Hm. Well, that puts a different light on things. I guess the question is, Why is Sonic such a freak?
My question is why are there so many hedgehogs? Like I know the black one is shadow, but where'd the white one come from? Isn't having one autistic blue hedgehog enough?

The white one is from the infamous Sonic 06 dont ask why i know this

Just say Game Grumps. That's the socially accepted answer.

Knuckles is an echidna, and Tails is a fox. /sperg.

(Unrelated but Spellcheck thought I meant 'enchilada' rather than echidna, made me chuckle...)

Sonic is just a holdover from a previous character design concept. Originally he was just a throwaway character in a super mario world takeoff clone / competitor that probably wasn't expect to go anywhere (though they might have hoped), so they didn't plan for him becoming the sega mascot and needing a more streamlined character model for advertisements. What's more surprising is it's taken this long to change his belly and arms.

As a fan of Greek mythology, gamer and something of an amateur zoologist, I've used Echidna often enough where my spellcheck at least recognizes it now.

Also while looking for Queen's Blade pics... I mean

Is that so? I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Things rarely work out as planned, even with multimillion dollar advertising campaigns. You never know what designs or characters are going to click with the public (or shareholders, etc). I mean, who could have predicted that Quicksilver was going to be so awesome in Days of Future Past? Still, it does make the fact that Sonic appeals so much to both children and autistic manchildren all the more interesting. They really stumbled onto something that just 'clicks.'

My main question is why does he attract so many Autisics?

I think its something to do with the bright colours and relatively simple design, not to mention all the fast, hyperactive movement. I don't know, it's just a guess. I've seen some interesting theories tossed around these boards though; one of the better ones was that Sonic is "edgy" enough for autistic people to feel like they are somehow partaking in his coolness, while at the same time not so rebellious as to make them uncomfortable. Can't remember who originally had said it though...

Incidentally, I assume that Sonic's arms were originally a different color from his body due to graphical limitations (sprite size, resolution) of the time: Making his arms a different color was the only way to differentiate them from his body and thereby add expressiveness to the different poses. Just look at these Sonic sprites versus these Tails sprites and think consider whose arms stand out more and whose arms blend in with the rest of their body. Naturally, by the time they introduced different hedgehog characters in the 3D games and in contemporary handheld games with higher pixel resolution, this wasn't an issue.

It's the same reason that Mario has a mustache: In the original NES sprites, it was the only way to distinguish his nose from the rest of his face.

Of course, to Chris all that matters is "SANIC'S ARMS WERE NOT BLUE BEFORE AND THEREFORE MUST NEVER BE BLUE."

I feel like we can get an autistic Highlander battle between Chris and the kid that drew Gotta Go Fast, especially since Gotta Go Fast Kid was in the vanguard of saying FUCK YOUR ARM COLOR

The only thing that I can come up with is that people with Autism have trouble relating to other humans, which extends to fictional human characters such as Link and Mario. Sonic features a cast that is mostly anthropomorphic animals other than the antagonist. They feel like they can relate better with an animal like Sonic or Pikachu than they can with Ash. This is further warranted with their My Little Pony obsession.

One thing this reminded me of is that, allegedly, Thomas the Tank Engine is popular among autistics, especially standing out from how normal children absolutely love the talking engines, but that series is noticeably absent from all the things Chris likes and subsequently ripped off. Did he never have any kind of wooden trains, just Transformers and LEGO?

Thomas The Tank Engine is more of a British autist thing.

I wrote about this phenomenon for my dissertation. I understand the appeal of Thomas to autistic children - trains are popular with autistics, the series has a lot of emphasis on order, the emotional content is simple and comprehensible, concepts like engine numbering and locomotive classes appeal to the autistic mindset. I'm just not so clear on why Sonic, of all the talking-animals-with-attitude franchises, should have the same kind of appeal. If I were to formulate a theory right now, based upon my very limited knowledge of the franchise, it seems like there are a lot of characters who fit the formula of [x] the [unusually coloured animal]. This makes the characters "collectible" in the same way as the robots of Transformers, the ponies of MLP and the trains of TTTE. I could be talking utter crap here, and there's some factor I've missed due to not being very acquainted with the Sonic universe, but that would be my guess.
