My beef isn’t that Jax ended western enslavement of blacks, nobody deserves to be fucking enslaved, my issue is that the ending is done in a super pandering and patronizing way that was clearly only written to gain “woke points” from Twitter and Reddit. A better way of handling it would be have Jax end slavery and then show us just how different his world is from ours instead of just showing him in “African clothes”

You know, you're correct, and I feel somewhat "bleh" about my last post. This is why you don't post when you're halfway awake.

All the same, while I'm trying my best not to get "mad on the internet," it's just tiresome at this point to see developers do this (what feels like) disingenuous pandering to placate the outrage mob, especially in a game like Mortal Kombat which only exists because it shocked its way into the scene back in the 90s.

It's... I dunno. It's like watching a metal band you loved years ago for their "fuck you" attitude release a new album that sounds like old men wringing their hands about cyber bulling and telling you to go vote Democrat and drive a hybrid.

It's just really goddamn annoying that we're doing this dance yet again.

Also, I didn’t buy the game, so I’m not really angry, in fact I’m more amused by the stupidity. I mean even many of the more well received games of the last three years like Hitmans 1+2 (I treat them as one megagame in my head), Uncharted 4, and Spidey PS4 have the occasional Drumpf/modern political jab in them, but never anything as extreme or retarded as “JAX MADE WAKANDA”. You can’t even get mad it, because at that point it’d be like picking on a disabled kid who pissed on the carpet.

This. As big an MK fan I am I passed on the game and cancled my perorder. I'm going to miss playing Shao Kahn, but I can't stand this song and dance routine from game developers. It makes me less and less tolerant of it appearing in games I buy.

Again, plenty of other popular games like AAA games like RDR2, Uncharted 4, Dad of War, Spidey, and the last two Hitman games have snuck in references to Drumpf and current year politics, key term here snuck in, this game on the other hand seems to have the subtlety of a brick crashing through a windshield when it comes to cultural commentary, which is part of why I find Jax’s ending to be unintentionally funny. Boon and Co. should just stick to fantasy, sci-fi and comedy, it’s what they’re best at, not political commentary

On the other, though, this disappoints me, as it takes a lot of Jax's character development and rests it on racial politics. Jax has been around since MK2, is a military commander and superior to Sonya Blade, and has done all he can to be a major backbone of the Earthrealm fighters through until the reboot. He's been in most of the MK games since his debut, and been a strong, well-rounded character who has gone through a lot of shit, including having his arms ripped off and replaced. This woke bullshit cheapens that, IMO. They could have done so much more with his story conclusion, including addressing his clear PTSD in the new timeline dealing with everything he has, and they squandered it. Shame.

I can see what you mean. Like in modern Hitman or Spidey the most they do in reference to Drumpf or CURRENT YEAR is make have random NPCs make off-hand references or sneak a little jab into a random lore note most people will never fully read or in some cases not even pick up, with Jax they they basically just scream WAKANDA FOREVER on a loop for the full duration of his arcade ending.

Even then, they still could’ve went the African liberation route and actually shown him defending Africans from invaders with his tactical knowledge instead of just cutting to him in “African clothes” and saying “he did the thing, he stopped the bad wypipo”

Just played with it for an hour or two, it remains to be seen how much microtransactions will impact my enjoyment of the overall game, but time will tell. I just went to the Krypt to see what it looks like, and witness the Shang Tsung intro with my own eyes.

The gameplay is really tight and sharp, with really, really robust tutorial and training modes, NRS continues to be the best fighting game studio out there when it comes to putting together a total package.

These people are legitimately autistic, the ending is weird and kinda dumb, but it's not worth this huge collective chimp-out.

It's not like Jax was this incredibly well-defined character with amazing lore, he's literally black army dude with metal arms, and imo, he's probably the most blank-canvas character in the series.

Forgot to mention this, but Frost is an unlockable/purchaseable character, you can either unlock her through story mode (finish Chapter 4 iirc), or pay like $7 to unlock her from the get go.

They used to do that in the PS2 era, but that was phased out by the time X rolled around. I guess they wanted the player to feel good about beating the ladder mode.
