Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I tried watching Youtube without Adblocker (on mobile) and it's literally unwatchable.

The video gets interrupted mid sentence/mid action for not one, but TWO 15 seconds unskippable ads. That is, ON TOP of the 30 mins unskippable ads when opening a new video.

It really feels like the web has been experiencing deaths by 1000 cuts, and removing adblock jumps me from 0 cuts to 700 cuts.
I work with fume hoods with the little gloves. 15 seconds I can stand but the moment google realized if they make you look at the screen to hit skip they win it became unusable

Thankfully dear sneeders shilling of brave solved that issue.

Didn't YouTube originally start with limits of 10 minutes and 480p resolution? Why jump straight to compete with what they can do now instead of starting smaller?
5 minutes and 240p iirc. The original "youtube premium" was paying for the ability to upload videos longer than five minutes. I think it extended it to 12 minutes or something.

I remember being it in 10 minutes. In the mid to late 2000s it was popular to cut up TV shows into 3 videos (or movies into 8-10 parts, though they tended to be more obscure B-movies, not the latest blockbusters). This is how Viacom started to bitch about it leading to its ultimate purchase by Google.

Yesterday India landed a craft on the moon's Southern polar region. To me this is very cool. I wanted to see footage of it so I typed some likely search strings into YouTube. Then Bing, Google... ALL that I could find was commentary on it or badly edited clips with raucous music stomped all over it. Literally all I want was to watch camera footage of the vessel. I can find nothing but people reposting stuff around it with the same informationless commentaries talking over them.

Commentary, reaction, how to think, feel this, feel that, here are your soundbites. Pages of the stuff. Literally could not find just simple on-board video of the landing.

One can no longer find events, only how to feel and what to think using an event as a device to reach you.

Modern news sites are so ad heavy and tracker heavy they weigh more on your PC resources than some older games it's so fucking insane. When using a weaker computer like the ones at my job they would honestly freeze while loading some sites like DailyMail or MSNBC. There is just SO MUCH GARBAGE on the screen it makes it easier to open the archive then their actual links.

Welp, Youtube has just removed the ability to "temporarily hide" the Shorts shelf and shoves them in your face when you're checking your subscriptions. Boy, I love having to install yet another browser plugin because Youtube keeps doing stupid fucking bullshit.

YouTube keeps getting worse and worse. One baffling change that effects all video sites is that the video will be blurry, unless I hover the mouse over the seek bar, then the video returns to normal. I don't understand why this is a thing or how to fix it, but I assume it's a browser setting.

Another peeve of searches (one that I came to complain about) is that if I'm searching for a video. For sake of argument, let's say an autistic train game, The top results will be black "influencers" who are utterly unwatchable playing something unrelated to my search like Minecraft or Fortnite. Scroll past them and I get a "for you" section containing a bunch of results completely unrelated to my search. ie. The recommended bar again. Then random shorts and other bullshit before finally getting a few results of the train game I wanted interrupted by either "shorts" or "for you".

I know there's an extension to block the mainstream news results. But is there anything to block the promoted "influencers" clogging up the results.

(Also, that landing sounds cool. Send a link of the landing if you find one.)

Fuck google for removing the ability to disable auto-play of videos. Nothing better than reading the first paragraph a news article then some bullshit news anchor starts shouting in the corner of the browser.

The inability to disable auto-play is especially picante on mobile.
get an autoplay stopping extension on your browser and get a mobile browser that supports extensions to get that same autoplay stopper

An option to block this shit on the homepage was finally added to youtube revanced a little while back. Doesn't solve them showing up in search but it's better than having no protection.

Having to get extensions for every simple thing is a modern web woe though. Disabling auto-play USED to be in Chrome but they removed it.

Fuck every single site that doesn't respect dark mode.

Go to install Tampermonkey since I forgot until now and, for some fucking reason, Mozzarella still refuses to allow their store to use dark mode.

Most modern browsers have an option to disable autoplay in the Privacy and Security settings. For Firefox, you need to go into the about: config and set media.autoplay.blocking_policy = 2. Feel free to make the the following changes, too.
  • media.autoplay.default = 5
  • media.autoplay.allow-extension-background-pages = false
  • media.autoplay.block-event.enabled = true
  • media.autoplay.enabled.user-gestures-needed = false
  • media.autoplay.enabled.user-gestures-needed =true
Chromium-cringed browsers shouldn't need further tweaking.

Seems like JewTube finally readded the ability to hide the fucking shelf on the home page, but still forces them in the subscriptions because "you vill watch zee Shorts".

Twitch in general is just AIDS; I thought the new adblock shit on YouTube is bad but Twitch takes the cake with what you have to do to get rid of the intrusive ads. The Twitch vs. Adblocker arms race has developed to the point where Twitch, if it wants to, will cut your stream out and force up to TWELVE of those shitty 15 second ads, which WILL play at whatever-the-fuck resolution they want, and they can and WILL play whenever you tune into a stream while actual gameplay is happening. I read that streamers can manually set ad breaks that will cause them to play during downtime, but this doesn't help for end users that want to tune in and see what's happening, only to get two minutes of shitty mumble rap and retarded L*berty M*tual faggotry. Not even 24/7 streams like FFTBattleground or SaltyBet are safe from this, so you have to just deal with ads popping up all the time. You can still avoid Twitch ads, but you need an addon like ttvlolpro that lets you start playback through a proxy server, which tricks Twitch into disabling ads as it thinks you're in Australia or whichever countries work.

Oh yeah, and the entire reason I even made this post was because I was suddenly pushed an update to a Twitch addon called "Automatic Twitch: Drops, Moments and Points", which is mainly used to automate Twitch's shitty drop system. TL;DR, main dev went full Hebraic and forced adware into xeir program, then wrote a copepost rationalizing the decision and basically saying "ummmmm this isn't that bad, you know I can just sell your browsing information or just give you malware instead (IM-FUCKING-PLYING THAT ADWARE ISN'T MALWARE. IM-FUCKING-PLYING THAT THESE POPUPS FOR RANDOM SITES WILL NEVER RAPE YOUR COMPUTER)". Guess I'm using BTTV for the next time I want some Payday 2 items.

In the apparent quest of endlessly getting worse, seems YT may have made new BS: playing an audio ad on a channel video listing.

(I got this audio ad playing that advertised something about some internet company.)

update:

Another audio ad: you know how you can play a video in a playlist in a small picture-in-picture, while looking at the playlist?

Just had such a video go black with an audio ad for some other internet thing play. Then a little popup notice pushing Premium.

YouTube search sucks I remember trying to watch Jared Taylor videos, and it was such a pain. All it would show is mainstream media BS, and the top result is literally a news organization that Google tags as owned by China, but yet they push this trash despite it getting little views and massive dsilikes. They also, for some retarded reason, do not use the transcipt only title and description, so there are tons of videos that mention things I am into. that I will never find searching for that thing I am into HATE SUSAN I HATE HER PAJEET REPLACEMENT TOTAL YOUTUE DEATH

To me this is very cool.
"Chandrayaan-3 landing - Onboard camera view" - SciNews

(Best no commentary video I could find for now, after looking up the name of the probe first.)

websites that prevent me from highlighting text
Doing View --> Page Style --> No Style (or the like) may bypass that BS. Or turning off JavaScript.

Thank you so much - I really enjoyed that. The lack of sound just made it better, contemplative even. SO much better than rapid changing shots of control rooms and presenters and views of the take-off and commentators jabbering with forced excitement over it all. Just watching the moon silently roll by below and knowing what it means.

It's strange how smooth the moon looks outside of the craters. It looks like yeast when it's bubbling when you start mixing it into the flour.

Again, thank you - I watched the whole thing. It's awes me that over 200,000 miles away there's a little speck of human technology sitting there on another rock in space, quietly transmitting to us. Humans are cool sometimes.

The way you describe that "forced excitement" thing sounds like something out of Fahrenheit 451.

(also glad you enjoyed the actual footage itself)
