Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
More and more sites with articles do that "sample" BS, where part of an article is there but one must pay or subscribe to read the rest. Never saw that before Current Year.
You click on a link and the link is clearly the name of an article. But instead the link takes you to some landing page, or advertisements, or a slideshow of 20 different smaller articles broken up to force more clicking and user engagement. Imagine purchasing a movie on Bluray it's broken up into four different discs despite not being necessary at all. Why do it then? So that they could charge you more money.

If I click on a link that says "Top 20 Dreamcast Games of All Time". I expect an article featuring 20 games. Not a slideshow where I need to click an additional 25 times. Or a partial article where the rest is buried in dozens of javascript barriers. It's just more false and misleading clickbait lies.

I am really starting to loathe the way every short clip has what the person is saying plastered with in-video subtitles. It is distracting, I don't need it and it pulls away from watching the actual video itself.

Annoying. And I'm fairly sure that the mp4 standard can include subtitles for those as want them.

i remember using spaywall to get around it, not sure about its modern viability

The plain HTML version of GMail is gone, replaced with the JavaScript-heavy, clunkier, slower new version that feels soy or hipster.

Also in an email there's avatars and suggested responses to select.* I want plain text in plain HTML back, not "smartphoneish" crap.

*(stuff like "Sounds great!" or "Okay, see you there.")

Not enough ad tracking in the pure HTML version.
I guess maybe it's time to finally switch. Sigh. I hate dealing with email.

Why Google shut down plain HTML got a lot clearer, and is likely the same reason YT is going after ad blockers.

(they want more ad revenue?)
You can still get IMAP access, so long as you sign in with their SSO system. I'm using it in thunderbird right now. This makes me believe the real reason for shutting down plain HTML is that they just don't want to maintain it.

I bust out Mutt when I need to delete all the unread messages I don't care about, so much faster than the web version.

New annoyance: web articles that have a "subscribe plz?" popup that takes over the entire browser window as you're scrolling.

Google keeps finding new ways to get worse.
I've been doing pretty well so far with the following flowchart:
1. Run AdBlock and Javascript.
2. If it bitches about your AdBlock, try your browser's reader mode.
3. If that doesn't work either or you get paywalled, send the article to archive.today
4. If that doesn't work, it's usually not worth reading anyway.

Ai generated blog trash is the worst. Every time I look for an answer for some obscure thing I need to troubleshoot I come accross pages of pajeets and their ai slop
It's also the fault of the search engines in that they are trash now and always direct people to A.I. generated and click farm sites instead of actual user generated posts and forums that you are looking for. And with nearly all major search engines forcing infinite scroll on users you no longer get access to the best and most accurate results without endlessly scrolling. The term 'search engine' should be considered false advertising at this point and the government should force them to be renamed as nothing but "advertising platform engines".

It used to be you searched for something and the first results were exactly what you wanted. Now you search for something and the results are literally the exact opposite of what you want yet are labeled as "what you want" so you click on them anyways. And even worse is that what are you are actually looking for is buried beneath an infinite amount of content designed to dump relevant results to the lowest search levels so that trash is promoted to the top.

Social media is designed like this as well. Unfiltered commercial spam and unmoderated garbage rising to the top masquerading as authentic user generated content that is relevant.

Isn't that always crap like "here's how this works" as if you've never heard of the subject?
They tend to write like that because so much of their training data is from pajeets, who as you have probably noticed, if you spend enough time listening to them, talk exactly like that all the time.
