with early grav suit you can get early screw attack. with early screw attack you can get early PBombs. About the only thing that you /need/ to do is pick up storm missiles or the plasma beam solely to avoid any damage dropoff otherwise the enemies will take too long to kill.

I've only played Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1.

Both are pretty damn good I say. Ridley's arena in Super can suck a dick though.
If you like those games, I'd recommend some super metroid rom hacks, Hollow Knight or axiom verge over a lot of the rest of the metroid series. Prime 2 was ok, but nowhere near as good as prime 1, prime 3 was Meh. zero mission is a decent game, but feels more gamey than super metroid and isn't really the same, fusion is a weird playable daddy/daughter fetish fanfiction between samus and a computer modelled after dead ex commander. Other M continued that fetish. Also, I'd go am2r over Samus returns.

forgot about this one, just in case anyone else wants to try it

you can power-slide jump out of this gap if doing a damage boost isn't consistent enough for you

I was just happy to finally get the fucking morph ball 2 hours in. There was some insanely autistic level design on Artaria and far more backtracking than even Samus Returns. It was such an insult to have 95% of the areas blocked off because you didn't have the morph ball until you Evaded EMMI's, reached the third area, Evaded EMMI's again, got the tri-beam, Evaded EMMI's again and then had to Evade EMMI's while you waded your way back to the first area. Sliding is autistic and a poor replacement for the morph ball in the early game.

They also brought back memories of why QTE's died as a trend in the early 2010's. They were fucking terrible and not fun when you have to do them constantly.

No other metroid game, spinoff or otherwise, was this terrible until at least the end of the game before the final boss where if you wanted to go for 100% items, that was on you and most of the areas made more sense. Its even more noticeable on the second playthrough.

I hated that one room under the elevator area in Artaria with the shootable missile blocks in the ceiling. It was such a specific place to hit that blended in with the unshootable floor tiles, that I had to look up a guide on my first playthrough. It was like experiencing DSP's constant confusion, but over actually bad level design and for a legitimate reason with every other passage blocked off or inaccessible BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE THE FUCKING MORPH BALL.
I had no trouble with that missile block at all and the powerslide is extremely busted thanks to the way it leads into jumps. you can use it to completely bypass one of the bosses because it gives your charge shot limited wave beam properties for some unknown reason;

the item order isn't the same as super but we haven't had a game that's this packed with out-of-sequence gameplay since Zero Mission, and this is only the second official day of release. I don't think reverse boss order is possible but given the way that the teleporters work it genuinely might be given enough effort.

Can I just say dread probably has my favorite implementation of the speed booster so far in the series
Super had this problem of it being a face button making hard to shoot while doing it, especially if you wanted to set up for a shine spark, the clicking in of the left analog stick just feels so natural and the fact you can carry on a shine from a slide makes the thing have so much more utility
also thank fuck we killed the auto run speed booster from the GBA era, that shit was so fucking annoying to just run and accidently activate, made me feel much less in control of it as a power up
shinesparking along with ballsparking are easier than ever, and while I think midair shinesparks have been removed (which is a shame) it feels so satisfying to charge up and not just go off immediately that it makes up for that loss for me
Edit: NVM just pulled off an air shinespark, 10/10 best shinespark in metroid

Not sure if I should post this here or in Metroidvania. I only put about 2 and half hours into it but I love it. Finally got the bomb for the morph ball to give you an idea how far I'm in. It's like they actually listened to complaints people had about the last couple of games about being too hand-holdy and the (I guess you could say controversy) over Samus' character in Other M. It's the first time in a while where a boss fight doesn't feel like it's a one and done and it's over before it really began.

It runs really well in Yuzu BTW.

I personally think it's great, but your mileage may vary depending on what you think is important in a video game.

If you don't like the thought of being one-shot through three energy tanks then I wouldn't recommend picking it up, though. The bosses all hit like trucks and this doesn't stop even after you get the gravity suit.
Facing the first boss rn (scorpion lizard thing), and it's surprisingly difficult. Having a blast so far though, but I always liked Fusion more than the other games anyways (heresy, I know).
If it hasn't started yet, I anticipate whining from the usual types who love to hate anything difficult in modern gaming. Some of these sequences are pretty tough. I can't wait to hear the whining.

Yeah, the game isn't balls crushing hard by any means but there's a decent enough challenge without being frustrating. I've had to go at each boss at least 3 or 4 times before I get the patterns and timing down and everything which is a lot for a modern Nintendo game.

Did Nintendo basically realize that most 2D Metroid fans are older than 30 at this point and give the okay to make a game that isn't designed for toddlers?

I actually had a post typed up in response to this but I had to delete it all because I started having second thoughts when I remembered that the majority of people who are mad about Dread are either nostalgia-zombified supertrannies or hollow knight fanwankers (with the rest of the peanut gallery being made up of contrarians and shitposters).

The general reception from people who've actually played the game and aren't either mechanically stunted or deliberately looking for reasons to justify autistic rage has been way more positive than I was expecting.

Here's an image proving beyond all doubt that every single Metroid has sucked.

Their whole life cycle goes from blood sucking parasite to apex predator. that doesn't normally happen in nature. Usually metamorphosis doesn't lead to a drastic change in nutrient sources.

Parasites tend to just stay parasites, evolving limbs and hunting isn't needed because it's redundant and wasted energy.

Samus Aran waited. The lights above her blinked and sparked out of the air. There were X in the base. She didn't see them, but had expected them, now for years. Her warnings to Comander Malkovich were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Samus was a bounty hunter for fourteen years. When she was young she watched the spaceships and she said to dad "I want to be on the ships, daddy."
Dad said "POWER IS EVERYTHING!"
There was a time when she believed him. Then as she got oldered she stopped. But now in the space station base of the GF she knew there were X.
"This is Adam," the radio crackered. "You must fight the X!"
So Samus gotted her palsma beam and blew up the wall.
"SHE GOING TO KILL US," said the X!
"I will shoot at her," said the Kraid and he fired the belly spikes. Samus plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the X," she shouted!
The radio said "No, Samus. You are the X."
And then, Samus was a Metroid.

I'm not here to talk about Metroid Dread because I am not getting to play it for a long time, but I am here to share the most hilarious part of the whole shebang.

I'm sure everyone here is familiar with how Nintendo's been trying to advertise Metroid Dread as this scary game that is scary because of the scary robots and Samus starts out with a new suit that is white in a white area and that is so scary.

Then you get to last month's Nintendo Direct, where the Japanese branch decided that this is how they would advertise the game:
Someone tell me this song is in the game, because if so, this may be the most absolutely tone deaf thing I've seen in a while.

Been playing Metroid since the original on NES, though I've never been hardcore or particularly good at them. Decided to clean up the map and get 100% in this game. First time I've 100%'d one of these games. I'm impressed with myself that I was able to get the items that required shinespark bullshit. One of them took me two hours, lol.

I’m not that far into it. I’ve only been able to play it sporadically because of work and family obligations, so I only just now got the morph ball. I’ve been really digging it so far. My main complaint is that it feels weird when I free aim and fire missiles. My dumb brain and hands just don’t want to coordinate half the time, and I end up running around instead.

I'm getting better at it but I have the worst time aiming with free-aim. It just feels a little bit too sensitive.
That's my only complaint so far.

It's called the japanese marketing department working with major record labels. Everything in Japan has this kind of song playing in trailers since the 80's.

Even the original Resident Evil intro in Japan has a song like this and that was a scary game.

How the hell is anybody supposed to figure out this is how you get early bombs for the quick Kraid kill using the morph ball booster hidden in the wall
