While I agree rifle prices have become too high, just because the AR-18 was designed to be "the American AK" and cheap to make, does not mean that every rifle based on it's action is a cheap rifle. If they can bring the GROT to the US market at $2500 or less then I say it would be worth the price.

Problem is a lot of these rifles are very underwhelming, especially at the price point.

Combine that with typically bad triggers, little aftermarket support, and questionable parts availability if you break something.

This is mostly a problem with imports, domestic American stuff is at a great value point at the moment. I've seen a bazillion listings for DDM4V7's for $1100 over the last month or two.

Well that's a broader issue with the market isn't it? Depending on what someone wants it's probably not worth it because to Americans they're just novelty items from across the sea. Discussion pieces, LARP gear for the range.
If you want utility and you're getting something other than a basic bitch M4gery you're making a massive mistake.

By now we should have something with a better charging handle location that isn’t a turd in some way.

The "American AK" is the AR15. the AR18 was explicitly designed to be cheap to make in Europe. in the US stamped guns have never been common so making them is uber expensive. We have always milled things here so milling is cheap. In Europe semi-auto guns were generally stamped so the AR18 was perfect for their industry.

The AR-18 has long been considered the American AK (or more accurately the AKM), because it was designed to be manufactured in less developed countries for cheaper by using a lot of stamped metal instead of milling and machining, much like the AKM. I've never heard anyone reference the AR-15 or M16 as being the "American AK" since it doesn't use stampings. Yes I know early AKs used milled receivers as well, but the most prolific variant of the AK uses stampings specifically to make it cheaper and easier for less developed countries to manufacture. The AR-18 was intended as a direct competitor to that for Western aligned countries, hence the "American AK".

Most likely as soon as someone gets a sample. It's been a thing of beauty to see how fast people have been churning out a super safety for everything this year.

Most states the background check is done right there while you wait and it doesn't take long at all. If you live in a Pinko state that has their own background check or a waiting period, then it could take longer.

As much as I want to own my own KAC LAMG, I'd be perfectly happy to one day own a Freedom Ordnance FM-9 (one of those 9mm PCCs that can feed from either belts or GLOCK mags) and an FRT. It's probably the closest I'll ever get to owning my own belt-fed MG. Also a huge fan of the H&K HK21E/HK11E/G8
 
I was inspired by all this discussion of AK's and by extension all Soviet and Russian firearms to do a little speculative writing about what future Russian service rifles may or may not look like.

I will start this out by stating the obvious, The Russians will probably not use the 2023 model AK-12M1 to the rest of eternity. They will almost certainly, at some point in the future, design and adopt a service rifle that at the very least vaguely AK Shaped.

Here is my baseless and unqualified speculation about several options for what that rifle might look like


Option #1: AK-12M2.
This would essentially entail the final evolution of the AK-12 family. The Russians finally pony up to solve the partially resolved handguard and top cover problems. For the handguard they could make one out of stamped steel or aluminium with M-lok slots laser cut in the flats before bending and welding. Have it attach to the current or an enhanced version of the receiver cross pin but maybe do it do it like a 416 with a bolt. For the top cover either either make a really over engineered example to get the last little bit of wiggle out or just make Zenitco and KC collaborate on a purpose built, AK-12 specific top cover. For chambering make it either 5.45 or maybe that 6.02mm cartridge they're experimenting with.

I think something like this is probably the most likely out out of anything, they were already approaching this wth the AK-EVO program.
Option #2: Militarized AKV-521 and or TR-4
The Russians adopt the AKV-521 or the cheaper TR-4 or something resembling them. In either 5.45 or 6.02.
They would get
1. Monolithic top rails
2. Left side charging (in the case of the 521)
3. Automatic opening and closing dust cover (also only with the 521)
At the cost of
1. Increased cost per unit (lessened with the TR-4)
2. Minor ergonomic issues and training scars (although these would probably be minimal as current production AK-12's already have ambi safeties.)

The TR-4 is just an AKV-521 but only the receiver rail is monolithic and it retains the traditional right wide charging.

Option #3: AK But Aluminum
The MoD forces KC and the two biggest manufacturers of aluminum gun parts, Zenitco and Sureshot to work together and says to them "Make us an Aluminum AK"
It would probably just resemble the old Sureshot prototypes but with the ambi safety of the AK-12M1

Option #4: The Russian QBZ-191.

The Russians adopt a rifle with significant AR DNA just like the Chinese did, like an enhanced or CGNL NL 545 or T&T-545 but aesthetically different.

Personally I rank the likelihood of eventual adoption in the order of listing.

i carried an HK USP on my duty belt for years because the alternative was a gen 2 Glock 17 (which i really didn't like although could make due with) or the S&W 4006. since i really wanted a .45, i opted for the USP. the only other .45 authorized was the 1911A1 but i wanted a higher magazine capacity and something more modern for duty use since i felt like it would get all kinds of abuse being carried around constantly and polymer + stainless felt better imho for something exposed to the elements constantly.
