At this point, Samus is beginning to come into her own as an individual, joining the Federation Army--only to be placed in a unit of only men with a commander who for whatever reason specifically chooses to needle her at the end of every briefing:
I'm guessing this is either a retcon or the "Adam made it sound dignified" thing from Fusion was added in localization. I could believe either.
Because without getting to see her expressions, it makes her come off like a completely emotionless metal block, making many of the scenes between her and the other soldiers incredible awkward to watch.
One thing I liked about Other M is the way her visor in translucent until she "gets serious". It's a neat little detail.

Localization issue. Fusion's English script is really cut down and randomly rewritten from the Japanese script. For the specific part you're mentioning, here's the what the English version says.
That computer reminds me of a gruff Federation CO I served under named Adam Malkovich. He called me "Lady" on missions; from anyone else, it would've sounded sarcastic, but Adam made it sound dignified. Out of respect and with some irony, I named the computer after him.
And here's a quick translation I did of the equivalent Japanese text.
The computer's way of speaking reminded me of someone. Adam Malkovich. He was a brilliant commanding officer in the federation, and I served under him for a time. He always kept his cool and stayed true to the mission, and his decisions always quick and on the mark. But he was lacking in delicacy, and would sometimes get on my nerves by calling me "lady"... With great respect, and a touch of sarcasm, I started to call that computer "Adam".

And here's a quick translation I did of the equivalent Japanese text.
Props for going above and beyond and taking the time to translate the passage. :semperfidelis:

I always think I know Fusion but whenever I see a comparison with the Japanese I realize I don't really know the game at all. The passage you translated about Samus actually hating being called "Lady" explains so much.

Does the Ridley PTSD crybaby scene make any more sense in Japanese?

Nevermind I don't care what excuse they give that shit was fucking hilariously retarded.

Maaaybe not; as said above about unprocessed trauma, everything can be going along fine and dandy until the unconscious mind sees just the wrong pattern of events start to form and goes WHOA WHAT THE FUCK WAIT STOP I DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN and grinds all rational thought to a halt.

Which is what I believe is what was meant to be happening around Ridley's second appearance; the beginnings of control loss, of old patterns re-emerging without the conscious mind even being aware of it.

So, we have a Samus Aran who has a love/hate relationship with her former commander; love in the sense that she trusts him more than anyone else in her life, hate in the sense that his very presence threatens to drag her back to the state of complete helplessness that she's been running away from for the entirety of her life. And now, we take another step backwards:

Screenshot 2026-01-10 003919.png
Screenshot 2026-01-10 004022.png

I read this last line as "that's just how things were with him"; to Adam, any and all life was sacred once it came into being, and the act of doing anything which would violate those boundaries - even if done with entirely good intentions - would lead to his...disapproval? Rejection?

When your heart's already been torn open by circumstances outside your control and you allow someone in anyway, what happens when the exact same series of events even seems to be happening again...?

Screenshot 2026-01-10 005715.png

Remember this is all taking place in the unconscious part of the mind as it filters through all the events in search of anything and everything that matches a pattern that it happens...

seeing samus using military overalls is so fucking retarded, she gets out a suit of cool armor specifically tailored for her by the birds for her to use this fucking shit...
AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN BUTTON THE FUCK UP.

Probably took responsibility as most japanese higher ups do when they release a bomb (except sakamoto). The sad thing is I'm still betting that the open world was a demand by goytendo. The dumbed down levels, the handholding, the BOTW shrines etc. had to be a corporate mandate, I refuse to believe otherwise... But just like Sakamoto deserves to get shit forever for Other Mom, Tanabe definitely had some hills that he shouldn't have died on. If things like FedForce and the plot of Prime 4 were wholly his baby he definitely got wires crossed. FedForce was a legendary missing of the mark after the gut punch of Other M. When it comes to the Feds, Prime 2 did it literally perfectly, Feds are a base part of the plot, the "inciting incident", but they're all dead. It gives the plot weight, builds the world with the trooper logs, and characterizes Samus. Prime 3 was too much for some but the trilogy was built up and needed to go out with a bang, and it did. The NPCs were fine, good even when you see how they could have been done badly. Everything Prime 4 did badly Prime 3 did well. That's the best thing about Prime 4, it recontextualizes Prime 3 and the complaints people had about it, which were overblown.

What's ironic proof of this is that people loved Rundas, like way more than any of the Feds in 4 DESIGNED (poorly) to make you care about them. An alien bounty hunter, who didn't even have a face, who had just a few lines of dialogue at the beginning of the game before you're forced to track him down and kill him - was more popular than any of the human NPCs in 4. Why? Because Rundas was cool. Because Rundas didn't overstay his welcome. Because Rundas saves Samus. And because thematically, what happens to Rundas is foreshadowing for what could happen to Samus if she gives in to Phazon corruption. And he has a cool theme. There was a reason for him being there, unlike the troopers in 4.

At least Sakamoto got to show that he learned from his mistakes with Dread. I wish Tanabe got that chance too.
I'd argue he got too many chances. His goal was to branch Metroid out in some way, and with Prime the formula was well received - Prime is still considered a "spin off" even if it is canon. Prime 2 added a new dimension to the game (literally and figuratively) for better or worse, while Prime 3 diluted the "Metroid" part of the series into being individual maps instead of a continuous, connected world. Prime 4 is just a Halo game with Samus in it.

Honestly that seems to be the arc I see from Tanabe, slowly adding more Halo elements at the expense of Metroid elements. Federation Force was blatant in this, basically a Metroid version of Halo: ODST where you just assist the main character with whatever story they are progressing in. I don't hate experimentation with games since we've gotten some cool things out of companies taking risks, but the "risks" I see the Tanabe took with the Metroid series were all trying to desperately break out of the Metroidvania genre to reach a broader audience while alienating the existing fans and failing to draw new ones in when it's basically "just another sci-fi shooter" with a weird control scheme and very little connection to previous games. In the end he was given a lot of chances to stretch Metroid into success with different ideas, but none of them hit the mark. Best numbers I can find online show that Dread outsold Prime 4 in basically any metric you check, despite having 7 years of hype to ensure people knew it was coming.

The fanbase is smaller than Mario or Zelda at this point, but I hope this helps Nintendo realize they don't need to change Metroid for it to be a good game, they just need to make a good Metroid game and people will buy it.

What a shitty swan song.
Not everyone gets to end their career on a good note, and only a few ends up dying and leave their greatest work forever unfinished. Most people end up in disgrace: some gradually lose their touch overtime, other were overrated one-trick ponies who never had real talent to even begin with, and then proceeds to try something else and immediately fail.
Yes it sucks when the final work of an author is unremarkable at best and dogshit at worse, but this is how it goes, people eventually forget it anyway, ita the same shit that happened with George Lucas final movie.

Heh.

Tanabe will always get credit for helping on Link to the Past... and Sakamoto will always get shit for WarioWare..... I want another god damn real Warioland.... but Wario is fucking trapped inside the warioware dungeon forever.

And the prequels... and his "sorry for making nig nig binks" negro airmen movie, and his shitty indiana jones, and return of the jedi.

Lucas - The Giga-Hack who stole all of "his" best ideas from Dune. Seriously... the shit everyone likes from space wars was done first in Dune. It wasn't subtle, at all. If Lucas wasn't a hollyjew his kosher ass would have gotten sued into the dirt decades ago.

I was referring to strange magic.

I'm not a prequel hater, but I do agree that they aren't the best, since George Porgie had issue and writing dialogue and directing people, Indiana Jones 4 was heavily flawed but its close to be a good movie at least on paper, just like the prequels themselves (if you are a prequel hater)

At least we got Pizza Tower and Antonblast, but yeah it fucking sucks.
Honestly I'd love if goytendo tries to make Wario a villain again like in marioland 2, you know... Take old ideas that were never given the space it deserved or something, instead of re-using the same fucking villain for the billionth time.
Am I alone here in liking Warioware?
Never played it, doesn't looks terrible, but I really loved playing Warioland on gameboy when I was a kid, since Wario plays like a slower but more aggressive version of mario and the game in general was a lot of fun.
It's not that Warioware is a bad game, it simply isn't Warioland.

Getting back to the topic of Metroid, do you prefer 2d or 3d games?

Now that you mention it, Luke and his family being moisture farmers on a desert planet sure does have some pretty major overlap, at least Lucas went "eastern philosophy" instead of "middle-eastern philosophy" so we don't have to pretend muslim philosophy is even a little bit interesting.

Warioware is fun, a perfect blend of portable but fun gaming (on Gameboy) and decent motion controls (on Wii) where it's clear the devs didn't take themselves too seriously. Wario as a bad guy kind of morphed into "wario as a stinky but silly character to put in weird situations" because that's all he's been used for lately.

I definitely prefer 2D Metroid, but I think I'm generally a 2D over 3D fan anyway. I was just talking with my son about Starfox and how 3D rail shooters aren't very fun for me to play, while I really enjoy 2D rail shooters like R-Type. I actually wouldn't hate it if they made a 2D Metroid rail shooter where you are in Samus' spaceship. Heck, make it like Prime 3 where there are different planets you have to travel to in the ship and do 2D ground missions on - just steal the entire Kingdom Hearts gummy ship section (but make it 2D and good please).

Ehhhh, nah, once you realize Jedi-Diah was Solomon's real name.... the same Solomon who >>>>built the Temple<<<< (let's call it the Jedi Temple for short).... and then the Roman >>>Empire<<< destroyed the Jedi Temple....

Space wars is literally just jewish "muh temple, all empires are bad because they fucked with the jews" asswank. With all of its best ideas from the desert planet, to the empire, to the FORCE, to lazer swords - all stolen from Dune. Oy Gevalt...

Fucking Semitic HACK.

i can't recall if we ever used upgrades against the bosses in prime 4.
they all lacked something to make them stand out, at best we use the grapple to avoid sylux's attacks.
that giant robot from prime 2 lives rent free in my head with how cool that one was.

Maybe after another 2 or 3 attempts they'll realize people just want Samus to go on solitary, atmospheric adventures.

Honestly, I can't believe Prime 4 exists the way it does. They really keep trying to introduce other idiot characters into this franchise no one wants. It seems like such an "anti metroid" game.

I think the only upgrade I remember was psychic charge shot where you have to hit multiple arms of a boss or hitting the inner core of the flare pool boss.
