Damn shame since 9 has one of the best stories of any fighter I’ve played. I think the time travel shit is probably what ruined it. I have a feeling that the much cooler sounding “Netherrealm vs. Earthrealm war” from MKX’s post credit scene was gonna be the original conflict of the story, but they decided to opt out of it in favor of time travel so they could nostalgia pander with the old cast instead of being forced to build upon the MKX cast
Agreed, it's hard to write a good time travel story. I think it did a good job of reminding us of the multiple time jumps in the series since the last PS2 game though, but they needed to bring in someone who could have pieced it all together better. Like this is what a Narrative Director is for. Also, they have to stop making Liu Kang the main character who always wins in the end. MK 10 was a refreshing change from that.

Time travel is best used as an allegory, that’s why it worked for legacy of kain, it was mainly just an allegory for things like genocide, running away from your past, and mastering your fate

Well, I can see partially why they did this, they want to avoid having to do MK Armageddon 2.0 again, so they are throwing some twists and turns to derail that.
Not entirely satisfied with how they've pulled it off, but I can see the narrative objective in doing so.

They could’ve done a war without everyone dying, like they could’ve had them be forced team up together at the end in order to take down a greater foe, like an accidentally resurrected Onaga, thus resulting in Raiden and Liu coming to an uneasy truce
Besides this one, Liu kang hasnt been the main character nor the bloke that wins everything since what, MK4
i mean you could argue he wins everything in MK9 but thats probably because its a reboot of the first 3 games where he wins everything and really raiden is probably the main character in 9 as its his actions shaping everything

The only real time he didn't win was when he died, but the PS2 games weren't tournaments until they went up against Blaze. In that one Shao Kahn finally did something. That at least led into two really good Mortal Kombat games, MK 11 though feels like they picked up some new baggage in the storytelling department. If anyone seen their current team you will see what I mean.
Also, does Frost remind anyone of the first Borg Queen?

true though i guess they decided that they had tried to replace liu kang like 3 times and none of them had proven anywhere near as popular (seeing as each of them besides cassie were a one and done character this isnt that surprising)
what baffles me is they spent all this time hyping up evil raiden, and hes in the game for only slightly longer than old sonya. before being replaced with his past self.
Everyone is talking about that Jax ending, but in Shao Kahn’s intro dialogue when you go against Kollector, Kahn literally says “make outworld great again.”
My friend showed me the Jax ending a couple days ago, and we both did our griping about it. I then made a joke about how Shao Kahn would say some variation of the MAGA slogan. I of course didn’t actually expect it...

Stupid pointless outrage about some Mortal Kombat character making a jab at Trump that isn't even offensive to begin with. Because villain makes reference to Trump = Trump bad:

I know it’s horse deader than Chance Carmichael at this point, but I still can’t stop being amused by how hilariously retarded the Jax ending is and the fact it was meant to be sincere makes it even funnier. Like you can just tell that writer was some white, obese, Californian who was patting himself on the back and telling himself that this is some high-brow shit that’ll get him a VGA nomination. And like many others have said, you can just fucking tell that the artist had zero clue what men in West African countries wear so they just typed in “African clothes” on fucking google images
I'm kinda surprised by all the chimping out over Jax's ending. I don't play the games, but I have the cinematic movies on YouTube (after really enjoying Injustice 2's, though all the MK ones are no where near as good). I only watched a handful of the individual alternate endings though, cause they are all fucking AWFUL. I'd honestly not be shocked if that's the busy work they give the diversity thots so they don't bother the people with real work to do.
I think the animations were really good, and there was some decently done action set pieces. I heard complaints, but I think Cassie and Jacqui look a million times better and more feminine than X.
As for the main story, with out spoilers it was very mediocre. Never particularly awful, but definitely the worst of the three.
After I felt they did a good job last game completely changing the status quo and adding a ton of new characters, while keeping a health mix of fan favorites, this was just a mess. They kinda threw any idea of a plot on the back burner for nostalgia.
And worse of all they spend no time on the solid gold of young and old Cage. They get like 10 minutes of time before both getting a bullet wound and disappearing. His voice actor is probably the best they got(I do not like Steve Blum Sub-Zero), and they are really good writing his character, but he's often pushed to the background in all three.
This story really sends to suffer from the way they do their story mode where it jumps from character to character. This is a problem even in Injustice, but most of the games they do ok at making it work. It's a mess in this one, with most characters story lines being uncompelling at best and completely superfluous at worst.
And in the end there story didn't really matter. Everything got erased and rebooted with God Kang rewriting it all. That's a pretty shitty corner they wrote themselves in.

I think it’s the fact that they’re trying really hard to make themselves sound smarter than they actually are that makes the Jax ending such a mess, versus say the endings in the previous two games that weren’t amazing, but would still either give neat little vignette (i.e. Johnny playing Stryker in a movie) or provide a neat little bit of lore (like giving us more info about the species Ferra/Torr come from)

Start to get the feeling the reason this game turned out be such a shaggy dog story in terms of plot is so they can do future games without cringey bullshit. I get this inconsistent tone between what NRS apparently wants to do and what the diversity crowd wants, so all the worst of the diversity shit is pushed as far away from the parts of the product that matter in the long term while essentially keeping the story from moving too much farther forward so they can point to diversity shit bombing hard as the worst part of MK11 so future games don't have to include it.
This would let them actually resume the plot and get back to doing what they want now that they appeased the woke assholes insofar as they could without doing too much long term damage while still giving themselves a means to move forward minus that shit.

Okay, there’s some stories going around online that they took out Johnny Cage doing the “okay” hand sign? Because of that stupid “white power symbol” thing? Did they really remove it from the game?

Since when did a person with their pronouns in their Twitter bio even go near this game? WhoTF do the writers think their fanbase is?
Anyways, The Krypt is awesome in this game, probably the best thing about it TBH (as well as best Krypt so far). The exploration aspect is very good as you get to look around Shang Tsung's Island in a 3D plain (unlike the stages and Shaolin Monks which has fixed angles). Seeing some of the stages from this game and previous ones at a different angle is quite nice, travelling to different locations and no jump scares (so far, maybe).
It's very similar to MKX's Krypt but in 3rd person, free movement and a visible character. He looks OK. Just a nameless man, travelling to Shang Tsung's Island for reasons.
Oh and...
Ermac falls from the Pit bridge and dies on the spike which would probably disappoint an Ermac fan I know. I can't say for certain if this is canon or just a gag for the Krypt only.
I had a good half hour session at the Krypt, spending my story mode earnings and now I need to get more money but I can't be arsed to do towers right now.
