not really? i figure if he has barricades to interdict vehicles along a road or other perimeter to force dismounts (a ditch of sufficient size), then a .50 is handy at that range and it takes more than a bit of skill to pick off people at 500 meters (doable with practice). to halt the vehicle not so much if it's stopped by something. if survivors come closer, then turn the advantage in your favor by having a kill zone at close quarters. at that point volume of fire to achieve superiority is ideal and a mag or drum of 7.62 NATO (AP requiring less rounds) will greatly discourage people from entering further. smart use of angles and cover combined with practiced tactical training for movement and shooting indoors should greatly tilt the odds in favor of the defender, even against armored opponents.

it isn't likely to last as a static defense if they have a literal bus load of armored people or if they're using explosives or something to breach walls. at that point you will again want to use cover and knowledge of the layout of the kill zone to your own advantage. darkness, odd angles, methods to defeat PVS gear with extremely bright sources of light, et c. if the goal is survival and legal consequences are less important, at a certain point a clean concrete room is ideal for jellied petroleum and an ignition source. plates don't do much against being set on fire.

pretty much. perimeter security for advanced notice will be very important, but i'm very sure that isn't a surprise for him. catching him unaware buying groceries or something with cartel-style car blockade and interdiction would be likely for a former military disturbed persons with a grudge to settle and enough skill and anger to go forward with a violent plan vs seething and empty threats.

as i've previously mentioned, a large part of winning fights is to control the battlefield, pick the location and methods of engagement and deny the target an ability to counter you in a meaningful way. these are not new strategies, they've been in military doctrines for decades if not centuries.

Don't know if anyone's gone over this. But regardless of what rifle Null picks up, he may want to consider reloading his own rounds.

Reloading's fairly easy. Just get yourself a reloading manual and a good micrometer. You can also make yourself a Reloader's Bible where you play with different loads and record your MOAs. Different rifles like different loads so some will be more accurate than others.

A little story about the Barret. When I was younger, my best buddies brother had gotten a civvy, one shot bolt Barret.
One winter afternoon, with about 4 feet of snow on the ground, we decided to lay out some 2 inch thick steel plates. He had tracers, about 10 of em.
So we each shot the Barret with the tracers. Punched straight through the plate, yes. Even a small bit of fire for a few seconds on it.
However, the sound that came through those pro level earpro still almost deafened me. And though the ground was covered with 4 feet of snow, the second I shot I was somehow surrounded by an impenetrable wall of dust. I call every 50 cal "Dustmakers" now because the force of shooting it somehow pulled dust from under the snow and off the snow covered trees.
Josh will not enjoy shooting this for defense. And most definitely will not enjoy shooting it inside. A piddly .22 in an enclosed room is enough to feel your eardrums bounce.
I fully support him buying one for fun because barrets are fucking dope.
But he also needs a battle rifle. Just a bog standard fighting gun. Get a Scar or a big fat commie caliber gun if you want armor punch, but for God's sake, just at least get a regular ass rifle.

The Reddit Special: BCM upper + Aero or PSA complete lower, is a great economical option. Then throw a quality dot on there. Good qc, good barrel, nice rail etc. Training and good shot placement beats the meme of wanting to 1 shot punch through level 4 armor. Hiding and waiting to ambush an assailant as they cross through a fatal funnel has much more value than a berrett indoors. Hell, you could have that gun that 1 shots through a level 4 plate, but when you're in that high stress environment you will default to what you've trained and could miss the shot. Just train the Mozambique drill and or get really good at clearing a plate rack fast.

Assuming that it's kept secure and free of moisture, is there any problem putting ammo in long term non-climate-controlled storage? Specifically, how much does temperature matter here? I've tried to do some research and read everything from "it's totally fine" to "it's incredibly stupid".

Should be a ok. So long as temps are below say 100f and above freezing no issues.

It really depends on the ammo, in my experience. I've had new brass go green in a week and I still have a backlog of old 40s-50's era 38Special that sat in a moldy ass barn for who knows how long that still goes bang.
Edit: If you're not talking about scientifically hand loaded, exact foot pounds of press autist loaded ammo and referring to "I bought a box of Winchester." the store bought stuff can sit forever. Everyone who grew up in a gun family probably still has a box of grandad's 12 gauge or 30-30 that still fucks as hard as they day it was bought.

I was thinking about weatherstripping it and throwing in a portable dehumidifier and keeping some ammo there. I don't live anywhere with extreme temperatures.

The green metal ammo boxes with functional gaskets in a bigger box with a dehumidifier should be A ok.

11.5" is the best shorty 5.56 length, imho. 11.5" has ~40% more dwell time than 10.3", which results in slower internal parts wear and lower likelihood of malfunctions.

In ukraine the drones that drop bombs tend to average about 70 yards up based on how long it takes the projectile to hit the ground.

The surveillance/spotter drones seem to be at like 150-200 yards.

The dropper drones could go much higher but in the time it takes the bomb to reach the target the target may move away so 70ish yards seems to be the sweet spot between being hard to shoot down and not having a super long delay between drop and detonation.

Shotguns are great for fov drones diving on you or for surveillance drones coming down to look in a building

One gun I'll recommend for Josh is the CMMG MK 47 Mutant. Fires 7.62x39mm, uses AK mags, handles like a AR. Pricy yes. But it would compliment his AR-10 loadout well. The AR-10 for punching holes, and the Mutant for thumping squishy targets with way less recoil (and at a cheaper price). And both would be 30 cal, nice synergy there.

I'll expand on the .308 platform with stay away from a G3/HK91, yeah they got that retro look and HK quality and magazines are dirt cheap but from being able to shoot them as much as I have I can say that they are heavy as a motherfucker, kick like a mule, the drum sights are funky, the mag release is also funky even the paddle and inserting a new mag can be tricky cause the magwell is so thin. no bolt hold open and the charging handle is a a heavy bitch. I still say go with either an AR-10 or the Zastava M77.

.300 BLK is a fun caliber, especially for home defense. A shorty AR chambered in .300 BLK with a suppressor firing well made subsonic solid copper projectiles is not only easy on unprotected ears, it's also devastating on flesh and bone. Put a few of these in a loony troon's pelvic girdle and then put one under their chin for a good old canoe'ing. It'll be a closed casket for sure.
