I have ordered gun related stuff online from these guys. I actually wound up returning it and they were professional and fair about it. Talked to a guy on the phone a couple times and they seemed alright.
They are near Fort Myers, and we don't know if you will be closer to the Keys or the Panhandle.

As long as the gun store is reasonable it doesn't really matter. There is very slim mark-up on guns, and there shouldn't be too much variation on pistol prices for a given model. You are going to know the rock bottom online price from internet searches. If a brick and mortar store near you has what you want, will let you finger it first, or maybe even test fire a range gun first, then it is worth an extra $25-50 over the rock bottom internet price. Handguns are usually like this. Some stores with ranges work a discount system on a rental if you make a purchase.
You might see a bigger price differential on more expensive long guns like a nice AR15, or semi-auto shotgun. Or maybe local shops don't have exactly what you want in stock. In that case it might make sense to shop around, or just buy online and pay the local dealer FFL transfer fee (check what that is first).

Things to look out for:
- Guns are all priced high (like $100, or more, over market)
- Charging way too much for basic accessories like magazines or ammo
- Store run by total dipshits, or assholes
- Super weird vibes for any reason
- Too much counter salesman B.S. (upselling) which no one needs in the age of the internet
^Consider leaving if you observe any of these.
While I do engage in friendly store conversations, my transactions are limited to 'Do you have X gun?, How much?, OK, here you go. Thanks, bye'

Here's a "stroll in the park" thought: If the 7.62x51 NATO was 7.62x39 instead, would the M14 have been everything it was supposed to be?

I think the Armalites are still superior, of course, but the concept of an M14 with a curved AK mag hanging out of it amuses me, and it might not even be a bad gun.

the answer is no not only because this is already a thing but because what makes a gun good or bad isn't the bullet the gun shoots. its still the same gun in .223 or even in .308, its just bigger. when boomers talk about the past they love to frame it with this gay relativistic posturing that separates what they're talking about from reality so they can just talk forever about some idealized version of the past separated from the actual constraints of the past in the hopes that their idealism will manifest something in the future - this is one of those things. the gun would be an SKS with marginally better scope mounting options. it would be the same as every other 7.62x39 rifle.

These guns are fine weapons, but we don't live in tarkov, we aren't picking this shit up off the ground. we live in a world where you have to buy these things and a mini 14 costs three times as much as an ar-15 and anybody who does want one is probably just going to buy one in .300 blackout because the guns and the ammo are cheaper and easier to find

The SKS exists and you can mod it to hold 30 round detachable mags. Going deeper, there is the type 63 rifle, that the Chinese made, which basically is what you're asking for:

But to get into your question further, I actually like the M14 from what I've shot of a M1A clone. It's light and handy. It should have immediately been set up in a DMR role. There are just issues with the semi pistol grip.

Even the type 83 above had issues with recoil and accuracy due to the grip in full auto, among other things, and it was in 7.62x39mm. I think the M14 is a fine semi auto rifle, and remarkably light given it's just steel and wood. Really it's just a product of its time. The AR-10 and even the FAL out perform it in full auto and just general ergonomics with their pistol grips, which is what it was designed for, to be a battle rifle, and not a semi auto rifle.

No jerky, old fudds and boomers I remember from yesteryear are gradually disappearing, anything Remington from before the recent acquisition is approaching $1,000 minimum(740, 760, 870 Express etc.), weird low-production/limited importation guns are now coming out of the woodwork, retro AR parts are more plentiful, guy with the Valmet was cool and I wish I had more money on me to get it.

ETA: Actually good guns are reasonably and sometimes underpriced, throwaway trash like Heritage revolvers and the like have a 100% markup. I've noticed this consistently.

I will always, always stan for the Remington 870 Wingmaster made in the 70's and 80's. Not hard to find used copies in good to excellent condition. You can either cut the barrel or mount a new, shorter barrel on it. The Mossberg 590 is also quite good.

I can tell you that people I've seen shot with a shotgun that actually made it into my trauma O.R. had a long, shitty recovery ahead of them if they survived. An even bigger "if" for them making out of the E.D. into my area. Shot placement is king but even so, a 12 gauge shotgun will fuck people up something fierce if the full load hits them even somewhere non-vital.

Dummy Thicc Leader, I echo the sentiments of others that gun stores can sometimes be a good resource for firearms or accessories. Price and availability have made online stores far superior in my experience, with the local gun store being used only for FFL-related things. If you do a bit of research on this I bet you'd agree. Once in a while a local place will have a used item you just don't see online commonly (where I got my unfired S&W 29-2), but it's rare.

I may be in the minority, but I despise the M1A. From the factory, mounting optics on it is fucking retarded in how high they end up. So one either has to mount a cheek piece riser on their rifle or use a third-party chassis system. The placement of the op rod on the right side of the rifle is just right to fuck with where I like to put my support hand. Finally, in a good, usable DMR setup that rifle is fucking stupid heavy, even more than an equivalent SCAR (which is a fucking chonker as is).

Thread tax: I found out one can ship themselves packages to a hotel they're staying at. In fact, I found out that's quite common. So that's how I'm getting my ammo to myself when I travel for training classes or matches that need 4-digit+ round counts. Hint: fucking lie about what you're shipping or nobody will take it. Actually, following most rules and laws is retarded and life shows us this quite often.

Finally, I'm a little fucking salty none of you told me about this. I know for a fact some of you knew this.

Hardly in the minority, it's overpriced and crap. It's inexcusable but unsurprising that Springfield is having a hard time putting out rifles that don't rattle apart over time with regular use.
Their pistols are better than their rifles at this point.

Dont know much about Florida specifically, but Bass Pro Shop or Sportsman's Warehouse. They will have just about any of your standard shit in stock (or ship to store from their websites), new in box, probably at a better price than most independent shops. I'd love to patronize more independents, but it is what it is.

Apparently Florida doesnt have Turner's Outdoorsman, though they do have

Yesterday was spent at the range, .22lr at 100yds in the morning and .308 at 600yds in the afternoon, so that was nice.

What wasn't nice was the 3 fuckwits in the next lane in the morning waving around guns like they were Harry Potter trying to cast "shootus bystanderus", shooting 3 foot groups with 5.56 at 100 yds when they weren't off the target entirely and generally being a danger to those around them. Remonstrating with them about their complete lack of safety got us "I was in the army, I know it's ok". I hate these people.
