I fucking hate the spider, I fucking hate that fucking retard

but you just ate a chunk of meta-regression that will take 2 or 3 good runs to claw your way back from.
This is a bit offputting and it's unfortunate to see a legitimate fail state (no food, no cats, no money) but it's not gotten annoying yet although I'm teetering very close to the edge.

Also lot of people saying tank is mandatory? It isn't afaik, it is only useful for damage sponging. Cleric is definitely, Ranger is someone you can take if you want to and the other two are optional. I am really annoyed by the shittier buff spells, which about 50% are and some of the passives as well. I always lack a bit of foresight when it comes to rpg build customisation so I find it very difficult to pick traits with the future in mind, especially in things which involve synergies. That's probably why I don't like slay the spire and darkest dungeon cause I suck at both but I still like this for the time being.

What are some great synergies you've had? My favorite so far was a Necromancer with Last Gasp (when you get downed you heal all allies and damage all enemies, also gives an active Seppuku skill to kill yourself whenever you want), Coffin Flop (just a jump normally but if you're downed you can land on enemies to damage and debuff them), Bulletproof Vest (no injuries so no risk by going down every fight), and Bone Marrow (full heal after every battle). Every fight he just killed himself and nuked all the small enemies, then spent the rest of the map flopping around

Best I got was Stick!, which gives you a stick, and the passive Smash! which causes items to deal triple damage, but they break on use, simple but very effective.

I had a Cleric with "Thou Shalt Not Kill" which makes enemies take 10 damage when they kill one of their allies. it seems situational, until you realize that knocking enemies into each other counts as them dealing damage to each other. I killed a boss by just having my tank knock his minions into him, killing them and making him take ten damage each turn.

My Cleric had the Ability to “make another cat an Alpha” and with it both the Cleric and the designated Alpha would get a free bonus attack & full movement. This combos with a tank having the trample passive.

So in the end I would just killing everything by walking around.

It's crazy saying this as someone who actively uses Kiwifarms but these people obsessing over Edmund are way too terminally online it's actually concerning.

I don't think a single one of them have played the game either. Anyone I know who's played it or knows Binding of Isaac is like "Chris Chan is in the game and theres a sonichu medallion? Thats hilarious!"

For my progress: on my way to unlock Act 2, havent done the Boneyards yet. Out of curiousity, once you hit act 2.. is it just an extension of the game (like you do alley->sewers->caves or the alt route every run before it. Or does the game immediately skip you to the first zone of Act 2?

Well, let's see if Ed's stolen another 4,000 hours of my life or not.

Update:
There is an effeminate male character called "Tink" who constantly flirts with your character.
Tink is married to a woman.
I'm hoping this is an old school gay joke, similar to Mr Slave in south park. If so, it's pretty funny.
You do give tink young kittens

Oh there's so many funny ones, but I think my absolute favorite of them all was the Utimate Laser of Terror and Destruction:

It was a Mage cat who had Ephinany+, Mega Blast+ and Peace Symbol Face Paint. So she pretty much could kill every single enemy on screen on round 1 by casting Mega Blast TWICE with the +20 starting mana, and I didn't need to worry about putting my allies in front cuz of the face paint.

All of my Boneyard encounters legitamely felt like this

Someone made a video of them fighting a boss, gaining infinite turns due to some shenanigans that I don't understand

Speaking of Synergies, I just got this one, and it's hilarious. My sticks were dealing 18 damage

Don't bother; the game gives you little choice or opportunity to synergize; you might roll 2 good spells and a third trashy one.

The way I do it is pick a good ability, then try to pick ones that synergize. Some abilities are better than synergies. Why give your ranger's flea familiars 4 hp and poison/bleed when you could let your ranger attack anyone adjacent to allies.
This may be a hot take, but honestly, I am not having fun.

Breeding seems completely random. I have a feeling this gets better and more controllable with metaprogression. But hey, maybe don't lock an advertised core feature of the game behind a jillion hours of grinding. Just a thought.

The sense of metaprogression is... bad. It's basically just that if you throw enough cats in the recycling tanks, then EVENTUALLY you'll unlock something that might help you.

And I have had MULTIPLE runs where I felt like I did everything right and still... well, if not lost, have to go back home prematurely. One bad roll can dick over your entire run. If you lose Isaac, you start another run. If you lose Mewgenics, you not only wasted however the run took, but you just ate a chunk of meta-regression that will take 2 or 3 good runs to claw your way back from.

One thing I greatly dislike in games like this is "tax" choices. That is, options which appear to be up to player choice, but where some of options are so blatantly better than the others they might as well be mandatory. That's Tank and Cleric. For a game that was 13 years in development, class balance is HILARIOUSLY bad from what I've tried so far.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't think I'm willing to grind a game for 20 hours on the vague promise that it might get fun eventually.
Yea that's why I modded my game to make metaprigression faster.

The classes differ so much it's crazy. You can either win a run with "attack everyone adjecent to allies" or get something completely useless that doesn't synergize with anything ever like "your attacks make bramble or glass"

The runs I've lost are purely because I started with shitty passives/abilities, like no cleanse and damaging spells vs spider boss.

Watching people be filtered by content that would be considered tame by early 2000's Newgrounds is endlessly entertaining. The game is like a good stock, it pays dividends

Just had a run where I used the recruiting device the scientist gives you on a daddy shark. The next boss round, I made sure the boss was adjacent to the shark and sure enough, it insta-kills it as well.
I fucking love this game.

Is there a reason to take collarless cats? Also I can't quite tell if my bred cats are actually worth anything or not.

Collarless cats are jack of all trades. They can only get collarless abilities but don't have negative or positive stats. There are also items that interact with collarless as well.

Tink gives you the ability to breed your cats better after you give him 10 kittens

His upgrades are in order

Upgrade 0 (Cost: 1 Kitten) – You will get a Fancy Bow, a one-time use item you can place on a cat during battle.

Upgrade 1 (Cost: 10 Kittens) – It will unlock Base Stats and Bonus Stats on the cat, helping you understand which traits can be passed down and how strong they can become.

Upgrade 2 (Cost: 10 Kittens) – It lets you check a cat’s ancestry to see if it is inbred, which can affect the health of future kittens.

Upgrade 3 (Cost: 10 Kittens) – It reveals a cat’s orientation and libido level, making it easier to choose the right breeding pairs.

Upgrade 4 (Cost: 10 Kittens) – It allows you to assign shapes to your cats so you can organise and identify them more easily.

Upgrade 5 (Cost: 10 Kittens) – It shows a cat’s aggression level, helping you know if they might fight at night.

Upgrade 6 (Cost: 10 Kittens) – It adds love and hate icons to cat profiles, so you can see how they feel about other cats before pairing them.

Act 2 in general feels like a nightmare most of the time, specially the bunker like you said. I feel the Crater is an easier path to deal with because enemies don't have a billion turns and HP, haven't went to the third areas of Act 2 yet so idk how bad they can be.
I tried Crater. Twice the size was something. IMO much more annoying than hard. I was peeved that the amoebas cursed my tinkerer so he could no longer craft a full set of armor. Final boss seemed pretty easy if you remember the patterns, though can certainly be annoying with summons (as I found out).

Did lose my cleric to necronomicon zombies, RIP. Even more poetic since the cleric was the one holding it.

Bodyguard with summons gives your tank a ton of attacks. I think I got mindstone (discount colorless spells by 2) and ace of spades (copy 1/2 cost spells). Let me cast the +1 speed a whole lot. Haven't been able to get Necromancer with that play dead ability, though I've seen it on plenty cats with bad stats.

I did get a Tinkerer with a cheap spell (+1 random stat for 2 mana) and the ability that buffs your weapon when you cast a spell. Had to rely on Tinkerer RNG for the weapon which normally went well enough.
