the "Mil-Spec" series, from the half dozen i've purchased and sold, seems to be a fairly decent pistol, definitely a cut above the older GI series 1 and series 2, as well as their more normal 1911-A1 model. very few MIM parts, almost all forged with a few cast bits or extruded bits. magazines weren't anything special other than having a dry film lubricant. the MSRP is $849, with distributors and probable volume sales bringing it down to maybe $550 and change depending on exact package options. you might be thinking of the TRP models, which were better than the Kimbers they competed against back when "bad Kimber" was around, but had lackluster features and quality at the prices asked and Kimber was terrible at the time.
the "Defend Your Legacy" model is a special variation of the Mil-Spec with a greatly reduced price and omitted some features like forged MSH, et c in reasonable places while maintaining the good features (forged slide and frame) and cost reducing others (plain wood grips, stamped and extruded trigger and trigger bow, et c). for MSRP $649 that's pretty reasonable and it generally has a street price of around $550.
