Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
web designers are lazy and actually do take features away from mobile sites so that they have less stuff to fit into their layout
Why is it that India seemingly suddenly became so influential on the internet, in IT, and those endless scam calls in Current Year? 🤔

First there was this underdeveloped country of around 1 billion people, yet they had no significant influence over IT or the 'net in the West. Then in Current Year, India is still underdeveloped, but you now see "in hindi" in Google autocomplete, there is daily Indian scam calls to every phone, and there are many from India in IT and web design.

30 years of outsourcing and diploma mills, coupled with two thirds of the country all getting online within a period of two or three years around 2015.

Oh, geez, idk - have you seen the C-suites lists for major IT corps lately? I wonder how all those MBAs achieved cost cuts to get into those positions.

The “Notifications” icon on social media sites are worthless. You see the red dot and click on it and it’s almost always a notification for something you absolutely do not give a shit about, or is just spam, or is something “suggested” that has nothing to do with you. Those notifications used to actually be something specifically for you. Yes you can turn them off but it’s just another sign of how much slop these sites produce to keep you clicking on things and looking at shit

Why can't there be a single solution to end it once and for all?
The users' interests do not align with corporations, whose only objective is market acquisition, shoehorning cancer to the detriment of the average person and most importantly potential profit and control in the future. Google is the de facto ruler of chromium and they can do anything they want with it, and they've been taking advantage of that between Manifest v3 (most popular and recent case, but replacement APIs will come soon, pinky promise (7 years ago)), Web Environment Integrity (very close call, it'll come back), WebUSB, whitelisting Google domains, DRMs, new standards because they need them for their dedicated hardware nobody else cares about, and so on, you could go on for hours. The only limit is how much push-back they get from other companies about their deranged proposals (constantly on the edge of what's tolerable), while they constantly break or make up cancerous, curry and soy infused specs expecting everyone else (<20% browser share, but really closer to single-digit) to follow them, otherwise no more YouTube, Docs and all that for you! Don't forget they had the money to force Chrome into every normalfag's throat bundling it with installers and literal malware because distributors would get paid a pretty penny for every installation they'd just steal all the data from later. Microsoft would do that with IE and now worse than ever with Edge, similarly cramming all sorts of anti-features into it. Even if there's a company that seems to be on your side, nothing stops it from going the way of Mozilla, and it's exceptionally unlikely without a primary business they'd be able to stay relevant without depending on their enemies. The "user-friendly" alternative will always be the underdog, and a non-profit, government-mandated """consortium""" ran by corporations wouldn't change that either, if anything it may be even worse than the current state we're in.

I wish browser wars were as innocent as they were 20 years ago.

I got baited so many times by fake app notifications I just turned them all off, now the only time my phone makes noises is when I get a phone call. It's nice being able to check and deal with the information on my own time and at my discretion.

People know to call me if it's urgent, because 9/10 times a notification is not urgent. It feels like the internet forces FOMO onto you now.

Bush Jr opened up a lot of trade agreements with them in the 2000s

Long as shit text block, long story short auto moderation has been especially dogshit recently and facebook's should genuinely be illegal.

I don't know if it's just me. Maybe it is, maybe I'm a targeted individual and should start counting red cars and bird chips. But I've noticed the auto moderation on sites is especially dogshit recently. I don't know if it's from some places switching over to some sort of chatgpt type AI instead of whatever they used before and having teething problems. But there's something off recently. I got my 100th reddit account banned a few weeks ago for what any reasonable human would recognise as a joke (even redditors) but the bots decided actually it was a serious threat that needed banning, this was not some reddit janny but the automated systems that did it. I remember years ago when I was a child and still actively used that shithole saying much worse and it never getting flagged. Is n=1 retarded? Yes. I do not have another fucking account to try again with though. Honestly I don't have any intention of using the site again, said it in the reddit thread and I'll say it again, chatgpt is in every single way a better version of reddit. Most of the niche subs aren't funny anymore and the large ones never were, so not exactly going to use the site for humour. Only thing it was ever good for is asking niche questions, chatgpt can answer those same questions much better and in a fraction of the time and will actually listen to what you say. In the past few months I have asked 3 questions on reddit, without fail the first reply on each of them has been asking/telling me something that the post itself answers while being a smug cunt about it. Out of those three questions not one response on any of them got an actual answer. One of them ended up in some redditor telling me I'm a terrible person and retarded and all that because she didn't bother to read and understand the thing I fucking wrote and thought I was doing something completely different. Facebook has been exceptionally shit recently though, I've had almost 10 posts/comments removed for all manner of bullshit over the past couple months, without fail they have all been reinstated maybe 5-10 minutes at most after requesting a review. Aside from the most recent one, few days ago I posted an image in the comments of a friends post, took what she was talking about slapped it in an ai as a joke. Facebook in it's all mighty wisdom has fucking marked the image that contained no real people, no children/child characters and was not sexual as fucking child porn and has taken several days yet still it is 'in review'. Thank you facebook for putting my name on some fucking federal watchlist because your bots are retarded. I just want to know, why the fuck is there not a human in that process anywhere? Why can the largest social media site not implement some sort of human checking before it sets off the flags? Why does the robot have to accuse me of posting illegal material, ban my account and probably get me on some watchlist all before it involves a human? Idk I just think that maybe something that serious shouldn't rely on an automated system maybe? (other than the fingerprint hash system obviously). I've used this site for a long time, years and years ago I used to have shitposting accounts, even back then everyone knew the bots would flag everything for no reason. Everyone knows their auto moderation is dogshit. So why is there no human there to check what the bot is saying before it accuses me of literal crimes? Everyone just requests a review after getting something deleted anyway, so why the fuck don't you put the human reviewer before the ban instead of after? Really glad about that, not like I live in a country where standing on a public path can be illegal if you're in the wrong place and are the wrong type of person haha, not like just saying statistics and objectively true facts is classed as a hate crime or anything, real fucking glad to have my name thrown in with the 'maybe search this guy's harddrives' people in a country where everyone has illegal hate crimes on their harddrives according to the government all over a retarded robot hallucinating naked children. Thank fuck I don't work as a teacher or something like that considering even just the accusation could fuck over your entire life. Oh yea also notifications have been broken for about a month now too and do not actually notify me of pretty much everything you would want to be notified about. After looking around it seems that a lot of people are also being falsely accused of posting csam too. All I will say is that I hope every single false report goes to the fbi or whatever glowwy cunt organisation and they get as pissed off at false flags as I do but slap facebook into maybe not going around marking random people as child rapists with no proof? Normally I'd take what they say with a grain of salt but after having it happen to myself several times over the past few months I believe everything these redditors are saying. One guy says he got banned for selling drugs over a picture of a guitar, one guy got banned for impersonating himself, one person claims to be some old woman who never posts anything and still got hit with the false csam brand, one guy got the csam brand for posting an image of a gundam. 1.5 trillion usd valuation company btw. Short of just waiting even longer and fucking hope that I will be allowed to talk to my friends and family again I stuck a complaint in with trading standards, not much else I can do as far as I'm aware. I'd definitely report it to that FTC thing featured earlier if I lived in America. I hope for total lizard death.

That's midwits for you.

Thread-relevant drama that will matter to maybe five of you (plus me): KnowYourMeme is experiencing a mass exodus of users because a shitty redesign they've been trialing for the past year is now going to completely replace the old (but perfectly functional) UI while also eliminating the option to go back.

So, why is everyone ass-mad about this new UI? Well, it simply doesn't work, and was pushed onto the userbase with zero feedback.
  • Upvoting no longer works.
  • Comments often don't show up.
  • Going to a new page in a gallery causes a 500 error about half the time.
  • Automatically censors "obscene" tags and text, while also removing the ability to sort images by upvotes or downvotes.
  • All of this is wrapped up in a sterile Facebook-style interface that's seemingly designed to maximize advert space.
Leading up to this changeover, the admins had decided the way to convince the userbase to switch over the new UI was to break the old one. Over the past year, the old interface, which worked perfectly fine for over a decade, suddenly started throwing random 500 server errors when changing pages and caused comments to stop showing up. When this didn't work, they decided to simply shout "FUCK IT" and kill the old interface completely.

The site's excuse is "BIG BAD GOOGLE MADE US DO IT OR THEY WOULD CUT OFF OUR TUGBOAT", but I'm pretty sure the goal of the site's owners is to simply turn the stockpile of images saved on it into feedstock they can sell to AI companies, basically profiting off stolen images like Facebook does, userbase not needed. Hence why most of the recent content is simply bot-scraped reddit posts with like zero engagement.

I'll admit that I haven't used the site in over a year now (mainly because of the shitty redesign, but also because of how the community has been dwindling to almost nothing over the last few years), but it still makes me sad to see another remnant of the old Internet disappearing into the ether courtesy of SEO enshittification.

I'm honestly surprised that the site did not enshittify sooner. Even as the pozweb truly set in around the mid-2010s to now, KYM continued to be straightforward and informative.
