Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

I really wish there was a Nitter UI for plemora / mastodon which also allowed posting with Javascript off.
Sucks when a site only works with JavaScript. Isn't it more expensive to run a JS-only site anyway?

It's much cheaper and easier to develop with Javascript which is why fediverse stuff is drowning in it. Well except for GNU Social.. but that has other problems.

Its completely busted, and not just for globohomo content, I don't see the point of youtube having these "features" if they don't fucking work.

This channel keeps being recommended and showing up in my feed even though I've clicked "don't recommend" and "not interested" like 4 or 5 times now.

For all I know its a decent channel but it just looks like some zoomer soyboy talking about PS1 games and I could not give less of a shit.

Random question: Do you have any of these settings enabled here? Or have any reason to keep track of watch history? https://www.youtube.com/feed/history

For private browsing I immediately pause/clear everything, and for non-private I have watch history paused and search history paused/cleared and I feel like I never get any random crap.

I leave watch history on simply because its in some scenarios, i've previously watched something and want to go back and watch it again or reference it, the problem being ive forgotten the name of the video, so i can check in the history and go back to roughly when i watched it and go from there. I never refer back to search history so i have that disabled.

Maybe they're paying Youtube to get it bumped? They're not going to let you choose "not interested" in paid advertisements.

edit I know someone that spends a hundo to get a video pushed on youtube every now and then and it is not this guy:

Never heard of the channel, five views.

Is that really the algorithm or is it the algo-get-my-credit-card-rithm?

How certain platforms (linkedin, rocketreach, etc) now limit you from searching/browsing people. Like it simply will not display search results.

Might not notice if you're a pleb who only searches for one person. But if you're trying to find non-specific people, you're fucked.

It's more of a privacy vs convenience thing. Those places used to be very easy to scrape.

over the years i have grown to have a nearly unhealthy hatred for algorithms and AIs used for social media and content
i don't want to see a completely unrelated blue checkmark twitter thread in the middle of a conversation, i don't want to see the most liked comments first under a youtube video or an article, i don't want my feed to show me posts from 6 days ago next to ones from a hour ago and most of all i don't want to get my recommended bar full of unrelated videos i already watched, fucking stop it

wow

604 and a few seconds later 612 blocked ad crap on a YT vid.

How can anyone support browsing without ad blockers anyways?

This shit is super annoying. What the fuck is the point of youtube peppering your homepage/recommended page with videos you already watched? I could maybe understand if its something you watched years ago, like maybe the history was wiped and the algorithm is being dumb, but it will do it for videos you watched not even a couple of days ago.

Nope, the algorithms work fine.

It's when they force in ads and 'trendy content' when it all goes wrong.

You can look at the sorry state of reddit. If you search something, most posts will be on point, but every 3rd or so will be an add, or an unrelated "Reddit Recommends" post that has nothing to do with the convo.

You know what my topical web woe is? Nothing degrades gracefully anymore. Look at how unreadable this forum is when it's only half-loaded and the styles or whatever haven't been completely applied.

The old web used to at least pay lip service to the notion that not everyone might have a top-of-the-line browser with all the bells and whistles - or even graphics.

I'd say Sneedforo should have Lynx-friendliness as a UI design goal, but I don't know if that's even possible anymore.

I've been blocking JS by default for years now and in my experience, sites that don't work without JS even though they don't really need it aren't worth visiting most of the time. It's gotten better than the days of "This page was designed for Internet Explorer 6" if you ask me. If KF wasn't currently being ddosed to hell, you could use it without JS too, at least if you don't care about handing out funny stickers other than Like.

Designing for CSS-less browsers is a bit of a pain because you have to set up the HTML accordingly, but if you reduced clutter like the avatar/name box a bit, something basic like a forum could definitely be done. JSchan is perfectly usable on Lynx for instance when captcha is disabled.
