Not to worry, another company is carrying the torch of domestically produced VSS. BSD Fabworkx is creating a clone chambered in 300 blackout and should be showing prototype models at Shot Show 2025.
I've posted about this guy before. He's a sketchy (allegedly, former) pill and meth addict who may or may not have been or is currently operating as an SOT without a license and his prototype uses a chopped AR bolt with a middling quality weld on it (that first part isn't necessarily a bad thing)
Apparently, the guy behind this is a (former, allegedly) pill and meth addict who has been doing some greasy shit (

Oh and I don't know how true this is, but I've read accusations that Slagga never actually built the gun that they showed off, instead they just rebuilt and converted to live fire a chopped Molot Arms (which bears no relation to the Molot which makes Vepr's) blank fire VSS Look alike (which are mechanically different from real VSS's, being striker fired as opposed to utilizing a linear hammer and a separate firing pin). I would assume Slagga's plan was to use the rebuilt and converted Molot pseudo-VSS to generate hype (and maybe money? did they take pre-orders?) while they reverse engineered the blank fire gun in attempt to design a working production model.

That's the case for Brandon Herrera's VSS, which he's so very proud of.

I did not realize the manufacturer was playing things so fast and loose with being an 07/SOT. Thanks for filling me in on the background.

I would not be surprised if their unit was a kludged together blank fire gun bastard build. They were moving at such a glacial pace for production updates, I would have been surprised if they were actually able to build them from scratch.

FFL's.com lists an active FFL under his business name at what looks to be his home address valid until 2027, so I guess he decided to stop being stupid when he got that letter.

Are 20 inch ARs decent for home defense or 16 inch would probably remain the standard?
clearing buildings with an M16 (or even the few times i had a SCAR or SAW or M60), anything with a full length barrel was miserable. unless your home has an interior space measuring hundreds of meters or you live on a ranch or something and your fenced property is out a couple acres, you're better off with a mid length (16") of some kind, or get an AKM or shotgun with some slugs and some ghost ring sights.

20" and 16" are going to be more than enough to punch through your assailant and all the walls in your house (in America) with 5.56. If you are seriously worried about body armor, aim for the pelvic girdle, which will knock out both femoral arteries and lead to bleedout within seconds. Am I taking crazy pills, or is 6.5 Grendel and 300 Blackout just dumb if you aren't suppressing it?

8.6 is the other blackout. 6.5 is hopped up 5.56.

Can't speak for 6.5 Grendel, but .300 BLK is fun in general. I will say though, a real benefit of .300 BLK is terminal performance out of short barrels, and suppressing subsonic rounds for certain applications. A really short (6"-8") suppressed .300 BLK shooting heavy subsonic monolithic copper expanding projectiles is an ideal home defense weapon in my opinion. It's just not a common option because the ammo and guns are expensive, regardless of whether you buy complete or build.

You also really need an adjustable gas block if you want to shoot both subsonic and supersonic ammo, because the gas port needs to be pretty big to reliably cycle subsonic loads. This results in an over-gassed gun when shooting supersonic suppressed unless you have an adjustable gas block. That's why the notable .300 BLK shorties like the Sig Rattler and Q Honey Badger have adjustable gas blocks.

You also need a 1/5 twist barrel to make the most of the heavy subsonic projectiles. Again, that's why the Rattler and Honey Badger have 1/5 twist barrels.

tl;dr: Shooting supersonic .300 BLK out of short barrel is fun, but suppressed subsonic is more fun.

Steyr AUG master race! Got a full 20" barrel, but compact like an M4.

Speaking of reproductions, why has no one tried to make a reproduction M1 Garand? If you could sell it for less than a thousand, and in .308 or even 5.56, you would basically print money.

Don't forget proprietary magazines 😎

Because the CMP is still around and the M1 Garand was designed and made in a time where machines were expensive and labor was cheap.

These days a legit repro M1 would be a solid $1500 for .30-06 or .308.

Criterion makes barrels for them all day but good luck mass producing the receivers.

Maybe when the CMP finally runs dry (honestly I'd give them 15-20 years for M1s) someone will make new ones again. The CMP still has one or two more stockpiles to raid.

That and every damn fudd on the USA seems to have 3-5 mint or nearly mint M1s stuffed in an attic/safe/Box and are too fucking greedy to sell them for under $2k.....

Springfield Armory did once. They didn't sell well. They got a bunch of old tooling and built them. People didn't want to deal with the clips and there was still a fuck ton of surplus

You do know that there's a NATO stock for the AUG that accepts regular AR/M16/STANAG magazines, right? And that they're readily available on the US civilian market? You can even buy an AUG with the NATO stock straight from the factory.

Besides, the AUG magazines are some of the best 5.56mm mags available. Very rugged and reliable. And MagPul even makes Pmags in the AUG pattern.
