Money Saving Tips - Discuss how you save money and spend less

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
Ordinarily I can't stand the stuff, so I'm not quite sure why I'm suddenly obsessed with it.
Have you been getting enough iodine and zinc recently?

My winters are mild compared to most, but even then I have an electric radiator and a fireplace; my fireplace is equipped for gas, but I hate the idea of a gas fireplace so I had the line plugged and burn wood. Outside of that, blanket layers and/or an electric blanket, and while I rarely use them in my locale, if I go somewhere more chilly, actual pajamas, something flannel to help you keep warm.

You can also fill the chest freezer up if you hunt. Nothing wrong with buying in bulk, but if you can lower the cost to the price of a bullet and gas to get out into the wilds.

With it being the holidays, I figure I'd come here and help people make a smart decision.
If you're gonna shop on Amazon and use the monthly payment plans they offer; go for the ones that's 0% APR, not this bullshit 10% to 30% they're offering. You're buying holidays gifts and shit, not taking out a loan for a car or house.

PEOPLE BUY HOLIDAY GIFTS ON PAYMENT PLANS?!

I scoffed when someone told me about the deals on the McDonald’s app but they really are great if you’re going to go anyway. Free large fries($3.59) with a $2 or more purchase is one I’ve used many times.
Glass said "Macca's" not "McDonald's". If you're in the states you're getting less food because they're legally allowed to put in more fillers than in Roo-land.

I guess I better move to Australia so I can get better McDonald’s then. Thanks you for this very useful advice.

Veterans Day in the US today. Free breakfast at Denny’s/IHOP. Free lunch/dinner at Chili’s/Red Lobster/Olive Garden/CiCi’s. Free coffee at Starbucks, free donut at Dunkin’. On Monday free buffet dinner at Golden Corral, free haircut at Great Clips/Sports Clips. There are tons of local deals too.

For those who never slaved for Uncle Sugar, most of these places don’t check ID or ask for a DD214.

Will this work if you're a former future Marine?

I'm not sure how reliable this is still since its from a 25 year old book but you can check the PAW/UAW equation to check how well your budgeting is going or conversely how fucked you currently are.

The first step is to find target net worth is which uses the below equation:
targetnw.gif

Second is to compare it with your real net worth (cash, stocks, crypto, precious metals, etc.) and
-If your real worth is 2x above your target worth or more your a Prodigious Accumulator of Wealth (PAW)
-If your real worth is less then half your target worth your a Under Accumulator of Wealth (UAW)

Its not a perfect equation and is not that reliable when your in your early to mid 20s and just starting a job, but it does make decent median term goals with an actual number to work towards.

Not accurate anymore because things have changed and I'm STILL doing shit.

Stop buying dumb shit.

No, seriously, its amazing how much money you can waste on even small shit. Sometimes I cringe at the shit I used to buy and how I could've saved that money. Even today I do dumb shit like buying headphones I don't use, or food that end up expired.

I started going to the supermarket only when there are discounts and deals, buy in bulk and stop buying stuff that will spoil too soon or I wont ever use like random "useful" utensils. I then saved the discounts to a spreadsheet. At the end of the year I saved almost $5000, and that's just supermarket money.

Cars are another money sink, I barely use mine ever since I got transferred to the city so I got a lease instead. In some situations that would be burning money but I never get even close to the mileage limit and don't have to pay extra for that, which is how they screw you over. But if you essentially live in your car with a 2 hour commute every day then FFS buy slightly used in cash, don't buy new and finance it. Get a japanese car like a corolla or an accord that will run for years with minimal maintenance, don't buy german, and don't buy korean since the engines are shit and will blow up.

Don't fall for the fashion meme, nobody cares, that's also something I used to burn money in like a dumbass until I realized only insufferable fashionistas noticed. You can get a tailored suit for less money than one set of supreme clothes or some other shitty hyperbeast brand just to look like a hoodlum. But if you reaaaaaally want that retarded no-taste look then go to repfashion and buy some replicas, most come from the same sweatshops that make the real ones.

As for real estate, there are no hacks its all fucked. If you live in a city with a coast get a house boat, that's the best option now I guess.

Just tell them you forgot your wallet, and you’ve got to got get it and you’ll be right back, and then just cheese it.

I went to Denny’s for a free Grand Slam, then IHOP for the Red/White/Blue pancakes, then Starbucks for free coffee, then Sports Clips, then Great Clips, (for a coupon for a haircut later), then Smoothie King for a free 20oz smoothie that I got upsized to 32oz by also adding their app on my phone, then Texas Roadhouse for a coupon, (for a dinner later), then Olive Garden for lunch with my wife (who had a gift card to cover her meal), then Buffalo Wild Wings for boneless wings/fries for later, then Chili’s for dinner, then Dunkin’ that evening after dropping my kids off at gymnastics. Make sure to order water to drink when claiming these free meals. These days a glass of OJ is $4 and a cup of coffee is $2.50.

The only store where I was asked for ID was at Smoothie King.

Remember that these folks don’t want to waste time calling the cops, since the amount you’d be attempting to “steal” would be below the threshold for any kind of charges except MAYBE a ticket and even then you’d have to figure out how to hold the person there for an hour or more until the cops showed up.

I’m pretty sure Golden Corral will be asking for ID on Monday for their “Veterans Appreciation Dinner”. They have every previous year. I was surprised that Roadhouse didn’t, they have every previous year.

I don’t know whether “Stolen Valor” laws would apply to someone trying to fraudulently claim a free smoothie, but I seriously doubt it’ll ever be tested.

Almost forgot to mention: Online shopping.

If you are in Canada this is the forum for online deals: Redflagdeals
I m not active on it but I used is a few times to get some good deals on tools. Pretty neat.

And the American version: Slickdeals
Seems to be better than the Canadian one I would say.

I also got a browser extension for Amazon that tracks the prices for till up to a year and shows you when the price bottoms out but I forgot the name. Nice tool too!

Are you talking about camelcamelcamel? I remember using it once or twice years ago but haven't really touched it since I don't really buy a lot of stuff online anymore.

Expanding on this (all of the following sites seem to be either owned by the same people or are affiliated with eachother as they all feature one another in their footers)
Australia - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/
New Zealand - https://www.cheapies.nz/
Singapore - https://www.cheapcheaplah.com/
Worldwide (but seems to be mostly Australian and American coupons) - https://www.couponese.com/

I'll put this here and this is validates what I have been saying about living in another states where that they get you on other taxes.

This is just a and old good old boy in the South and I stumbled on too as you know I like to cook.

It's a long and rather boring video but it's background noise for me while I'm working on something But he again validates what I have been saying about those Hidden taxes that just KILL you in the long run.

This guy just goes through his supermarket and buys his usual stuff and...

1. The prices are close in a lot of ways in the Silicon Valley Region. Some of the items are even more expensive as well.

2. Close to the end of the video @ the 1:08:14 mark He talks about what he paid and shows the amount of taxes/assessments that are placed on his food. His base cost is $63+ Dollars. Add his taxes and assessments and total cost is $81+ dollars.

If I bought everything that this gentleman purchased with the taxes on my food it would total close $68.00 There is no tax on basic food items.

A difference of $13 Dollars in my favor. If I make my usual 200 Dollar purchase I'm going to be paying $40+ Dollars additional cost just for food.

So yes California has one of the highest property taxes as well as cost of living. BUT you really have to do your research before you move to another state or even another county.

Otherwise you are going to get burned. That is why I did not move to Texas or Oregon at the moment, because I knew from my perspective I was going to get nickeled and dimed to death.
