Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

they know it's not very good but your interactions with the results are free training for the neural network.
Facebook are no longer doing facial recognition because of "lack of regulation" but are not destroying their DeepFace model trained on billion of users' photos.

Now that their model is way ahead of everyone elses they are pulling the drawbridge up and crying "regulation" if anyone else tried what they did. Sickening if it wasn't so predictable.

Get with the times old man, it's The Current Year™©®! It's "pfp" now.
I hate newspeak so fucking much.

Also can we talk about how Google Image Search went to shit when galaxybrains at Jewgle decided to replace all the tech that just worked with neural networks, because it's the hot new shit these days?
How it used to be:
"Here's places where that image has been posted and, from what I can infer about it from the contents of those pages, is that it's a screenshot of a street from <this movie>."
What you get now:
"Neural network has identified that image as "Street", so here are pictures of streets with the same color palette as that image."
I've heard that people used it to look up people on tinder/grindr and things like that to find out if they were being catfished. It was claimed that it made google nervous because they had inadvertently created a pretty decent, free and fast face identification system. So they lobotomized the thing.

No clue if there's any truth to it but to me it sounds plausible.

Yandex is still good but it seems to have been getting worse, I don't know if it's just me or what.

I got a legitimate youtube mandated trigger warning on a video lmao

I'm logged in on my account so I'm allowed to watch big boy videos but it was still blocked because the video had "offensive suicide" content and wouldn't play until you press confirm to watch. The offensive content? This is a true crime video and the murderer mentioned being suicidal as an excuse for murder in the interrogation. Like at most 20 seconds of a 30 minute video.

Youtube treating its users like fucking braindead idiots like usual. This and the dislike button stuff really are driving the site down the shitter. Unfortunately they are basically a de facto monopoly and can continue to do stupid shit and you are fucked if you want to watch independent online videos.

I'm not embedding it because the dumbest trigger warning in history might not show up.

Its probably been mentioned before but covid shit on youtube is really annoying. I'm talking about the youtube mandated stuff on the home page where they push approved coof videos and info at you.

I really really don't fucking care but no matter how many times I click "not interested" and "don't show me this" they keep shoving this shit in my face. I go to youtube for entertainment, not to be preached at about wearing masks or whatever. I don't even watch any covid related shit, I just want to be left alone and watch my vidya and true crime videos. Why are you even giving me the option to click "don't show me this" if you are just going to ignore it?

There's a dedicated bar on the front page you can't opt out of for "covid 19 news" thats less news and more sensationalized fearmongering masked as news or talking heads calling people thinking about the vaccines side affects "anti-vaxxers" for not just immediately getting the jab When adblock is disabled you WILL see like one or 2 commercials funded by various US state governments or companies solely talking about COVID 19 Vaccines, some of them are fucking poes law parody level of blatant propaganda. like this one I finally fucking tracked down I've got a variant of very once and a while but been able to find because of how deceptively generic the fucking thing is titled. I posted it in the corona thread in case you're interested cause it's really unintentionally funny.

They never listen to those 'not interested' clicks anymore. It used to be you would eventually wear the algorithm down and never get any recommendations (and then have a nice blank homepage with nothing but your subscriptions) but eventually YT came up with a million different gay subcategories so you will always get covid, clickbait, consoom product and political propaganda in your feed no matter how many times you click not interested in YT faggotry.

It's kind of annoying seeing "MrBeast" videos show up all the time in "related" videos.

I've never watched any of them and I don't know who he is, yet they're still constantly suggested.
That and all the videos I see get advertised just feel like a cash flex. "I do X with Millions of Y." Okay dude, I get it, you're YouTube rich, why keep broadcasting it unless you're asking to get mugged.

heres a fun little tip for you, assuming you use a chromium based browser

get the blocktube extension
use it to block mrbeast videos
profit

Seconding the blocktube extension. Being able to block specific channels is a godsend. Youtube still technically sends the preview blurb and thumbnail, but the extension prevents them from being displayed and annoying you. It's delightful, and a must-have (along with ublock origin or similar ad blocking) for dealing with Youtube in any fashion. It's insufferable without them.

I use privacy frontends like Teddit, Invidious, and Nitter to view content without [Modern Webshits], however those sites hate the idea of less than 0.1% of all traffic to their sites coming from a privacy frontend so they often rate limit them. Also to quote a friend of mine: "take the chance to use [Non-Chromium Based Web Browser] and see how many sites break from Googleisms". If you choose to use anything that is not Chromium based or Firefox many sites break to varying extents.

Oh god this. I just want all the horrible kids' toy channels and cgi baby nursery rhyme videos to go away they pop up in the recommended section every damn time.

I remember as a kid seeing the internet as a fun place for other geeks who were into manga and anime could hang out and be ourselves. Now if you be yourself on a fansite you have to be yourself in the "approved" way of being yourself or otherwise you're not welcome. It grinds my gears a lot.
Susan Wojakjikicki's demonetisation plans would never have caused as much of a shitstorm in 2010 as it did in 2016, I always felt. Interestingly that came about not too long (~1 year) after the co founder of Google divorced her sister.

IMO it all tore itself apart when the 13 year old Tumblrfucks came in and moped around screaming about how the US would become Trumpistan, and then not long after Discord not only popularised geek/nerd culture but centralised most of the dedicated sites away from forums and such into it. A couple years later Tumblr spilled into Twitter after the porn ban and bam, innocent normies started seeing weeb shit and furry shit everywhere and the culture became normalised to the point of insanity. (Put two weirdo groups together and have Twitter recommend one another, then have TikTok latch onto it, and then you get the ultimate rat king culture, I suppose.)

I really miss the days before 2016. Every year felt different until then, now every year feels like a continuation of the same shit one.
