Mods/Rom Hacks that fix a game

Key word: decent. There were better Beat 'Em Ups on both systems.
There were so many low-effort SNES Final Fight clones that it basically killed the genre. There were fewer, and by that merit better, on Genesis, but practically every other licensed SNES game in the west was a shit Beat-em-up because they took less effort than Street Fighter II clones did. People gloss over just how bad the signal-to-noise ratio was on SNES in the west.

By the time Separation Anxiety came out, it was just white noise. Maximum Carnage was slightly notable because the SNES version supported 2 players, where most brawlers on that platform couldn’t due to the shitty slow processor it used, but neither game honestly had much going for it compared to the brawlers that Jaleco and Capcom put out on SNES or the Streets of Rage trilogy and Final Fight CD on the SEGA side of the fence.

There's a good arcade port of Undercover Cops on the SNES. I don't think it ever got a North American release. It's a solid Beat 'Em Up.

OpenMW isn't technically a mod, it's an engine rebuild for Morrowind that makes it work on modern PCs, on modern resolutions, using all the available RAM etc. Most of the best overhaul mods for Morrowind work with it as well. Getting Morrowind to work properly on modern machines used to be a complete nightmare of manually installing half a dozen patches and mods that would all fight with each other but now it's much simpler.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 is the 3D Sonic fangame that you never realised you needed, especially if you've played the rofltastic failures that the Sonic Team continue to churn out.

It even has its own Kart mod that can do local and online multiplayer, arguably better than the Sonic racer on Steam due to its own modding scene.

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when DOOM got modded with mouselook. Just that simple thing alone made the game vastly more playable for me.
I'm not really part of the Doom community but seems like there is a fair chunk of people that look down on others for using source ports and shit. I can kind of understand people wanting to try vanilla to see what the original game was like but purist types who say a game is 'supposed to be played' a certain way can fuck right off. Something like GZDoom is a massive quality of life improvement and I enjoy playing the games way more that way.

I'll also give my recommend for BuildGDX. I couldn't get Blood working properly in DosBox, played through the whole game with BloodGDX - no problems, great experience, would recommend.

It pays to just ignore the neck beards.

BuildGDX is great but I like Blood: Fresh Supply too.

Kingdom hearts 2 final mix english+widescreen+swapped buttons+ 60 fps patch. Changes all the text from Japanese to English, makes the game 16:9 instead of 4:3, swaps x and o, and makes the game 60 fps instead of 30. Game is nearly unplayable without the patches.

7th Saga for the SNES. Not a bad JRPG for it's time, but the localization made the difficulty obnoxious. The modded versions out there restore the game to a saner difficulty level.

Breath of Fire 2: Fresh Fire mod. It rebalances all the player characters to make them a bit more useful, changes the character's spell loadouts, and gives a better translation in general. It also fixes most of the notable glitches in the game. I feel it makes the game easier in general but more enjoyable.

Did you know that Skyrim isn't a porno game? Luckily, there are mods that rectify that.

Seriously, tho' Imperious is a great mod for Skyrim as it makes each race unique again. You get a starting power and another one you earn by completing certain challenges. You also have modifiers to each race. For example, High Elves' weapons and armor are weaker, but the enchantments are stronger.

There was also a perks mod, Ordinator I think, which worked great with it. Every perk tree was redone to be viable on its own. There was a third I used to use along with these two, but I don't remember it. It redid all of the magic to not make it suck, and there was a patch to work with Ordinator.

It's an older game, and one that kind of had a lukewarm response (I still like it) but the community patch for Sacred 2 Gold I think is essential for playing. Fixes a ton of bugs, adds in a lot of dummied out content as well as a ton of balanced loot.

Undercover Cops did get released in North America, but it was quite rare. It also kinda sucked compared to the arcade version, as most SNES arcade ports tended to due to censorship and being limited to one player.

I think I confused the Japanese release that had fighting game style special moves. It was pretty different from the arcade version, mostly for the better.
