Fellow Kiwis, I plan on going backpacking through my local state forest but I need a recommendation for something to concealed carry. The woods here are relatively safe but it's not unheard of to discover murder victims or encounter drugged up vagrants so I was thinking of getting a small revolver. Never shot 38 or 357 so I'm not sure which is a better self-defense round and what models are comfortable enough to carry loose in a pant or jacket pocket. I see a Rock Island Armory M206 in 38 and a Taurus 605 in 357, both pretty cheap but they could be pieces of shit for all I know. I'm new to carrying in general and I don't want to bring my bigass G17, any info would help

Does anyone have experience with this? The leftmost screw on this optics plate is so tight I’m starting to strip it when I try to loosen it. How can I get this thing off?

in order of escalation:
1. fix in a vise and use a t-handle or longer key for additional leverage. stop if excessive
2. use PB B'laster or Kroil or Seafoam, et c to penetrate and allow to soak for a few hours, then try to remove again. stop if excessive.
3. try freezing it then use a smart tap with a brass mallet to knock it loose and try to undo. stop if excessive.
4. apply heat to the area with a heat gun, around 160-180F is generally safe for something like rocksett or rust if you can work at it a bit. you can try 500F or so if some idiot used red loctite on it. you can use a brass rod or something as a heat sink for fine control of heat as well as kaptan tape to protect finish.

if none of the above works individually, either repeat previous steps to gradually work it away or cut a slot with a file and unscrew, or drill it out. repeated heating and freezing can usually break a carbon'ed up or rusted out muzzle device free after a few cycles, so it could work on a screw.

j-frame with shrouded hammer. both .38 and .357 will work, .357 in a k-frame is "better" - an example being the model 649, and you can always "download" with .38 spl +p like HSTs or Cor-Bon or something. although if you pick an airweight (any lightweight body) then it could be difficult to shoot if you are new.

you could also just get a Glock 26 or 43. might not be fun to shoot, but it's familiar and very concealable for most people.

have you considered just carrying your 17 inside a jacket via shoulder holster or inside waistband holster at the appendix and wearing a wind breaker or un-tucked flannel over it? if you are new to carrying and concerned about safety and do not have some time to practice and develop a carry method for a revolver, then consider postponing the backpacking trip or just carrying the 17 and work with the gun you already are familiar with. do not compound unfamiliar carry method with an unfamiliar gun in a situation where you are concerned you will have to use it to not die in the woods to wandering murder-hobos.

Don't carry loose, even if you don't care about safety it could get lost. Even with zippers, guns are pretty heavy and could break the zipper, but probably less likely if it's a truly small revolver. Also, you draw time's going to be horrible. If you already have a Glock, could you spend money on a good holster for it?

For that much they had better be fucking amazing.
They are, a very close second in protection to an active muff type but a shit ton more comfortable to wear for 8+ hours.
Online 99% of the time. Better deals, less bullshit, most gun stores are run by some greedy/retarded SOBs
Couldn't agree more. The last weapon I bought from a local dealer was because they happened to have something I'd wanted for a good bit and it was priced competitively with online retailers.

If you have the budget for it check out Gunfighters Inc. Kenai holster. See if that might be an alternative to consider.

Yeah, 99% of the time, fuck retail stores. My LGS is insane with their price gouging. Never seen them actually sell anything. It's pretty evident that they don't, because they recently had the audacity to increase FFL transfers from $10 to $30 per item (not including NFA items, those cost even more.) I'm not paying $30 per transfer so I drive out even further now to do my transfers.

What, you mean their "sales" with 10% discount after a 20% markup over MSRP isn't a bargain? Ya gotta support your brick and mortars, sonny!

For the money you could spend on either of those revolvers, you could get a used J frame, a nice one. 38 special is proven, especially with such loads like the FBI load, and many new ones that come out yearly at this point. A used J frame will also be lighter, so far easier to carry if you go the revolver route.

The indoor range I go to noticed how much 9mm I burn through. So they offered me a "deep discount" if I bought ammo from them in bulk. They waned 399.99 plus tax for 1000rnds. They were displeased when I told them I get 1000rnds of 9mm for 240$ shipped to my door.

wtf, i sell GD's for $400/1k. 115gr FMJ target loads should be half that for plinking stuff if it's bulk ammo.

For camping I just do fanny pack carry and always have the fanny pack on me at all times. Slower on the draw with a proper holster but with hiking it’s out of the way but reachable and comfortable without giving me any hot spots. Not like I have to worry about brigands suddenly showing up and demanding my goods but it’s always there and always with me if needed.

Bro I'm fucking jealous, EVERYWHERE in my state is $40 no matter what. I'm so spiteful about that shit that I make it a point to print, 80%, or machine all my shit and tell everyone I know to do so. No way I'm paying some spook 25% of the value of a gun just to spend a couple minutes at a computer. They also tried to sell me a Savage 64SR for like $450, and it wasn't even the one with the fancy stock.
Maybe all those old guys hanging around the shop have the right idea, get your money's worth by wasting their time and socializing.

I needed a Buckmark mag quick though, and ended up paying $47 for the thing. Somehow those fucking niggers made it to $53, which is the same price as a 2 pack of factory mags on eBay. Fuck that place, they're reselling Ozark Trail fishing stuff from Walmart for like double, while being 15 minutes from a Walmart. Also bought some CCI Suppressor HP .22lr a year before and those fuckers ended up charging like 30cpr for the stuff, so I think that they must tack on some crazy fees or not actually use the prices they put on the products.

How nice are the erbelestock gunslinger packs? I was thinking of getting one for 2 gun competition because I’m tired of hauling 2 bags and a gun case all day between stages. No I will not get a cart.

Ian visited a high end boutique German gunsmith who does ww2 repros in autistic detail and he found something...

The range will then probably Ban non range sold ammo....

Ranges and LGSs are so greedy it's criminal

I'd carry the G17 in a shoulder holster as said above. If you're familiar with the gun, it's worth the inconvenience. Or get a larger fanny pack and carry the G17 in it on your chest crossbody, like some of the urban youths are known to do nowadays.
