Took my oldest son to the range today and had a helluva great time. Brought the Staccato, FK Brno PSD, HK Mark 23, S&W Model 57, Browning Buckmark, Browning BL-22, and the Mossberg .22lr lever action rifle I bought for my son for his 8th birthday. Got the red dots for the Staccato and PSD zeroed. It was my first time shooting the Staccato, FK Brno and Model 57 since I bought them, and the first time shooting for my son at an actual range. Every other time I've taken him it's just been plinking cans and bottles out in the boonies.
The Staccato ran like a gas-soaked weasel with it's ass on fire. I was able to get a pretty great group at 20yds using S&B ball ammo, and I zeroed it for the Hornaday Critical Duty 135gr FlexLock +P ammo I've been carrying in it. The FK Brno PSD was a helluva fun gun to shoot. You really know when you touch one of those off. It's like a .357 Mag going off (850 ft. lbs. at the muzzle), but recoil was very controllable. Kinda like shooting my Mark 23. I didn't group that well with the Model 57. It's been a long time since I've shot magnum wheelguns. Just need to get back into the groove with it.
My boy shot everything at least once. He said he favorite one was the FK Brno. I plan on taking him more often, even if it's just to shoot .22s so he can build up his skills.
I'm happy that I've got the Staccato all set up now. I'm going to experiment with some other ammo to see what it likes best, but so far it's happy with the Hornaday. I have a box of Underwood 90gr Xtreme Defender +P, the kind that have the flutes cut into it so it looks like a Phillips-head/cross-head screwdriver, and if it runs and groups well with them then I'll likely buy more for winter carry since they won't potentially gunked up and fail to expand when they punch through heavy winter clothing like traditional hollow points sometimes can. I've also got some Gold Dot 124gr +P as well.
Speaking of ammo, I bought some of those non-pyrotechnic tracers in .45 ACP since it was some of the cheapest target ammo I could find. I think the box of 50 was only like $19. Anyways, they actually do work. Some of them didn't, but most worked, though they were a little hard to see in the bright lights of the range and at such short distances, but if you were out in the dark and shooting at a longer range I think it would be a lot easier for the shooter to see.
Edit: Forgot to mention that shooting that Browning BL-22 that I inherited from my father-in-law was really nice. Honestly it's one of the sweetest shooting .22 rifles I've ever shot. Ran really smoothly, groups nice and tight, and feels great because it's so light and handy. It's definitely going to get a lot of use with my family.
