The SKS exists and you can mod it to hold 30 round detachable mags. Going deeper, there is the type 63 rifle, that the Chinese made, which basically is what you're asking for:

I have owned a couple different AK mag SKSes over the years and they're pretty cool, when they were $500 or less it was definitely worth it. Nowadays people want too much and they really aren't great guns so I wouldn't recommend them to anybody who is not an advanced SKS collector.

The SKS-NR is the best one as shooters go. I wish I hadn't sold mine but I wouldn't buy one again for what they're going for now.

My gun is fun to shoot but it’s heavy as fuck. I’m debating if I should keep the scope or switch to a primary arms micro prism and magnifier. The bipod acts as a foregrip but it’s a bitch to keep steady taking potshots at 200 yards. I kinda hate my vortex strikeeagle, it’s alright but not worth the weight. Neither is the streamlight hlx laser, the light is okay and takes rechargeable batteries, but the laser sucks dick.

Gov't profile barrel will do that, unfortunately, and it doesn't play well with attachments stacked on. Hit the weights.

I warned you, bro

Use the bipod as a bipod. Also, you're just starting out, cut yourself some slack. 200 yards offhand is not easy.

Lasers are niche and unreliable in general unless you're using night vision, lights are superior.

DOT ~ K98 ~ 8mm Mauser for sale

Thought about snagging this, but I don't need to spend the money. Its only $649.99, so even if its crap, its rather cheap for a K98k.

They've got another K98K - BNZ ~ K98 ~ 8mm Mauser for sale - for $799.99

Wish I had a couple thousand burning a hole in my pocket.

Here's a "stroll in the park" thought: If the 7.62x51 NATO was 7.62x39 instead, would the M14 have been everything it was supposed to be?

I think the Armalites are still superior, of course, but the concept of an M14 with a curved AK mag hanging out of it amuses me, and it might not even be a bad gun.

Or we could have quit being stubborn retards and adopted the FAL when it was still offered in it's original .280 British.

I may be in the minority, but I despise the M1A. From the factory, mounting optics on it is fucking retarded in how high they end up. So one either has to mount a cheek piece riser on their rifle or use a third-party chassis system. The placement of the op rod on the right side of the rifle is just right to fuck with where I like to put my support hand. Finally, in a good, usable DMR setup that rifle is fucking stupid heavy, even more than an equivalent SCAR (which is a fucking chonker as is).
To be fair, I only shot a M1A with irons. That was absolutely pleasant. I believe you though, because the DMR version of the M14, the Mk 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle (EBR) is a 11 pound chonker:

Still want one for cool factor though, though it'll never happen lol.

I could always mod my SKS to use mags, but that would likely mean irreversible damage, so I never really consider it.

I wanted an SKS for the longest time because it fills that incredibly comfortable Fudd-y niche where, minus the bayonet, you've got all the positives of a traditional "woods gun"
Wood stock, top loading with a bolt hold-open(fuck you Norinco), trapdoor magazine, ballistic capability roughly comparable to .30-30 standards, simple V-notch and post sights, and it's very light.

But I think I enjoy the idea of using one more than I would like having one.

I mean I love mine, but I admit it has limits compared to, say, a AK clone or a AR in 7.62x39mm. Really the cost anymore is killer. You can buy a cheap AR for what some are offering these days, 30 rounds of 5.56, rails, all that.

If you get a SKS though, they are extremely fun. Loading in stripper clips to a semi auto just has a special feeling. And they use a bolt system that literally was on a Anti tank rifle, because it is in fact a scaled down anti tank rifle, which is cool. Also the bayonet. Which is just peak asthetics.

You can also carry way more clips of 7.62x39mm than AK mags, roughly double the ammo load for the same weight, which is 600 rounds. Yes you can carry a AR-15's worth of ammo, but in 7.62x39mm. You will have to load 10 rounds at a time though, which is a downside.

Still I'm content with mine. It defends the house well enough. And it shoots great.

It suffers the same problems the M14 had, sandwiching the stock between the receiver and triggerguard/magazine assembly, so there's accuracy issues as well as not having a reliable spot for optics mounting.
I'm aware of the shortcomings which is why I bought a bundle of AR parts and a lower for the price of a Russian SKS back in the day. Considering it got me hooked on building and actually shooting regularly I think I won out in the end.

Don't disagree. Kinda wish I bought a cheap AR at the time tbh, though it admittedly wouldn't be as reliable as the SKS just due to being like 400 bucks, what i paid for the SKS. But it would have been more accurate and had detachable mags. It was 2022. I was still spooked from covid and 5.56 was scarse in my area. That was my mindset at the time. In a different time, I would have been in the AR club like you.

I personally havent messed with them but I had a buddy try a few of them and he got rid of them all after awhile. They're trying to make a PDW out of a pistol while not really achieving the full benefits of an actual PDW. I only see them useful in the situation where you live in a state that restricts your 2A rights and you're trying to squeeze as much worth out a shitty situation. Or you just find it neat as a tacticool gimmick.

Idk which one that is, but get a 9mm one, 380 sucks.

What's the carry style gonna be? A 48 or 43X with a Shield mag is pretty legit, and even the 43 with a smaller shield mag is still good for tighter areas.
I'm not much of a Gun expert (even though I should be) I would want to get her something small and preferably cute that she could use to defend herself.

edit: its an m9
