Got to check out a Colt King Cobra at a local store today and I gotta say, it was most definitely what's up. The fit and finish on it felt real solid. Not sure if I want to drop $850 on a revolver just yet though.
The King Cobra is the cheap snake, if you're going to spend big bucks on a Colt you may as well go for the Python or Anaconda. At least, that's what I would do.

I was looking at used guns in a pawn shop out of boredom. Was thinking about maybe getting a DA/SA .38 if the price was right and I could find something that wasn't banged up and rusted to hell and back.

The gen 5 Glock 17L is getting released soon. Only as a distributer exclusive with a limited production run. I'm buying one as soon as they release

You saw the target model or the 3"? Cause I had the 3" and it was the only gun I sold in less than a year cause that fucking thing pulled hard left no matter how I aimed where it was a 3 'o clock, on a shooting rest or sitting down didn't help. You want something similar for the same amount of money that can perform? Go with a Kimber K6s or a Chiappa Rhino for the novelty.

Yeah it was the 3" version.

The King Cobra is the cheap snake
the King Cobra was marketed as an LE revolver along the same lines as the Trooper years prior (some guys i worked with carried the Trooper Mk III and Lawman since they were grandfathered in when people switched to autos). the Python was popular among some state police like CA Highway Patrol with various special versions like "New Police Python" and "California Combat Python" with 4 and 3 inch barrels. it was found to be pretty good but not overly rugged for regular use and was swapped for the Trooper Lawman or Mk V, or S&W model 66 (-3 i believe).

this was all before my time but i had enough old farts to talk shit with when bored that i heard the same basic story for years.

by the time i joined the force everyone was on autos and only very very few people still had revolvers, although your off duty or backup gun had more leeway. you had a list of authorized makes/models and specific features it had to have. now it's actually a list of exact make/model and you pick the stocking number off the list with authorized letter when you buy your duty gun, off duty gun, and backup gun. it can be wacky. one IRS CID guy i know has the Glock 19 duty pistol, a Glock 19 backup gun, and Glock 19 off duty gun. they are all identical and all have legally distinct purposes where he must always have his duty 19 or backup 19 on him during events like warrants or qualifications, and his off duty 19 cannot be used for duty use since it's the "off duty" gun, but is for off duty CC only.

i have all kinds of weird agency stories, like how tax payer money buys expensive gear that never gets used because of public perception, but the agency is forced to buy and train officers for budget reasons (use it or lose it) or legislative (all state LE must have this gear even for railroad code enforcement or food production inspection or some other very very low key LE duties) or regulatory compliance (agency not exempt from generic training programs that are mandatory for all federal agents, et c).

S&W model 66
great guns. i have a 66-3 from 1986 thats a great shooter. just don't run .357 with projectile weights less than 158gr though. you WILL crack the forcing cone which will require a new barrel. this is not a problem on the new production model 66s with a standard forcing cone.

i just use .38/.38 +p on mine.

158gr .38 spl at 900+ f/s hard cast lead semi-wadcutters are a very mean round for stopping men who mean you harm. SJHP even more so if you get the velocity right for your barrel length. lots of history for these loads spanning 50+ years of duty use (Winchester's LSWCHP was 890 f/s from a 4" barrel and that was the 1970's for duty use).

variations for older loads like LRN or 147gr et c exist but are narrower in scope and tend to ice-pick in flesh more often than actually stop someone cold. and forget about 200gr+ since that requires some additional requirements for safety and consistency. while the classic "FBI" load might not be the hotness for duty use anymore, it's still an excellent personal defense load in a lot of situations.

Are cheaper .38 revolvers worth it at all?
yes and no. if you know how to inspect a revolver you can find some real gems like the Rossi 877. if you don't, some excellent cheap S&W and Colt revolvers can be had on the 2nd hand market (inspect before buying for obvious issues). decades ago, S&W was dumped on by the majority of the gun market (dealers, customers, even agencies) for signing on with the Hillary-hole Clinton provision which cratered their prices and more or less forced them to merge with Safe-T-Hammer. and with lots of people swapping to autos, there are lot, a lot, of S&W K frame revolvers on the market gently used in great condition, and parts are expertise is plentiful for those that are willing to put in a bit of work now and then to maintain them or work out minor issues from decades of use.

for newly manufactured revolvers, they're still a good buy, with heavy competition from Ruger (and not so much Colt). you can also find a few Taurus gems but it's hit or miss.

to wit: under $300 can nab a good S&W model 64 if you plan on never getting into .357 Mag, and it'll be high quality and cheap.

That's an interesting infodump. Almost forgot about the Hillary hole controversy.

I've seen a few old Colt's and S&W's at local pawn shops in the last couple of days priced between $350 and $500. One of them had a shaved hammer spur for some reason that completely ruined the ergonomics. Is the new CZ-Colt actually that bad? You'd think CZ would've improved the quality because they make some solid semi auto pistols.

CZ doesn't have much history making revolvers. CZ's ownership is at a corporate level as a holding company mostly. that being said they've largely left the production of the revolvers in Colt's hands at the factory, only doing management and executive duties with some marketing and sales support on the side - COVID screwed with Colt's staffing and there were more than a few customer shop master gunsmiths that retired or moved to a private trade when Colt was winding down in 2019.

i would say the new Pythons are on par with the 80's and 90's Pythons... which is kinda bad for the "Rolls Royce of revolvers", but perfectly fine for service and shooting.

I never expected the new Pythons to be as good as the old. Just as long as they were better than Taurus and on par with Ruger and S&W.
