Mega Rad Gun Thread

I wanted an SKS for the longest time because it fills that incredibly comfortable Fudd-y niche where, minus the bayonet, you've got all the positives of a traditional "woods gun"
Wood stock, top loading with a bolt hold-open(fuck you Norinco), trapdoor magazine, ballistic capability roughly comparable to .30-30 standards, simple V-notch and post sights, and it's very light.

But I think I enjoy the idea of using one more than I would like having one.

I mean I love mine, but I admit it has limits compared to, say, a AK clone or a AR in 7.62x39mm. Really the cost anymore is killer. You can buy a cheap AR for what some are offering these days, 30 rounds of 5.56, rails, all that.

If you get a SKS though, they are extremely fun. Loading in stripper clips to a semi auto just has a special feeling. And they use a bolt system that literally was on a Anti tank rifle, because it is in fact a scaled down anti tank rifle, which is cool. Also the bayonet. Which is just peak asthetics.

You can also carry way more clips of 7.62x39mm than AK mags, roughly double the ammo load for the same weight, which is 600 rounds. Yes you can carry a AR-15's worth of ammo, but in 7.62x39mm. You will have to load 10 rounds at a time though, which is a downside.

Still I'm content with mine. It defends the house well enough. And it shoots great.

It suffers the same problems the M14 had, sandwiching the stock between the receiver and triggerguard/magazine assembly, so there's accuracy issues as well as not having a reliable spot for optics mounting.
I'm aware of the shortcomings which is why I bought a bundle of AR parts and a lower for the price of a Russian SKS back in the day. Considering it got me hooked on building and actually shooting regularly I think I won out in the end.

Don't disagree. Kinda wish I bought a cheap AR at the time tbh, though it admittedly wouldn't be as reliable as the SKS just due to being like 400 bucks, what i paid for the SKS. But it would have been more accurate and had detachable mags. It was 2022. I was still spooked from covid and 5.56 was scarse in my area. That was my mindset at the time. In a different time, I would have been in the AR club like you.

I personally havent messed with them but I had a buddy try a few of them and he got rid of them all after awhile. They're trying to make a PDW out of a pistol while not really achieving the full benefits of an actual PDW. I only see them useful in the situation where you live in a state that restricts your 2A rights and you're trying to squeeze as much worth out a shitty situation. Or you just find it neat as a tacticool gimmick.

What's the carry style gonna be? A 48 or 43X with a Shield mag is pretty legit, and even the 43 with a smaller shield mag is still good for tighter areas.

I'm not much of a Gun expert (even though I should be) I would want to get her something small and preferably cute that she could use to defend herself.

is she familiar with firearms and shown a preference for a Glock? what does a picture of a subcompact Glock (that you posted) have to do with "an m9"? an "M9" pistol generally refers to the US Army designation for the Beretta 92F or 92FS.

have you both visited a gun rental place (many ranges offer this as do training facilities) to go over handling and safety, what fits the hand, what is intuitive to control and operate and what she's comfortable to carry on her person regularly but won't interfere with her lifestyle or fashion? a gun in a purse or left at home or that is annoying to shoot or overly expensive (both the cost of ammunition and parts as well as the gun itself) or complex is a gun that is largely worthless in the context of a daily carry for personal defense.

That's exactly the case in Argentina where it used to be the only way you could get a carbine that was above .22lr and used detachable magazines, until a couple years ago where the local firearms control agency ANMAC started allowing AR-9 """pistols""" into the country, here we don't have any short barrel regulations and a handgun is still a handgun regardless if it has a stock or not so Roni kits were pretty popular, personally I'm looking to import a fixed magazine AR and a fixed mag M-14 to use stripper clips on since those are fine.

What's most important is it needs to be easy for her to use. Where is she defending herself? Is this for the home? Concealed carry? If it's just for home get her an S&W M&P EZ in 9mm, that's the quintessential wife/gf/mother gun and it has that title for a very good reason.

Don't fall for the "we took this gun and made it pink" marketing. Those guns aren't for women, they're for men buying guns for women. What matters most for your fiance is a gun that works for her in the role she wants, and that it's easy to use, especially if she is a firearm novice which is the impression I get. Unless you're trying to surprise her, take her to a good-sized gun store with a wide selection (or a gun show) and let her get her hands on a number of different guns.

Agree. 99% of guns men buy for women are bad choices for women, colored pink. You never want it to get left at home or rarely shot because she hates it.
Before Mrs. Balls and I got married, I planned to get her a gun to replace the little Galesi .22 I fixed that she was carrying. I did the standard "man buys gun for woman not into guns (yet)" and was looking at shit like Sig or kimber micros, Bersa Thunder, Ruger LCP and other various things that I would've liked to use or thought would be used little enough to matter.
Mrs. Balls did her own research and discovered the Beretta Cheetah, a gun I didn't even know existed at the time.
She actually carries it every day, cleans it, takes it shooting often, and it's her pride and joy so I know it'll never get left at home or forgotten somewhere.
Best possible thing you can do is to take her shooting, let her use a variety, get her into guns and carrying for self defense. She'll tell you what she wants.
