The recent influx of illegal refugees flooding across the border into Quebec is proving to be an immigration wakeup call for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau appeared to backtrack Fridayon his passive stance on illegal immigration, cautioning the so-called “asylum-seekers” that they should respect the border between Canada and the U.S.

So many Haitians have crossed illegally in the last month that the city opened the rarely used Olympic Stadium as a “welcome center.”

In January, following President Donald Trump’s first executive order to restrict entry to the U.S. from some Middle East countries, Trudeau tweeted out a message, “to those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canada will welcome you regardless of your faith.'”

Soon after, a flood of illegal refugees began appearing at remote crossings from Quebec to British Columbia.

Then, in February, Mayor Denis Coderre emphatically declared Montreal a sanctuary city.

Despite Coderre’s enthusiasm, Trudeau appears to have changed his tune.

“We want migration to Canada to be done in an orderly fashion; there’s border checkpoints and border controls that we need to make sure are respected,” the Prime minister said, wearing a “Sinclair” kilt from his mother’s side of the family as he talked to reporters during a photo op at the Glengarry Highland Games in Ontario.

“The people coming now irregularly will still have to go through all the proper processes.”

Trudeau said Canadian Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen would be checking into the border crossing at Lacolle, Quebec — along the New York border — to see if the immigration authorities needed any more assistance.

“We are ensuring that the capacity to deal with these refugees is in place and our immigration system remains strong and robust.”

Many of the Haitians entering Canada illegally from the U.S. are saying that they fear deportation due now the White House is considering changing the temporary protected refugee status of Haitians who came to America following the 2010 earthquake.

According to a CBC News report, many of these illegals are coming to Canada as a result of a “fake news” story featured on WhatsApp that encouraged all Haitian refugees who feared deportation to come North.

As a french quebecer, there is a rise of angry mob. Trudeau and Coderre might have thought that our long resentment for other religion might be gone, but it got actually worst now. It's so bad, that they want to open '' Radical Prevention Center '' to Quebec because it's must be in our blood to be Right Wing extremist.

http://www.lapresse.ca/le-soleil/ac...-prevention-de-la-radicalisation-a-quebec.php
(Québec) With the increased visibility of extreme right groups this week in Quebec City, the Director of the Center for the Prevention of Radicalization (CPRMV) now considers it "urgent" to formally establish an office in the capital, 'Thought Mayor Régis Labeaume.

"We have calls coming in." People are asking for support. Certainly in the coming weeks, we will post jobs, "says the organization's general manager, Herman Deparice-Okomba.

The Center opened its doors in Montreal almost two years ago thanks to funding from the City of Montreal and the Department of Public Safety, each of which invested $ 1 million. This spring, Mr. Deparice-Okomba had already expressed his intention to open an antenna in Quebec City, noting in particular the increase in calls following the January bombing at the Great Mosque in Quebec City. But Mayor Régis Labeaume immediately closed the door to this idea, declaring that the city "does not need this".

But Mr Deparice-Okomba replied that he had not received a plea of inadmissibility. In any case, he says, the CPRMV does not need the approval of the municipality. "I have the independent capacity to set up offices where I feel it is necessary. And in the case of Quebec City, it is an emergency, "he repeats.

Already, two employees of the Center work full-time in the capital while several others are commuting between the two cities. "But it costs us dearly to move people and accommodate them," says the CEO. It is necessary to formalize a place, "continues the one who considers also necessary to have staff knowing the environment since the interventions are of psychosocial and training.

Anti-immigration groups

Herman Deparice-Okomba believes that the increased visibility of groups appearing openly in the capital as anti-immigration by placing banners across the city as a large wave of asylum seekers has entered Quebec for two Weeks confirms "we have a problem with the far right".

There is no doubt in his mind that we must intervene. That said, the director of the CPRMV does not want to alert the population. "I do not mean it goes wrong, just that we have needs," he says.

There's protester everywhere. My facebook feeds is filled with this. I saw liberal turning to Conservative or to the Parti Quebecois. I hear people insulting muslim at work, at the bus, sometimes to their face.

http://quebec.huffingtonpost.ca/201...lacharnement-des-conservateurs_n_8147434.html

Warda Naili, a Quebecker who wears the niqab, thinks that the Conservative Party of Canada is "working hard" on a group of women who are already "very marginalized" to make political capital.

"With all the problems we have right now, I think we have more urgent cases than legislating on a group of 200 to 400 women," she says.

The young woman sees no problem in lifting the veil that covers a part of her face to identify with the security guards. But women should be able to keep their niqab while they take their oath of citizenship before other new citizens, in his view.

Warda Naili is a "native of Quebec" who converted to Islam a few years ago. She changed her name and made the choice to veil part of her face in 2011.

Since then, she has made her voice heard in the media and on social networks. She was very active during the debate on the Charter of Quebec values under the Marois government.

Warda Naili is accustomed to being insulted on the street and being told to "return to her country". A man even tried to swing a bottle of beer on his head while she was on an escalator of the Montreal subway.

The debates surrounding the niqab only reinforce prejudices against Muslims, she deplores.

"The people here are" bocked ". They have a hard head. There are people who will misinterpret [the law] and believe that [face uncovered] applies in the street. "

"Not everyone is following the new policies assiduously and they do not understand what that means. Misunderstanding nourishes prejudices. Already that it was not obvious [to wear the niqab], it became much worse. "

Immigration Minister Chris Alexander confirmed on Wednesday that the government would challenge the judgment of the Federal Court of Appeal rendered the day before, which ruled Zunera Ishaq, a Muslim woman who had refused to reveal her face during a ceremony Of citizenship in 2013.

Quebec Lieutenant Denis Lebel subsequently announced in Trois-Rivières that a re-elected Conservative government "will reintroduce and pass the oath of citizenship act in the first 100 days of its legislature."

Justin Trudeau said that Canada must protect the rights of minorities and that the government has preferred to focus on fear and division. Thomas Mulcair had also spoken for the wearing of the niqab during the ceremonies of citizenship.

Ishaq, a Pakistani who moved to Ontario, filed a request for a review of the policy in January 2014. She will be able to vote in elections this fall for the first time thanks to the ruling in her favor.

Quebeckers against the niqab

The leader of the Bloc Québécois, Gilles Duceppe, agrees with Stephen Harper on the wearing of the niqab during the oath of citizenship. He recalled that the vast majority of Quebeckers were against the idea of receiving or offering public services with a covered face.

Catherine Fournier, a Bloc Québécois candidate in Montarville, even spoke of the niqab as a "symbol of woman's submission" and denounced the lack of political courage of the other federal parties.

Warda Naili believes that this position, which resonates with that of the Parti Québécois, is even worse than that of the Conservatives.

"I have no problem identifying myself, but from there to taking it off to receive a service, it becomes discriminatory," she says.

"It gets very humiliating to me. It is a violation of my privacy. "

She deplores that the integral veil represents for some "the image of extremism" Muslim. Same for prayer five times a day and the month of Ramadan fasting.

If she acknowledges that the port of the niqab has isolated her in her own province, Warda Naili argues that she is not alone in her situation. Her circle of friends is made up of Quebeckers who, like her, have chosen to cover their faces.

She is concerned not only about the re-election of the Conservative Party but also about the 2018 elections that could bring Pierre Karl Péladeau's Parti Québécois to power and thus lead to another Charter of values.

Well done Trudeau. When you shit your refugees in one of the most nationnalist province, you should have excepted all of this. And that's why he back tracks. There's a lot of french canadian that will vote blue and I'm not talking about the Quebec's election.

Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes voting in the NDP in 2011 was what kicked the Liberals to third party status. The west usually votes Conservative, so the Liberals know the majority of their power lies in the eastern provinces, and that is why this is a major issue to them.

I was afraid there wouldn't be any chance of him losing next election.

I'm glad that there's a shitstorm a-brewing.

Scheer's only chance of winning is on how bad Trudeau fucks up.

I don't like the Conservatives, but I can't stand Trudeau, just like I couldn't stand his father (Whether Pierre or Castro is his father; they were both motherfuckers). And I've always hated the Liberal party.

I thought he had some sense regarding when he took refugees in earlier, but I guess it was simply geography at play (Even the loosest Canadian refugee policy has more vetting than Germany's, simply because we have an ocean between us and them), because as soon as he had a chance to open the borders enmasse, he took it. Now he's probably going to lose a good chunk of Quebec if this doesn't get handled, which I doubt it will.

Seeing the Liberals come in third place was the best day of my life, but I knew even then they would eventually realize that people would vote in a new Trudeau without even thinking about it.

Then Jack Layton died and I knew the NDP would be fucked.

Trudeau was largely a protest vote. People were fed up with Harper but at the same time were wary of Mulclair's NDP as well. That left the spoiled celebrity drama teacher as the only other choice.

Canada struggles with refugee surge from US
AFP • Julien BESSET • 18 hours ago
Montreal (AFP) - Soldiers busily assemble tents with wooden floors, lighting and heating in Canada's Quebec province near the US border to temporarily house a surge in asylum seekers from the United States.

Children run between rows and rows of the military green tents as their parents line up to speak with immigration officials and file refugee claims.

Throughout the day, school buses drop off dozens of people at a time at the makeshift tent city in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec. They walked across the border with suitcases in hand, before being picked up by federal police who deliver them here.

Eventually, the newcomers will be transferred to Montreal or a government facility in Ontario province where officials will help them find more suitable accommodations while their claims are considered.

Security prevented media from speaking to any of the tent city residents.

Most of the new arrivals are Haitians who face expulsion from the United States at the end of the year. Then, temporary asylum granted to 60,000 Haitians affected by a devastating 2010 earthquake is due to expire.

Their numbers have soared from about 400 in May to 3,800 in the first weeks of August.

Under a Canada-US agreement, asylum seekers travelling through the United States would be turned away at Canadian border checkpoints, and told to file a refugee claim in the United States.

But that rule does not apply to people who reach Canadian soil unchecked, through backwoods.

- Irregular border crossings surge -

The Canada-US border is the longest between any countries in the world. There are no fences along the vast stretches of dense forests and mountainous terrain, and security is relatively low.

Those who bypass border checkpoints to enter are detained by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but they are assured an opportunity to file a refugee claim in Canada.

The military was sent in to help set up a camp near the border at the beginning of August, then a second and a third, to accomodate newcomers who have made the journey.

Border, police and immigration staffing have also been increased to handle the influx.

In the meantime, the federal government has been feverishly working to dispel misinformation being spread in the United States and overseas about how to flout Canada's immigration laws.

"There's information being disseminated on foreign websites and social media that say how to illegally immigrate to Canada," RCMP spokeswoman Camille Habel told AFP.

On Thursday, Transportation Minister Marc Garneau warned that getting into Canada "is not an automatic ticket to being accepted here as a refugee."

"Those who might wish to seek asylum (must) fully understand the rules under which we operate, which is that unless you are being persecuted or fleeing terror or war, you would not qualify as a refugee," he said.

In fact, only half of the wave of Haitian nationals who tried last year were accepted as refugees. The remainder were ordered out of the country, according to officials.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has often touted Canada's immigration and refugee system, saying at the start of the year: "To all those fleeing persecution, terror and war, Canadians will welcome you."

But as officials struggle to keep pace with the burgeoning number of arrivals, opposition politicians and anti-immigration groups have fueled a backlash with calls to close the border to walk-in asylum seekers.

"In their place, I would do the same if I heard that Canada is a land of welcome. It remains to be seen if we can afford to welcome them," commented Ghislain, a Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle restaurateur.

In this border town about 60 kilometers (38 miles) south of Montreal, he said feelings about the newcomers are mixed.

"Some are for, others are against. Me, I am in between, as long as we don't have clear information on the number of migrants who will stay and how much it will cost us," Ghislain said.

"For the moment, we don't know much."

Quebec City chimpouts in progress

La Meute was going to hold an anti-Islam protest today. A bunch of hooded goons came around and the police ended up forcing La Meute into a parking garage because Antifa started assaulting people again.

It looks like all of the Canadian press outlets covering this refer to La Meute as far-right but won't call the Antifa throwing (sometimes literal) shit far-left. Some aren't even calling them Antifa. Just "counter protesters."

Everyone on my Facebook is chimping out about this right now

All of the violence seems to be coming from the "counter protesters." No way in hell Mr. Congeniality says anything to support La Meute so he might have to go with his own "both sides" comment.

Trudeau's not gonna have an easy out on this one, as nearly every article on this subject specifically singles out the counter-protesters as the cause of all the violence. No matter what he says, either side will be angry, if he says nothing, everyone will notice his hesitation and he'll be called out on it.

2017 is his worst year, and it won't be getting any better for him.

CTV Montreal’s Rob Lurie reports that far-right demonstrators were unable to go ahead with a planned protest against illegal immigration at 2 p.m., after hundreds of far-left anti-fascist demonstrators showed up to counter them.

Lurie reports that the anti-fascist group set off fireworks, lit a garbage can and a flag on fire, threw bottles at police and threw chairs. He said the far-right demonstrators, who had a permit for their rally, responded by heading into a government building.

Quebec City police declared the demonstration illegal around 2 p.m. Police said on Twitter around 4 p.m. that at least one person had been arrested.

The protest against illegal immigration was organized by La Meute, a far-right group considered by many to be anti-Islam and racist. La Meute says it does not discriminate based on race, but is opposed to illegal border crossings. The RCMP intercepted 3,800 asylum seekers crossing the border between the U.S. and Quebec between Aug. 1 and 15, after nearly 3,000 in July.

Hours before the planned demonstrations, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the planned rally, saying that a small “angry, frustrated group of racists don't get to define who we are as a country, don't get to tell others who we are and don't get to change the nature of the open, accepting values that make us who we are.”

"I am proud to be Canadian, I am proud to be a Quebecer and I am proud to stand with millions of Canadians who reject the hateful, harmful, heinous ideologies that we've seen in dark corners of both the Internet and our communities from time to time,’ Trudeau said in Montreal.

I guess you could say...it's no longer the current year.

Canada's Trudeau warns against entering country 'irregularly'

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who once took to Twitter to welcome Syrian refugees into the country, said on Sunday that there would be "no advantage" to entering "irregularly."

"Canada is an opening and welcoming society," he told reporters in Montreal following talks with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. "But let me be clear. We are also a country of laws. Entering Canada irregularly is not an advantage. There are rigorous immigration and customs rules that will be followed. Make no mistake."

Earlier this week, government statistics showed the number of migrants illegally crossing the border into Canada from the United States more than tripled in July.

More than 3,100 people walked across the border illegally in July to file refugee claims and were arrested, up from 884 in June, the federal government said.

Almost all went to the French-speaking province of Quebec, where the influx of primarily Haitian asylum-seekers leaving in fear of U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown is sparking a broader backlash from opposition politicians and anti-immigrant groups.

A far-right group and pro-refugee protesters are holding demonstrations in Quebec City on Sunday over the influx of asylum seekers.

In late January, Trudeau welcomed those fleeing war and persecution a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would put a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the United States and temporarily barred travelers from seven countries.

"To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith," Trudeau said on Twitter. "Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada."

Why do they always say diversity is our strength when their ill-conceived ideas of everyone singing "Its a Small World" falls flat and ironically makes the native population even more racist and hostile to immigrant groups?
