For some reason I thought Canada already had somewhat heavy gun control laws. Probably because their laws on self-defense are really fucked.

They do have heavy laws.

The AR-15 Trudeau banned is (or was) the Canada-legal version, which is semi auto (single fire) and only holds 3 rounds. It was considered restricted, only legal reason to have one was for the gun range, similar to other restricted guns like pistols.

To do that, you needed to take a gun course, get a restricted firearm license, get a transport permit to buy and take the gun home, then get another transport permit to take it to and only to the gun range (these permits have the 2 destinations on them), if you stop at McDonalds on the way, that's a gun crime.

Also if your firearm license ever expires, you get charge stacked for unlawful gun possession for every gun registered to you.

Also afaik at no point during all of that are you allowed to defend yourself with those guns.

So yea, it was strict, but Trudeau needed to make the New Zealand shooting about him.

Something interesting that I found looking around the area on Maps: there's a Labour Unlimited pretty much in the center of it. They're a temp labor outfit with locations throughout the lower mainland and most of their workers are barely-functional addicts, headcases and general fucking weirdos. They would definitely be open from 5:30 AM onwards.

Explains the hour, the appearance of the shooter and the perforated junkies pretty well, I'd say. Might be our guy got ripped off for drugs recently and decided to go on tilt. Or maybe he got sick of stepping over them while he went to work for his $90/day. Or maybe they weren't homeless people at all but other workers (it can be hard to differentiate between homeless and an LU worker because they're often on in the same).

I'm fairly confident that whatever happened, the LU had something to do with it and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that everyone involved worked there. I've half a mind to call them and ask.
This is very on point for the area. When I read the description I immediately thought of a guy I used to know who worked for a rich contractor in BC. He constantly hired temp guys to do some of the worst jobs - digging 6ft ditches with shovels or carrying bricks due to the location being unable to use some of the big machines for the job. He would complain that everyone he hired were junkies that would do a day or two of work and fuck off. Another guy I knew would pick fruit for something like $10 a barrel and lived on the farm in a house with twenty others.

That's about the long and short of it although a day or two is pretty optimistic - a lot of them try to wriggle out around noon, take their four-hour minimum cheque and go get high.

They're really a wretched lot of people but at least they work from time to time, I guess. Most times they're just fucking the dog, complaining about having to do the job, complaining about the office expecting them to show up on time, etc.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Why would he do this?

3 confirmed dead including gunman, 2 more wounded. They are all indicated as transients/homeless in the articles.

Two victims are dead and two others are seriously hurt after a series of shootings at several different locations in Langley, B.C., prompted emergency alerts early Monday.
A suspect was later identified and shot dead by police.
One man was found dead by the Langley city bus loop at Logan Avenue and Glover Road. Another man was discovered dead at the nearby Creek Stone Place supportive housing project.
Police also found a woman who'd been shot near 203A Street and the Fraser Highway. She was taken to hospital in critical condition.
A man matching the description was later found near Willowbrook Mall, at 200 Street and the Langley Bypass. A fourth victim, a man who'd been shot in the leg but survived, was also located there.
The statement said police shot the suspect and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"At this time we don't know the motive behind this deadly incident, nor if there was any relationship between the deceased suspect and the victims," Chief Supt. Ghalib Bhayani, assistant district commander with the Lower Mainland RCMP.

Would it be insane to think that Canada’s news stations will drop this story altogether mainly because they don’t view homeless people as people?
Lol. You have no idea how much we coddle our homeless. They get more sympathy for being degenerate addicts than the middle class does for high gas prices. If anything this will get more play because the victims were homeless.

But wasn't the shooter homeless as well?
We still don't know his race, do we?

RCMP in this region are tight-lipped about violent crimes. It'll take a week or two for all of the details to fall into place, especially since there doesn't seem to be much certainty that this was a solo mission. It doesn't seem that the shooter was also a transient, at least not according to releases.

Reports said he was white and Carharrt is pretty fancy for a homeless guy. That and he had a car by all accounts. And a gun, for that matter. No, I'm sticking with my theory that he was in the area to work out of the temporary labor office and something went down. Probably drug related but possibly just a lunatic who snapped.
