One thing that I like a lot more in the older versions is the terrain generation, being a lot more fantastical and not realistic, it made the game look better and exploration more fun imo.
I especially found Infdev's terrain gen to be great (aside from the initial really basic ones), taking these screenshots using the Modern Beta mod to get the world gen of Infdev 20100415, the only downside is that it hasn't been updated to include all the new biomes so it's just forests.
