Tbh, the mediocre story mode and predatory MTXs are pushing me away from this more than wokeness, I usually play as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and the ocassional gunslinger like Erron, Cassie, or post-X Sonya, not Shao, Jax, or Johnny.

My biggest gripe would be story, 9’s story was amazing and X’s, while inferior, still had some damn fine moments, 11’s sounds like a nostalgia pandering clusterfuck

According to /r/KiA they did, but I wouldn't trust it too much.

They realize drumpf wasn’t the first person to use the “Okay” sign, right? This isn’t like Swastikas where prior to the Nazi use, it was mainly just used by ancient civilizations or Asian countries, you can find scenes where they do it on fucking Hey Arnold

Story fucking sucked and we're gonna do it all over again. Wonderful. I'm really glad they put effort into MK9 and 10's stories just to take a massive dump all over them.

Also so many characters just straight vanish from the story, what the hell?

My biggest issues with MK11 story-wise are the wasted opportunities.

Let's say you're one of the people who've been a fan of the series since it began. You even like what Armageddon was trying to do (even if it failed at it in many ways). MK9 and 10 were still a treat for you in that regard, as they had numerous callbacks and references that showed that even though there was a continuity reboot, most of the old guard are still present somehow in continuity. Several were even playable. Even characters that absolutely no one liked like Kobra and Hsu Hao got shout-outs in MKX. The expanded content even was hinting that a few favorites like Havik were still around and kicking, suggesting that we'd see them at some point or another.

MK11 has.... None of this. Even though there was tons of fan clamoring for numerous characters that were in previous games and by all accounts have every reason to be there, like Rain, Reiko, Sheeva, and so on, there's none of them so that more focus can be given to the new blood, and it even goes so far as to shaft some of the better established characters from 9 and 10 in the process. There's a lot of focus on the new blood, but none of them really have a chance to shine. Which is bad enough but they then throw all the good shit from MK9 and 10 under the bus for good measure. Way to take a giant shit on the lorefags, Netherealm.

All of that brings us to the big issue though: The character designs. There's no question that the female characters in MK11 are fucking hideous compared to the previous games. It's fucking Mass Effect Andromeda-tier. MKX took a bit of a step towards toning some down, but also brought some good designs like Mileena's, and all the newcomers looked fine. Cut to an edition later and welcome to potato land where all the women are hideous, the best-looking girl in it has a Let Me Speak to the Manager haircut and has her face permanently covered. I don't know if they just hired Bioware's cast-offs or what, but it looks like shit.

I just reinstalled MK9 and MKX to get a feel for how jarring the design changes were, and I came away with this impression for the ladies.

MK9: It was clearly retreading MK 1-3, so they basically portrayed many outfits as updated versions of the classic versions for the modern era, adding just enough changing of details they didn't all look like complete clones. We had corsets and big boobs galore, and with the exception for Sonya, for who it looked borderline idiotic (hell, her classic portrayals were more modest), it fit the Outworld ladies like a glove.

However, when you compare it to other fanservice games like Dead or Alive, no noticeable boob jiggle that looks silly and a lack of sexy clothing damage (most of it just looks painful) means it wasn't all that stupid in retrospect.

MKX: This game was now covering the MK4 onward era with a timeskip, so they didn't have to follow nostalgia as strictly as before, so they instead updated the outfits of the Outworld ladies to "fantasy modern" while going for more realistic and restrained ones for the Earthrealm ladies, who were in the military and thus that made perfect sense.

While most of the women got mild to moderate boob size reductions, it was frankly an improvement over that hideous samey template all the ladies in MK9 were apparently based on, only serving to make them look more unique, while their outfits were basically just given some further unique twists in most cases to flesh out the personalities of the ladies, like Kitana's conspicuous bling, Mileena's focus on emphasizing her sex appeal from the neck down to compensate for her face, and Tanya's outfit, which was sexy yet practical for her acrobatic fighting style.

MK11: Okay, now it's just getting a little stupid.

While most of the Earthrealm ladies didn't suffer too badly in most cases, some even being improved on in some ways, some designs were just asinine.

Kitana's is the closest to looking decent, and probably the least bad of the bunch. Jade and especially Skarlet however went from loose fitting outfits that were at least logical (Jade's fighting style would require an easy to fight in outfit, and Skarlet derives power from the shedding of blood, not having to fight her clothing to get to it to drain it for power made sense), they went to unusually conservative outfits that have been compared to burqas with some degree of truth for no apparent reason.

Frost, however, she stands out as one of the weirdest changes, wearing a Dark Souls like outfit when her female Lin Kuei outfit would have worked with some modest tweaks at best and it still would have hit the sweet spot between attractive and practical just fine.

Most of the newcomer ladies aren't too terrible, with Cetrion looking surprisingly good design wise, but even the better character designs suffer from having any hint of female attractiveness hammered down to almost nil, with any hint of cleavage apparently haram as well for most of the ladies at the same time.

And, as was mentioned elsewhere, all the guys still get to look like half naked underwear models with no changes whatsoever between all three games if they didn't have more practical alternative outfits before.

They really fucked up 9 storywise, rebooting the first three was a great call but they wrote themselves into a position where it was extremely difficult to move forward and continue playing the nostalgia angle without doing a bunch of stupid shit. Although I kinda like the angle of,
MK9- Raiden: "I must go back in time to save the world" accidentally makes things even worse
MK10- Raiden: keeps fucking up over and over again
MK11- God of Time: "I must go back in time to stop this retard Raiden"
You can't keep pretending to kill your characters and then finding reasons to let them wear their classic outfits again. I wish they would just fucking stop with the apocalyptic end of the universe shit and go back to finding excuses for tournaments. The game has always been most fun when it was just a mythological Enter the Dragon ripoff.

Alternately play off the inter-realm politics shit for maximum effect. The power-struggle involving Mileena in the aftermath of Shao Khan's fall was the most intriguing part of MK10's story and it's basically used as set dressing.

Either way, backbench the apocalyptic shit.

After playing through story mode you can really see just how much Nether Realm loved their facial animations. I hate to break it to them but any time they did any close up shots it looked like the animators took a few hits of acid and figured that's how you animate a face. What the hell did Nether Realm do to their franchise to make it this bad. Reused blood textures for Fatalities are also pretty bad, news of Fatalities DLC, terrible outfits for the sake of going woke, terrible endings for the characters, one of the worst storylines I've seen in any form of entertainment. I don't think I'll be returning for Mortal Kombat 12.

Don't get me started on Cassie's move set relying on crotch shots, even Johnny had one. Also, Ronda Rousey can never be given a chance to voice act again. I thought she was bad in dialog for the fights, but in the story mode? My god she's more wooden than Brie Larson. I could get a 2x4 to do a better job. Just paint it and I'm sure it'll even give off more charisma too.

That being said, Seems we're getting Terminator, Ash and the Joker as DLC characters. Only one I'm looking forward to is the Joker if it's true.

Knowing them, they might try to showhorn in Gangweed jokes, but make them completely unironic.

Also, it’s a damn shame they went time travel route to begin with, they should’ve done a Raiden vs. Liu Kang war, then had them be forced to set aside their differences by pitting them against a Thanos-tier motherfucker like Blaze or Onaga. They’d still be able to keep many of the veterans around as revenants like in X and they could focus more on building evil Raiden’s character instead of doing an incoherent nostalgia pandering clusterfuck

At least Onaga was shown in one of the endings and in one of the endings in MKX it was shown twice that Shang Tsung would return no matter what so they could set it up where he tries to bring his army back and try and take over the Realms. This war after all weakened every realm. They don't even have to have Raiden get defeated by the Deadly Alliance either. Though it would be nice to get Quin Chi back. He's done the most out of any villain in the series.

This is probably the biggest fault of the insistence to stick to the status quo. I really don't get it though. I get that this is a dumb game, people just want to see Shao Khan, people just want to see Scorpion and Sub Zero fight, myself included. Does anybody actually like Raiden's "traditional" role as Zordon from Power Rangers enough to keep it preserved? Same goes for the Special Forces, is anybody interested in the arc of the Cage and Briggs family?

Even in nostalgia I never remember Raiden being this lame, he was presented more like some mad god who for unclear reasons decided to possess the body of some poor ass rice farmer just to kick the shit out of the tournament. I mean, just watch his OG ending

I think Liu Kang's ladder ending from MK9 was my favorite and wish they went a route more like this, but I guess it wouldn't have given the Boring Ass Americans enough to do.

I think what seperates the MTXs in this from say MHW’s is that in MHW the cosmetic MTXs are entirely cosmetic (i.e. gestures, communication stickers, and receptionist tiddee outfits) and have zero impact on gameplay, whereas to my understanding Kosmetics definitely fall into this category, while Gear actually gives an edge in combat. So in this case, Gear is basically shark cards and I have to give Boon superberries to make my Sub-Zero as strong as Monthly Tugboat Troy’s. And they also charge for fatalities, which is even worse since even in MKX, Klassic Fatalities were a free update while the Easy Fatalities were only there for lazy plebs.

Also, in MHW, the cosmetic MTXs only make a small number of the cosmetics, with the vast majority coming from either offline single player or free MMO event quests (as in they only require internet access, not a seperate payment or Xbox Live Gold) and the single player content doesn’t even require me to download the day one patch in order to enable multiplayer, meanwhile MK11 requires me to use internet for Krypt, something that was offline in X.

You clearly didn't play the game, because if you carefully looked at it for yourself, you'd see that the overall design of the game isn't pushing you towards buying anything (if anything it does a lot to push you away from it). MTX-heavy games offer a stick and a carrot to guide players towards MTX, but this game in its current form only offers a stick and no immediately apparent and easy-to-access carrot.

The game isn't geared towards MTX, it has them, but it isn't built around them, mainly because there's no way at all to buy Skip Tokens, Konsumables, Koins, Souls or Hearts. The last three currencies are what you use in the Krypt, the 1st two are used to skip/ease hard fights in the Towers of Time (which we will get to in a minute).

You can buy Time Crystals, but the store that uses them has only like 6 items that rotate every day, and they literally tell you which mode unlocks every item (from what I've seen, it's between the Krypt, Towers of Time and AI Battle modes).

The Krypt itself has around +600 boxes, their total content+price is exactly the same for every player (meaning that if you and I were to open all the boxes, we will get the exact same material per box and in total), but the server changes their order around procedurally for every player, mainly because they want every player to explore the Krypt for themselves without having a complete guide to consult, and thus maintain the sense of suspense (which completely works btw, my breath stops every time I open a box). There is also a nice side effect is that you really get nice surprises when you play online and see the different customizations ppl do and compare them to what you got.

IMO, The main problem is two-fold:

1) The economies of you getting the unpurchaseable currencies are complete fucking wank: You get so little for your actions that it feels like it will take heavy and sustained effort to finish the Krypt, and there's no real way to pay $20 or $2000 or whatever to just unlock everything (so they're not giving you the option to cave and give them $$$), so you feel like it's pointless to proceed much in the game. This especially goes for the Souls and Hearts (1st is granted through winning games, the latter through doing Fatalities/Brutalities)

2) The Towers of Time are fucking unbalanced and way too punishing: I didn't go into this mode too much (I want to play the towers when the economies get fixed, so I'm doing the story mode until the patch comes out), The modifiers are far too difficult to deal with, and the challenge just becomes frustrating rather than challenging, fighting Mohammed Ali while blindfolded isn't going to be a satisfying challenge, even if there's a theoretical chance I may get it done.

My personal theory as to why these things happened is that NRS were very, very intent (and misguidedly so) on protecting the Krypt mode from getting spoiled by YouTubers who get early/leaked copies.

Like, if they made it all very easy, then the internet would be flooded with guides/videos that tell you where and what every single box is, and while making the mode internet-proof (to a point obvs) can be a noble purpose, the lack of communication regarding what the Krypt is and how it works (even though it's really fun to go through), and not having the day 1 patch address the economies so players can proceed with the game are huge mistakes IMO.

For now, we will see how things progress, but I have a feeling that NRS will fix it. Throughout its history, it has shown that it does listen to its community.

Also if you think that the "XL" version will give you everything out of the box then you are mistaken, it will probably only have Shao Kahn and the Kombat Pack 1 fighters, and you will have to unlock the Skins/Brutalities yourself, and you will have to do it 2 years after everyone did it).

Sorry if this got too TL;DR or preachy, shit is kinda complex to go through and explain, this Max Dood video does a good job of summarizing my thoughts (minus the personal theory):

Sounds like it’s less a case of the game CURRENTLY being MTX heavy and more a fear that NRS has built this grindy system to encourage people to buy MTXs that’ll get implemented later. Sometime we’ll get online games that manage to prevent themselves from implementing buyable in-game currency like the previously mentioned MHW or many of Nintendo’s online multiplayer games, but other times you get shit like GTAO or SF5. I guess for now we just wait and hope that NRS is allowed to step in and balance the game and WB doesn’t drag its tentacles against the game with its scumminess
