS DAUGHTER while calling Zelda just "the princess". Zelda described as "almost as powerful as Rauru" (forget how she helped defeat ganondorf) while Jenna is a badass alemental master. Zelda being demoted to taking care of her children. But the best is when she says "Oh Link, you truly have the perfect wife!"

d-Jenna is somehow just a normal girl and the most speshul magic princess that ever lived at the same time. The Deku Tree (wasn't he dead?) gives her her own fairy (BUT SHE IS NOT A KOKIRI!). The king accepts Jenna as his daughter. Jenna discover she has motherfucking control over the elements because of her secret genetic left by her dead parents, etc

e-Her son is also a barely born and is also a mary sue even. He gets a gift from every sage (sleeping beauty style), the moment he is born he is gigling at her jokes and a few months later doing basic math. His name is also Link Jr. She also has 2 kids,

But why are those funny? Because despite her ridiculous sueness... Jenna is just a baby machine for 99% of the story. All she cares about is cooking for Link (but they always fuck instead of eating) and have his kids but even there she is an awful wife and awful mother. In a very sexist moment she assumes Link doesn't know how to cook since he is a man, and asks another female character to cook for them. A short time later, Jenna would be called awesome for how much of a FEMINIST she is. Even when she is pregnant she is still drinking alcohol, fighting and fucking because (i kid you not) "having sex while pregnant makes the unborn child stronger". :heart-empty:

It's the kind of thing that has to be seen to be believed. If anyone wants i also found a dramatic reading on youtube. Even if she wasn't a mary sue, the godawful writing, story error / inconcistences, and the "I ROARED LIKE A TIGER!" sex are interesting enough.

Since you mentioned it... Dr. John Watson, Professor Arronax, Captain Nemo (as well add almost all of Verne's scientists and sea captains,) the Mad Hatter, and Elizabeth Bennett are all author self-insert Mary Sues- as are most of the Heian-era romantic heroines (most notably, Murasaki from Genji.) I beg to differ from the majority opinion, in thinking that Mary Sues are not *inherently* unlikable- it depends on the author's personality, and how they're written.

The worst Mary Sue character I ever read in an actual published work of fiction was probably Anita Blake from the Laurell K Hamilton books. Even at the tender age of 15, you just knew that Anita Blake was really just the author's self-insert because what pudgy middle-aged white bitch doesn't want to bone both a vampire with the physique of Zyzz and a werewolf who I imagined looks something like Gaston from "Beauty and the Beast", but with a beard.

I mean seriously, half of those books is just long, drawn out sex scenes. Titillating for a 15 year old boy, sure, but even at that raging hormone age, you could tell this wasn't that different from your average fanfic on DeviantART, just in book form.
