I don't think I can afford this. I've had to really reduce my options of where I'm looking just because of how expensive homes are. I might seriously end up in Florida again despite the shit climate because that's what's in my range and I won't have to improve the land at all to get Internet or utilities like I would in the Dakotas or Rockies. I can cope about Florida's climate by just being active in the morning or evening (which is how most southerners cope with the climate), and I can double-cope about the climate by appreciating the broad range of crops that grow there.

I'm thinking what I should get is a 7.62×51mm NATO for a marksman rifle, a 5.56x45mm NATO AR platform, and then something else for shortrange.

This video looks at .300 Winchester black tip slugs, and while they don't penetrate, I am pretty sure that hole behind the plate would still kill you. And if it doesn't, I will shoot you twice.

Check out the midwest. Homes and land are still dirt cheap, and it's not as backwoods as many think. You can be pretty off the beaten path, away from everyone, and still get decent internet. Not to mention, the culture will be much friendlier to you than a lot of places. Good ol boys are still good ol boys. Of course, you'll have to get used to midwestern cuisine. You get a deer steak or fried catfish and mashed potatoes at the local diner. Plus, there are opportunities to do something homesteady if the desire takes you while you're there.

While picking the right caliber is important, you can always work the other half of the equation. It would not be impossible to modify a round to essentially act as a sabot for a tungsten-carbide tool blank. Heavy, hard, and more likely to penetrate. Depending on specific location these may not be legal to make but it's something I've thought about before.

Make sure to budget heavily for ammo and training, at least the value of the rifle itself, you're new to guns and there's a lot that people in this thread take for granted just because we're all severe guntists, the most important gun by far is the one on your person and your knowledge on how to use it effectively.

Most basic bitch advice I can give you is a solid kydex holster for a Glock 19, go take shooting classes and defensive shooting classes.

I was under the impression that Florida was extremely expensive. I guess North Florida/Alabama are cheaper though.




There are options for basically armored closets that are about the price of a Gucci Combat setup. Depends on your eventual area of residence though.

The only shotguns I’d want for a home defense/SHTF situation is the Beretta 1301 or the Benelli M4… only the finest Italian craftsmanship will do.

It's kind of absurd that it's $150 for a L4 plate but you can't buy rounds to pierce it. How am I supposed to protect my constitutional freedom to be online?

I looked this up and I am seeing information that green and black tip ammo for 5.56 appear legal, but I am seeing reports that green tip does not pierce L4.

It won't, as stated previously the qualification for L4 is that it has to stop .30-06 M2 Armor Piercing ammunition, which means it can also stop the various 5.56 armor piercing rounds.
You can purchase ammunition that will punch through most L4 plates, but it will be things like .300 Ultra Mag or .458 Winchester that don't really exist in semi-automatic platforms (outside of really badass M1 garand rechambers).

Shotguns have the meme of being the best home defense gun ever, but in reality, a buckshot spread out of a cylinder bore is only dinner plate-sized at 25 yards which is already much further out than your average home defense distance. An AR-15 is superior due to the ease of follow-up shots and still very good terminal ballistics that are perfectly capable of incapacitating an attacker in one shot (and you can shoot someone 2 or 3 times with an AR-15 before you can shoot them twice with a shotgun), not to mention 5.56, even in non-AP form, has superior performance against armor than buckshot or slugs. Due to the size of their ammunition, shotguns are very capacity-restricted as well, meanwhile 30-round magazines are nice and compact and ubiquitous for AR-15s. Shotguns are overrated.

This. Don't just stop at the CCL class. Find reputable instructors teaching handgun and carbine courses.

Also don't bog down your AR with unnecessary bullshit and avoid Amazon. Get a good optic, sling, light, and a ton of ammo+training.

Streamlight ProTac HL-X for a rifle, I don't put lights on my pistols so somebody else will have to chime in.

Sling:
Pretty much any two-point sling, there are different mounting options, so come back when you get a rifle and we can give more specifics then.

Red Dot Sight:
Romeo 5, they're a good deal for the price and they just work. You can usually get them ~$100

Low Power Variable Optic (LVPO) (These are typically 1x - 6x magnification):
Viper PST is mid-tier, Strike Eagle or Primary Arm's offerings if you're budget. I don't mind the differences between budget and mid-tier but some people do.

Iron Sights:
Just go with Magpul Backup Iron Sights (MBUS). They're decent value for the price.

Agree. Every time I see a gun without irons, something in my bones quivers. Just something about the blasé nature of not having a backup way to aim your gun if your super turbo indestructible solar powered laserbeam optic somehow doesn't work makes me queasy.
