Mike Judge and Comedy Central are "reimagining" Beavis and Butt-Head for Gen Z

Here's a random question that popped into my head.

I wonder if Mike Judge is totally unknown in Japan or not?

I know South Park airs in Japan and has a cult following, but I can definitely see Mike Judge's cartoons being especially hard to translate, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they're unknown basically everywhere outside the US.

It's definitely notable that Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy aired all the time on European channels, but King of the Hill is the type of show you only catch airing at 2am

King of the Hill has a following in Japan from what I can recall, not sure about Beavis & Butthead though.

It actually makes sense why King of the Hill would have a cult following in Japan, since it's about as close as any American cartoon sitcom has ever gotten to a "Slice of Life" anime as opposed to the zany shock humor that most American cartoon sitcoms go for.

Beavis and Butthead in Virtual Stupidity got a PS1 port exclusive to Japan, while America only got it for PC.

The voice acting is terrible, and you don't even need to know Japanese to recognize it:

Beavis and Butthead was definitely a product of it's time. Even when Judge brought it back for season 8 it just didn't feel the same at all. The parts where they'd sit there and watch 16 and Pregnant or Jersey Shore were a pale imitation of the bygone days when they'd watch music videos. I guess it makes sense because MTV now shows the same trash reality TV garbage that every other mindless channel does these days. Unfortunately they couldn't directly shit talk MTV's new programming, so they had to shit talk something similar.
I just can't imagine Beavis and Butthead ever being the same, or even anywhere nearly as good, in this day and age. Almost every joke would be deemed offensive to someone and the show would have to be neutered so badly as to be unrecognizable.

And I swear to god if we see Beavis or Butthead using a smartphone or some shit I'm going full Cornholio on these assmunchers.

I can think of two ways a Beavis and Butthead revival can work in 2020, and even those probably wouldn't be very good.

-One of those low budget shows like "Fail Army" where Beavis and Butthead do commentary over stupid youtube videos with new music videos from youtube mixed in.

-They're 40-year-old dregs of society who collect cans from people's curbside recycling to get by, the inexplicably still live in the same house and besides that everything is the same. Basically this guy:

And they still just commentate on things happening around them, but they're unpersons that people ignore because they are smelly dishelved can collectors, so they can still say whatever they want.

Beavis and Butthead getting me too'd for hitting on classmates will not work.

After the disaster that was the Futurama revival on CC I have zero faith in this.

I agree with you re. the CC era of Futurama sucking big balls. Everybody else seems to love it, but I always found the characters unlikable (with a few exceptions), and the episodes very howdoyoudofellowkids etc

Fucking seriously! Everyone else I talk with seemed to love the CC episodes, and aside from maybe three or four of them, I found them boring and unfunny. Should have ended at season 4. The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings was a great series finale I thought.

On topic: Wonder if they'll keep coach Buzzcut and Mr. Van Dreissen the same or try and use them as political strawmen. Hope not.

The fan community on the Internet was fighting to get Futurama back for fucking years, so when they did and it kind of sucked I think it was just a tough pill for everyone to swallow.

This is literally the first time I've ever heard anyone make any distinction between the Fox and Comedy Central Futurama episodes. Always felt like the same show to me, but I was still a kid during the Comedy Central run so maybe I was too naive and dumb to notice.

The first four seasons are lionized because it got cancelled and everyone flipped the fuck out. I haven't gone back to watch them in years. I'm too scared I'll dislike them now.

The first four did a good job of of playing off Star Trek TOS tropes and that's what a lot of people liked about it. Flexo is the evil Bender and has a goatee like evil Spock. Fry was always supposed to go back in time and be his own grandfather just like Kirk was always supposed to stop McCoy from saving Edith. Even the idea of the ship randomly delivering one package at a time was Star Trekish because half of the episodes in TOS just start off with the Enterprise doing random errands.

I think my virginity just grew back.

Yeah, you're literally one of the only people I've encountered who thinks the CC episodes were worse than the original run. I thought the first couple movies were ok, the later 2 weren't great (don't know why everybody loves Bender's Game so much -- I never saw LOTR or played D&D, so IDK). The later years are almost a completely different show - I did enjoy The Late Philip J. Fry, but some of the episodes were almost Zombie Simpsons-tier bad (V-Giny? Fucking seriously??). And this sounds petty but honestly it bugged me that Fry had heard of the fucking Kardashians - he was frozen in 1999, Orange Joe doesn't even know the outcome of the 2000 election, much less about 2010s celebrities! I guess you could argue theyre heads in jars with their own show but it just seemed to scream 'see? we're hip here at Futurama!'
