Because they have a monopoly on cheap AK imports via their contract with Cugir/ROMARM. Even though they're more expensive than they were a few years ago, WASR's are still cheaper than Arsenal or Zastava guns.
Honestly I'll take a WASR-10 over some of the American attempts at AKs considering things, but it's nuts how QC leaves much to be desired. There's a lot of good options though even now, most of the Eastern European nations export AK clones of some type although 7.62x39 is in flux due to changing import restrictions, although Russia is out of the loop for now, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan are now exporting to the US, dunno about 5.45 right now, I almost got into it myself but the rarity of 7N6 turned me off to it before I could obtain anything.

The infamous WASR QC issues were really only a product of the early 2000's, 2010's onward they greatly improved (my WASR underfolder came out of the box in a very nice condition). 7.62x39 to my knowledge really hasn't had too much or a price issue, because a huge number of companies really started to see the writing on the wall following the 2017 round of sanctions and started looking to diversify their sources. Lots of steel cased ammo is coming in from Bosnia, and Arsenal of Bulgaria has started exporting ammo. I believe even Century's Red Army Standard line has switched over to Romania for their ammo. There's also some of these new companies such as Sterling where I can't help but suspect that the country of origin is actually Russia but they'll list it as elsewhere on the box.

5.45 is definately an issue since pretty much no one but Russia makes and uses it in mass quantities. Again, Romania makes some which is where Century's new Red Army Standard 5.45 comes from, but not a whole lot gets in. That's why I try to snap up as much of that stuff as possible whenever some place SGAmmo or Lucky Gunner has a good deal or whenever someone "just happens" to find another pallet of pre-sanctions Russian 5.45 ammo.

Well at least there's 5.56 AKs now and you can get followers for your 74 magazines and a few 5.56 magazine options, so you're not completely fucked if you want a small caliber AK. No more Golden Tiger of any caliber, and sadly I'll probably never see any 8M3 either as that would have supposedly would have been a decent SHTF round. Sadly not much opportunity to buy ammo for me right now as I've got shit going on that requires cash plus the prices aren't going any lower for the time being. It's probably going to get worse next year before elections, although the current administration's popularity isn't exactly at an all time high.

I could never get into the AK platform. I built a couple of them over the years, but when I was done. I looked at them and said, well optics are a bitch, reloading this steel cased weird primer stuff is a bitch, my local range won't allow me to shoot cheap steel core projectiles and they won't make good "hog guns" they both just gathered dust. I was a .300 BLK fanboy as soon as it had its official comeback/name change, I was never was a huge fan of 5.56. I won't question it's lethality but, .30 caliber projectiles objectively cause much more damage and penetrate barriers more effectively.

Also, fun fact.
A few days ago, I was enjoying a (several) nice glass of one of my favorite whiskys the fiance brought home. Was out doing chores, when out on the property, I usually carry my old S&W 5 screw in 38spl on my hip for varmints. Had come back in, so unloaded the gun. She asked me to take our 91 Seville (Caddy with the Good Hair, not the Northstar variant) out to put gas in it.
I'm not too drunk, our local gas station is only a five minute drive. Nice little place owned by a respectable pajeet family.
Go down, notice that the windows and one door glass are now replaced by plywood.
Walk in, notice the two most wiggerest wiggers to exist standing at the register. Straight up look like characters from the Boondocks.
Usually keep a light jacket or button down over my carry, but also a little drunk, so don't notice it's on full display.
Fresh off some work in the field, so look like uncle yokel's hokel pokel.
I go up to the counter, and the two wiggers have airsoft guns in their waistbands (cheap looking, so I hope) that they have their hands on.
Nice pajeet son looks worried.

They're buying papers, and they keep asking how many people are working there that day.
Indian dude looks down at my exposed revolver, 2 wiggers look down at my exposed revolver, and then decide "Yeah, just the papers then."
Pay and leave. I realize that I had not replaced the bullets before heading out. Realize how absolutely fucked I would have been had they had iron and weren't cowards..
Pajeet is thankful.

I go home.
Moral of the story, do not leave your house with no bullets, kiwis. My asshole was tight the whole way home.
Based 38 special enjoyer. Always pack a speed strip with you fren
It's ironic that Japan makes such quality firearms despite there being a general lack of them in their society. People point to Japan and say America should be like them but fail to understand how different their society actually is.
It's sad really. They know how to make good shit but they're citizens ate so restricted. At least they have airport culture, that's something

Been a while since I bought 7.62x39mm, but one of the boxes I bought was indeed Bosnian steel case, 90's mint. Cheap shit too.

So while I'm waiting for the action to get here (supposed to be Wednesday), anyone have any not insanely expensive "nice" glass recommendations? I have a Primary Arms Slx 4-16x44 FFP (the one with the Christmas tree reticle) that it'll be wearing for a bit (and I actually like that scope on my 5.56 Ruger American), but assuming it's a shooter, I kinda want to put something nicer on it down the road but not something significantly over $1500.

Any opinions on splatter-schemes for painted rifles? Here's a recent one I saw:

Painting the grips looks lazy to my eye, but the rest is interesting.

And maybe it's just me, but this thing is all sorts of retro-future sexy; I love all that bakelite:

I mean if you had ran behind something, could have loaded up, but that would have been tight lol. Glad you're OK and the power of Smith and Wesson protected you
I love this old Smith. It's my first ever gun I brought back from the grave. Started my love for gunsmithing.
May have a wondersight on it because the rust ate up the back sight. May have some internals not native. It may even have a mistmatched blued 4 Inch Barrel I put on it from a model made 50 years later than the nickel frame.

But it runs, goes bang every time, always eats the wide array of ammo run through it, and it (and the pre-64 Model 1894) would be the guns I'd always grab in a "you need a gun to work right now that will not fail under the worst circumstances" situation.

:feels:

I feel the same way about my CZ-75. It's been through three recoil springs (each replaced at around 5000 rounds) and everything just got smoother over time.

Something I also didn't know existed, the Kalashnikov Israel/CAA "AK Alfa"; this one with Nigerian "special forces"-
Screenshot_20230808-181215.png
The AK Alfa rifle is an interesting attempt to upgrade the ergonomics and handling characteristics of the famous Kalashnikov AK-type weapons, while maintaining their remarkable reliability and simplicity of use.

It appears that the AK Alfa project was conducted by a group of Israeli engineers from the Command Arms & Accessories (CAA) Company, with certain advice “from outside”. AK Alfa prototype rifles were first shown in 2016 during international exhibitions (ShotShow in USA and Eurosatory in France). This was under the brands of ‘Kalashnikov USA’ and ‘Kalashnikov Israel’. In the American market, the rifle is known as ‘AK Alpha’.

It must be noted that official representatives of the Russian Kalashnikov Concern provided no comments about this weapon. However it should also be noted that the core components of the current AK Alfa prototypes are Russian-made Saiga carbines, produced by the Kalashnikov Concern.

Technical details:

As noted above, the core of the current AK Alfa rifles are Russian-made Saiga semi-automatic carbines in 5.56mm (.223) and 7.62mm (semi-automatic or converted to select-fire by CAA). These rifles use complete (but modified) Saiga stamped steel receivers. also bolt groups, barrels, gas tubes and certain trigger parts. The stamped steel receiver is enclosed in a polymer shell that forms an integral pistol grip, trigger guard and magazine well. The standard AK-style top cover is replaced with noticeably longer aluminum alloy top cover with integrated Picatinny rail. The top cover is attached to the forend of the receiver by dovetail and to the rear of the receiver by a removable cross-pin. To remove the new top cover, one first has to remove the lower forend (which is also attached to the receiver by a cross-pin), then push the retaining pin and slide the cover forward and off the gun.

The Saiga bolt carrier is modified by milling off an integral bolt handle and replacing it with a removable bolt handle that can be installed on either side of the gun. A standard AK-type safety / fire mode selector is replaced with the more comfortable ambidextrous safety / fire selector. These rifles are planned to be made in semi-auto only (civilian) and select-fire (Military/LE) versions. Side folding, adjustable shoulder stock is made from polymer and folds to the left. AK Alfa rifles can use any AK-compatible magazines in 7.62×39, and Galil-compatible magazines in 5.56/.223.

Ian has done a video on a Yugo Tokarev. I want one man, one of the reproductions, I don't care, maybe even before the 40 cal, I like the look, seen it in movies, and seeing the breakdown just makes me happy, and think about how it would look with my SKS

That's the reason I got my Model 36

It was used and abused well before I got it, quite old with the spur hammer, but I knew it'd be reliable as shit, and that 38 has a good track record. Got a pocket holster and Bianchi speed strips for it too.

Even if you have a Frankenstein, it's still a Smith in the end, which is what truly matters.

Is it worth the extra hundred bucks or so to upgrade from a Streamlight TLR-7 to TLR-8 and get the laser included? It's for a full size pistol (that will realistically never get used in anger, but also shut up). I want the flashlight either way, but I've never had a laser before of any kind.

YMMV, but I've never really liked lasers - you end up hunting for the dot, which for me takes longer than just getting a good sight picture.

Why that one over the regular TT33? I've shot both and did not see much difference other than the +1 mags on the Yugo, making it more difficult to find mags. Oh yeah and a captive guide rod I guess, but that doesn't make a huge difference.

I'm going to assume this is your "something goes bump in the night" pistol? I've been a believer in lasers on HD pistols, I had a friend of the family who was a fed, described lasers as having a psychological value in addition to simply helping one aim.
