“The reaction of a certain category of players (online pirates/torrents and all that) is hardly adequate. It seems that people did not want to play the game, and were waiting for an excuse to spew bitterness. It turns out that for years we (the developers) have been trying to do something special and painfully, with losses, but a certain number of players believe that our work is not worth even a couple of minutes to install the Epic Launcher. Naturally, it’s their life and their right, but then what do they care about this Metro game? Obviously, they are not interested in it. I can only say that they were not our fans, our work is not interesting to them, and therefore I am not interested in the opinion of such people. What is the point of listening to their opinion personally (and not only)?

But, uh…! (laughs) let’s take a closer look at the situation. Someone says that by shitting on the Exodus and the previous games in the series, he will make the world a better place for the greedy developers. I can answer to that in extreme case, if all PC players boycott this Metro title, then the next entry, if it is to be released, will not be on PC. It will be for better or worse, decide for yourself. I personally feel sorry for the devoted fans, yes. But my assessment of the work done by me and my friends and colleagues will not change. I know for a fact that almost everybody who spills crap online is incapable of doing a piece of what we have done, and I hope we will do it again.”

Threatens to block future PC ports

He sounds like he's threatening but what is really going on is the fact that if a "boycott" happens, then when they look at sales for the next release, they might think there's no interest in the game by PC gamers and so there's no point in spending time making a port if it won't sell. But yea the dev is being a little bitch by putting it that way, he's really bending it to sound like "buy our game or else!"

It's sad because the people are not complaining because they have no interest in the game, as he claims, but because they do have interest but they don't want to make a habit of installing new launchers for everything. It's literally the exact opposite of how he's reading the situation. I guess it's just easier (aka. lazy) to think they don't have a point and are just entitled menchildren than to actually make plans to release in both stores.

PC market is basically the same size of the console market for gaming. In the end, they're the ones fucking themselves up the ass if they don't want to listen to half their players (not that I agree with all the launcher drama, personally).

Metro is a boring, easy, linear FPS who isn't even scary. The other day I booted up Doom 1 for the hell of it and it's got more ambience and actual jump scares than the whole of Metro. The setting is cool and original but other than that I'd rather shoot myself in the head than have to play it.

I guess they haven't been reading up on how well other games have been fairing going "Epic Store exclusive". Its dumb thinking they had the audience to bring to epic store. I say Metro is a pretty niche title all things considered. Popular yes but with the types that care about the storefront they buy it on.

I personally dont trust epic with my credit card because I get email about people trying to hack my account. It's the only launcher where I have a persistent problem with this.

Why would Metro jump from Steam to Epic's platform

I'm entirely guessing but I imagine Epic is giving out pretty sweet deals to exclusive titles in an attempt to kick-off their new store. Competing with Steam is a massive risk and they need all the help they can get - a few recognizable exclusive titles like Metro is as good as it gets for Epic - although I agree with Otis that Metro itself is not big enough for people to go "omg where do I install this, I need to have the new metro!" lol

I don't pay attention to gaming news, so I just heard about this decision.

What the fuck!? Why would Metro jump from Steam to Epic's platform, which is likely going to only be successful as long as Fortnite is still the flavor of the year.

I've read some theories on Plebbit that Epic is matching the difference that Deep Silver loses from Steam in order to promote the Epic Store. I think it's a plausible theory, Epic has enough v-bucks to play around in the online store space for at least a couple years.

well, that's awfully childish. if i was the dev, i'd actually listen to the feedback instead of holding the idea of PC ports hostage. not only that but i feel if they cancel PC ports they're only going to shoot themselves in the foot as they're removing themselves from a big part of the market. great job, devs!

I think it is a dangerous game they are playing because the V-Bucks are going to dry up and if they dont have the store off the ground by that time then they are only going to be left with a ruined reputation

After the backlash Metro is getting Epic should hope the deals are good enough for devs to risk losing sales over.

They were likely offered a lump sum payment for the exclusive and that % increase was probably on the table.

Apparently Koch media and Tencent have historical connections with eachother so that may have also played a role.

Pretty much this. They’d need something Cyberpunk 2077, Elder Scrolls, or Witcher-tier to make people even think about changing their main client without taking into account Epic’s rampant, obvious problems.

People dont want a launcher for every fucking thing. The reason Amazon dominated the retail market so easily was because companies keep thinking theyre on the same playing field and "Adapt or die, we're the ones who are going to adapt and change the market" -- were JUST LIKE Amazon! Dude I dont like Amazon/even Valve but they had your asses beat before you could even move or notice anything was going on.

Amazon had (and Steam has) everything in one spot while retail stores struggled to push their in store credit cards (which people bitched about how annoying they were) and they couldnt really match the aggressive business practices or get their customers to really "trust" them, instead of coming off as just corporate shit. (Ironic)

I mean theyve known this shit for at least 10 years now, everybody kind of understood all aspects of both sides of the argument, and of course theyre going to pick sides but wouldnt you have learned by now?

I mean beyond that, why do you think anyone wants all that shit on my computer. I have ADD and am cluttered as hell so as a kid I thought that shit was neat, could all potentially have a use or customize my computer--but over the years Ive grown out of that and become jaded as Ive moved computers, I try to keep my shit simplified (plus having so much shit, and applications or whatever actually makes it harder to not be disorganized and lose or forget shit), especially because in the days of Facebook and Google, NOBODY wants to have their computers bogged down with a hundred different one-use platforms that are all potentially running in the background and collecting data on you. You poisoned the well years ago.

I remember when a launcher was going to the Start menu and looking in my Games folder to find what I'd just installed off of CD.

But anyway, yeah, the Metro games suck. They're like someone took the linear parts of the Stalker series (the walk through the Chernobyl plant in Shadow... and Clear Sky and the underground tunnel part in Call of Pripyat) and stretched them out over 11 hours of game play. Oh, and made them shitty.

We've already discussed this shit quite a bit in the Epic Store thread, but the short version is that console sales and Steam are the only reason the Metro games gained penetration in the first place. The games are niche titles, enjoyable if not terribly optimized, and did reasonably well for what they were.

Deep Silver pulling this shit two weeks before release, after using Steam to fucking advertise the game for over a fucking year reeks of bullshit, and the argument that this was solely for a bigger cut of the pie doesn't hold water when there's like four other platforms they could have gone multiplatform on while releasing on Steam (Steam, GOG, Evolve, Discord, etc) and chose not too. The exclusivity deal with Epic pretty resoundingly shows that Epic drove a dump truck of money up to them to get them to do this. And since they are shipping the physical copies with Epic keys, that pretty clearly demonstrates that this deal was in the pipe for a while and they just used Steam to maximize advertising and pre-orders.

That's going to go over with the people who actually wanted this fucking game about as well as an abortion in a Disney movie. Humorously, the series writer lambasted this decision and basically declared that their siding with Epic was the doom of the franchise before someone at Deep Silver told him DELET THIS:

This shit is going to fail. It's going to fail hard and with no lube.
