What ever happened to just discovering media on your own? What ever happened to just reading about something?
I genuinely love to discover things on my own. It's like creating your own little niche that only you and someone else you tell know about. I think it's just the fact that everyone wants to feel included so everything has to be explained in autistic detail, chewed then spit out into the mouths of retards.

those of us that are completely comfortable spending the bulk of our time online reading text
Could you please shorten your post to two sentences or less? Thanks.
In my opinion this is a form of mental disability.
I think it does depend on how fucked up your public transport UI is. Dutch Railways has a very bold, 52px or so font that you cannot mistake along with all the stations it goes to. I've been to Germany and it's pretty worse overall. I couldn't even imagine how bad the U.S. would be. I don't blame anyone for being unable to read this:

ive played mini metro before. this is nothing

I got a notification at midnight that someone was trying to access my Facebook account, which I haven't touched in about half a decade. I was able to log onto it, but it's using an old e-mail of mine, and it's resisting every attempt to change it to a new one. I keep getting told "You can't make this change at this moment. This is because you are using a device you do not usually use and we have to keep your account safe. You can make this change after using it for a while". Problem is, "a while" seems to be anywhere from a week to a month, which is overkill when I just want to delete it. Should have done it much sooner, but hindsight.

In the past, it was a treat to be on the Internet. It felt like you went somewhere each time you sat down, dialed-up, and connected. It did suck in many ways; it was, I imagine, like diving in those ancient, bulky metallic suits. Heavy, slow, abysmal view. And yet, at the bottom, looking through that crappy tiny window, you could feel excitement and wonder. Where will I go now? What will I do? Who will I e-mail?
This (and the next passage I quoted) best summarize my own feelings about the internet. In the early days, it was fun to see what was on it and wander aimlessly online down the various rabbit holes. You could be browsing a classmates personal web site one moment and minutes later end up on some random autist's web site praising electric can openers and wonder where you might end up next.

Web browsing was definitely clunky on dial up - especially in the days when 330 - 2400 baud were the norm, but it couldn't kill the curiosity that came with discovering something new any time you were able to connect.
Nowadays the wonder and excitement are long gone. All you can feel is disgust, and your guard must be up.
For me, the novelty is gone and I now find myself surprised and disappointed when information that should be online isn't. As an example, it's frustrating to go to an active organization's web page or social media account and see outdated information when you know the organization is currently active and holding events.

In the mean time, too many spammers, scammers, and grifters now use the internet to find suckers to victimize. Worse, porn and malware always seem to be one typo or expired domain name away.

I got a notification at midnight that someone was trying to access my Facebook account, which I haven't touched in about half a decade. I was able to log onto it, but it's using an old e-mail of mine, and it's resisting every attempt to change it to a new one.
I recently ordered something online and I wanted to update the email address to one I use more frequently now. I can change almost anything in my profile except my email address. So, my only options are to either contact support to see if they can change it on their end, or abandon the account and its order history to create a new account.

Thread tax: Health providers that insist on posting everything online and requiring everyone to set up an online portal account to view the information or pay their bills. This is in spite of something I recently read that claimed the majority of people don't want to create accounts on such portals because of privacy and security concerns with many others only logging in once and never again.

And God forbid you change providers/insurance for whatever reason, then you have to find new everything and sign up for all their shit.

I had someone years ago get into my old Hotmail account and setup a Facebook account. Also have the same problem as you. Can’t log into the account because it doesn’t recognize my account. Still get face notification emails from time to time. My Hotmail account keeps getting locked because I changed password and password hint. And this dude still tries to log into the account. It wants me to provide additional contact information and record a selfie video.

Really wish I could get into the account, post some super racist shit to piss off all his friends list and to piss off Facebook admins.

How do these people exist in a modern society?
Can't speak for that situation specifically, but it has been noted that the world has gradually become more cognitively demanding. That was a compelling part of The Bell Curve, which sadly was made out to be a book about race because it was the first highly popular book to talk about the fact that black Americans have lower IQs than whites, something that was well known among academics who study intelligence. The idea is that the people in the top 10% of cognitive ability (which means an IQ of 120 or higher) have a tendency to rise into positions of authority due to being more effective at their jobs and essentially run the world. They tend to underestimate how difficult it is for people of average intelligence to do some cognitively demanding tasks, much less people of below average intelligence. You actually have to have an IQ of about 90 to be able to read well enough to follow written instructions, which means that if you are below that, you will struggle.

That makes me wonder if those of us that were internet junkies in the '90s and early 2000s were like that just because we can read better than most of the population.

Update: apparently continuously trying to get in on my phone was enough for Facebook to let me get in and change my password. Once I did that I was able to delete it. One less thing to worry about.

GIMP is even worse now. Now it constantly writes who-knows-what to the drive. Like 10 MB just to start it. There's a delay in loading preferences now. Doing anything writes.

edit to add:

I "downgraded" to 2.10 and wow 2.10 is so much better. Definitely so much better. Index color conversion thing is so much better, and colorcube analysis is back. Screw 3.0+.

I FUCKING HATE THIS. I wanted to make an appointment for my doctor. First it was “Call to make an appointment”. NOPE. You filled in your email, you’d better use or shitty fucking web portal. Which, by the way, on dark mode, has white on white text, GOOD. Along with the shitty portal, it requires 2FA, THAT DIDN’T FUCKING WORK FOR WEEKS. So I couldn’t access my results, reacquire medicine or make appointments, good to know that when I need my life-threatening medicine, I could handily get it from the shitty web portal that doesn’t work. — So I go to my general practitioner to make an appointment locally. I sit there for a bit, waiting for the receptionist to call me up (Zero people were waiting in front of me, she just sat there doing fuck all for ten minutes), when I can finally make an appointment, she asks whether I have an account on the dogshit web portal. I reluctantly respond “Yes”. She fucking guides me through the dogshit web portal as if I have fucking dementia and can’t read basic English. (The web portal is defaulted to fucking English instead of the native language, I sure love Americanization!). I came here to make an appointment LOCALLY not on your fucking WEB PORTAL. Now I have to put in a time where I get CALLED BACK to maybe get an appointment or fuck off and get prescribed medicine without a general practitioner even glancing at me. Seven fucking minutes worth of blabbing about because I have symptoms that NEED to be looked at and not just passed off as “Oh I’ll just prescribe you penicillin, be all end all!”. He was calling me in the FUCKING CAR, I could’ve been fucking driving.

Anyway, I hate web portals. I have another one with a different hospital, I can’t even log into it at all for years now.

Hahahaha.

Anyway, is there a reliable website that 100% can confirm that another website is a scam? I know I sound like a boomer, but there's 100 of these services that APPEAR to be, but when I look up a website that I 100% know is a scam, it seems to have 1000 5star reviews (from accounts with 1 review mind you) One time I tried to leave a review of my own on a DEFINITE SCAM and the scammers reported my review as fraudulent and GOT IT REMOVED!!! MIND YOU, this was a LEGITIMATE SCAM WEBSITE with references to Google that LEAD NOWHERE, AND CERTIFICATES THAT HAD NO PROOF. I EVEN WENT DOWN TO LOOK UP THE ADRESS THEY LISTED ON MAPS AND FOUND OUT THAT NOT ONLY DID OTHERS HAVE SIMILAR EXPERIENCE (SOMES EVEN GOT SCAMMED) THEY EVEN SAID THAT THE COMPANY REPORTS LEGITIMATE REVIEWS OF THEIR SHADY BUSINESSES! I'M 100% SURE IT'S SOME AFRICANS OR INDIANS COLLUDING!

Been watching stuff on the History Channel app and I found a neat little trick to skip ads. They give you the option to pick regular owns or an interactive one, so you pick the interactive one (it's a regular ad which let's you select things on the screen after it plays) and then you don't really select anything, you just move the selection box once and then you can select return to content. The thing to select the type of commercial will come up, you can select the regular ads at this point and it will just outright not bother with them and will continue the show. Just do this every time it comes up from that point on. You'll get an occasional ad before the next episode starts though.

I'm only watching on the History app because when I was in the middle of a season on Hulu, it completely got rid of the season plus the next one. It let me select it and was playing the episodes, but once I backed out of the show, the seasons had disappeared.
