Sol Valley is how Samus accesses each of the five main key-hiding areas, which does make it the largest completely interconnected open world Metroid has ever had. Sort of. The problem is how much of a rigmarole it is to get back and forth between anywhere. This overworld puts its worst foot forward. After I obtain the bike early into the game, tech hero Mackenzie informs me I can check out the remaining three key signals in any order I like. Score! Except, not really. I bike to one, go through a little opening space. Go up an elevator. Go along a gondola lift. Poking into this frosty area, I hit an ice wall that blocks progression. I go back across the gondola lift. Back down the elevator. Bike to another corner of the map to find I can't access that marked area at all. The tech guy then phones me to ask me to check out the volcano. I bike to that corner of the map and load across a motorbike tunnel. I can't access this facility either, but I do get a fire chip that means I can use fire blasts. Time to break the ice wall, right?
Wrong. Why would Samus be able to install her own hardware? Now I have to bike to the other end of the overworld, go through a shrine-like entrance to the forest area, use a cargo cannon to slowly blast to the other side of the forest, so that Mackenzie can finally allow Samus to shoot fire blasts. Then, of course, back across the cargo cannon load screen, sprint through the shrine entrance, bike across back to then sprint through the entrance to the ice level elevator, actually go up the elevator, then across the gondola, and then finally I can access the next dungeon-like area. This is the most egregious moment in the game, but it's literally my first experience of navigating the overworld, and you have to slog back to base camp to install upgrades a fair few times later.
:story:

I'm still going to play this game, since my buddy's buying it, so I don't really give a shit. I've always preferred 2D Metroid, that is real Metroid, anyway.

Prime 1 had a backtracking mess like this in the second half, except it wasn't this terrible, and then they learned from it and fixed it in prime 2 by making every area connected to every other area and the hub area. They un-learned a solution to a problem they already solved 21 years ago for the sake of modern gaming checkboxes.

Laughed mightily.

Bros... If anyone had "issues" with Prime 3, I think it's about time you replayed it and realized how fucking good it really was.
- Based NPCs, not annoying, Samus chilling with other Bounty Hunters like herself and her space dad named Dane.
- GFed has not a single nigger in it.
- GFed names their capitol ships after European mythological Heavens (Olympus, Valhalla).
- 1 escort mission, ends quickly.
- Fuck tons of new powerups and upgrades.
- Visit 4 different planets with their own meticulous architecture, flora, and fauna.
- Space ship instead of gay padding motorcycle.
- No hollow BOTW-tier open world.
- Best FPS controls next to mouse and keyboard.
- End game fetch-quest that you can prepare for while playing making it the best one out of the 3 Prime games.

Prime 3 deserves more love, especially now.

Sadness covers me like a blanket. Tuck me in, let me die.

But you can't skip the escort missions where they accompany you and commentate.
Oh, God, no. Well, I'll play with the sound off.

I fucking hate escort missions. There has never been a time when anyone said to their friends, "Hey, do you guys remember that one game with the escort mission? Man, that was so great!" Literally never ever happened.

Oh and Myles apparently is the least annoying one.

Now I see why this game is a laughingstock overnight
They really did kill the good one and give us the that should have been cancelled, didn't they? Monkey's Paw moment!

Nobody ever remembers Hunters, do they? Genuinely the best FPS on the DS(not like there is much competition), maybe now you niggers will appreciate it more when you see the alternatives.

I had the balls to skip Other M since I saw the writing on the wall, buying a switch 2 for this was a huge fucking mistake though. i never would have guessed they would go back to this garbage after nailing it with Dread. Guess I can see if a nephew could use a switch 2 for Christmas.

Mercurysteam... Please give us a kino hardcore 2d metroid prequel where we play as Ravenbeak and my life is yours.

World of Warcraft. There was that one goblin town in the barrens and to the east of it there were two escort quests. One escorting a goblin to a fort and one helping someone escape.
They were a fucking nightmare. Because people were killing mobs and they'd respawn as your guy was moving so you'd get huge groups just fucking everything up.

I think that took like 30minutes to an hour. IT was just horrible. This was over 20 years ago now?
What were they thinking? We've known how shit escort quests are for over 20 years.

An oldie but a classic lesson from all of this

After looking at some metacritic reviews, it seems like the central desert is the game’s biggest flaw followed by the opinion of some of the lowest review scores that Metroid Prime 4 plays it too safe. These were my two big concerns from the prerelease footage, so I wonder how I’ll ultimately feel about it myself. When the original teaser dropped, I speculated that there would be some open world-like design, but I didn’t expect the implementation they went with and I also didn’t expect a straight up carry over of the original run’s gameplay. With the gameplay though, I can appreciate the quandary they were in: either change the gameplay up and have people complain that it’s different (nu-Metroid) or keep it the same and have people complain that it’s outdated. Metroid Prime 4 honestly should have just been a new Metroid series instead of continuing the Prime name and carrying the baggage and expectations that come with it.

Really, all this does is make me want to play Echoes now; I never finished that damn game. I was the same way after playing Pikmin 4. It was fun, but way too easy, and lacked some things I liked even though it included some other stuff that was cool. My Gamecube's still there, just waiting for me to play again, patiently. I need to finish Pikmin 2 while I'm at it too. It's always fun when an old game is just hard enough to make one turn off the console and seethe for a minute.

Is it just me or do all the positive reviews seem really defensive like they are almost downplaying all the criticisms of the preview coverage while also kinda admitting the validity of them. The characters are cringe, but dont worry they arent there that much. Their quips are unfunny but you only hear them once in awhile! The GB review even parrots the number one talking point that defends the bland open areas "This isn't breath of the wild, this is Ocarina of time." I love Oot but it seems like a bad look to comparing your 2025 open areas to a N64 game.

Seriously the positive reviews I am reading give me very weird vibes and makes me want to wait for the honeymoon period to be over and see what the actual fan consensus is.

Well yeah, this is just one big cope session from people stupid enough to fall for the hype. Being defensive about it shows they know the game isn't good, and that's all that matters.

BOTW and later Pokemon SV broke Nintendo, as far as they are concerned as long as you give players an open world and a recognizable brand then it doesn't matter how good the game is, they will buy it anyways. I can see Nintendo going in the same direction Ubisoft did about a decade-15 years ago and turn all their franchises into monogenous open world slop, filled with DEI and reddit writing, how well MP4 sells will be an important metric for them.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked the Fed troopers in 3. They made the world feel bigger, more "real", and never really interrupted gameplay. I also liked how they were characterized. They had little to say, were quick and professional. They felt how futuristic sci-fi soldiers should feel. I remember early on in the game there's a trooper you can talk to who's fixing a control panel or something. I don't remember the exact line but it was something along the lines of "Hey Samus Aran, I get you're a big deal and all, but as you can clearly see I'm busy. So stop bothering me." It was a real minor thing but I really liked that interaction, because it makes perfect sense. We're in an active war zone, we all got shit to do stop trying to make small talk. I also liked how the troopers weren't really all that impressed with Samus either. Which again makes sense. These guys have seen shape shifting aliens, giant mechs and a cyborg dragon all in the span of one day, Samus is tame in comparison.

But this is demonstrably not true though. Most of Nintendo’s single player output is not open world.
  • Fire Emblem Three Houses and Engage: Both not open world
  • Xenoblade 3: Large interconnected environments but not open world
  • Pikmin 4: Not open world
  • Donkey Kong Bananza: Large levels but not open world
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Not open world
  • Bayonneta 3: Not open world
  • Metroid Dread: Not open world
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World: Not open world
  • Mario and Luigi/Paper Mario: Not open world
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3: Not open world
  • Super Mario Wonder: Not open world
And these are just the major titles. About all of there smaller games or spin-offs are not open world either. Don’t get sucked into the /v/ hivemind and start actually believing that all Nintendo games are open world.

Boy am I glad I forgot all about Prime 4, just another reason I'm glad I'm not that into console gaming anymore.

I disagree.

Space Marine 2 has an escort mission near the end with the Dreadnought.

It's such a funny mission because while the game says the objective is to escort him, the reality is he's escorting you, he's disappointed that Magnus didn't show up to the fight, and he one shots a Heldrake by chucking a giant statue at it with his one arm.

Great, now how much did each of those games sell? Let's compare that to the numbers BOTW and Pokemon SV brought to the table. Nintendo knows what sells, they're going to move these franchises into the modern day cancer of DLC bananza/DEI/Open World eventually because that's what makes them money. Or at least that's what they think makes them money now.
I want this to be real, that would be hilarious. Letting in 343 devs into your studio is peak not giving a shit about your IP because you know it will sell anyways, case and point.
