No article yet as this just happened, but could be big. One of the largest bridges in the world according to Wikipedia.

Are bridges supposed to just annihilate themselves when a support is clipped? Wouldn't they be designs for only a segment to fall off?
The bridge was built in 1977. Even if it were the sturdiest bridge in the history of modern construction when it was erected, the combination of aging infrastructure combined with a ship that massive, there would have been no chance of avoiding catastrophic damage.

There was at least one tractor trailer on the bridge that went in.

I hate that the BBC is the source with the best updates on this story, everyone else is literally copying their homework and screenshots.
Like, I get that everyone was asleep when this went down, but you'd think every newsroom on the eastern seaboard would be waking up their desk jockeys to get into the studio nowish.
They are. Still does not stop the BBC from having the most news on it when they start.

Looking at that track, they were on a straight course that would've cleared the bridge. Making that turn put them straight into that support. Yeah, big time fuck up on the captain's part.
The ship should/would have been under the control of a harbour pilot, not the captain at that point.

You can see the cars going into the water on this video.

It's definitely the Baltimore key bridge. I recognize it in the vid below.

"The vessel that caused the collapse could be the Singaporean-flagged container ship Dali, Sky News reported, citing data from MarineTraffic website."

Water causes tremendous pressure differentials making it impossible to open car doors.
If these people have a tool to shatter the windows and can swim, they may survive, if not, they have to wait for the car to flood, then attempt to get out before it sinks too low.
If you have to cross bridges regularly, keep a center-punch in easy grabbing distance so you can shatter your windows to escape in a situation like this.

If the people in the cars managed to get out, they had better be good cold water swimmers. According to Google, the water temp is 9C.
