The money goes to their favorite political and social groups and towards stuff like more tracking or deplatforming. It's certainly not being spent on making a working browser or enhancing privacy and safety for its users.

But Mozilla seems keen on killing its popularity. They hired teams of antagonistic faggots to spew attacks on users on various social media sites and forums who dare question Mozilla. Any time that they roll out an obviously hostile change to users they have employees lined up to attack and censor any public complaints. They also do things like change the UI constantly, or hide obnoxious changes in obscure places like aboutonfig that the average user cannot deal with and even some sophisticated users have given up on dealing with. And do things like throw advertisements into the browser or more user tracking without getting consent from anyone.

They are basically controlled opposition. The original Firefox team is entire replaced. But not in a Ship of Theseus way where the replacements work the same as the original. The new team is about dismantling the browser and destroying its popularity. Accelerating the death of non-Google owned programs.

I didn't think privacy concerned people used Chrome or Firefox. Both of those have offshoots that strip undesirable elements away completely.

Not really, all chromium browsers have manifest v3 and all gecko browsers will have this thingy. It can be disabled or worked around, but it's still there. The only way to not deal with it is to use a browser that's not based on Chrome or Firefox.

Firefox used to have a window that would show all the media on the page and much younger me would use that to quickly find and download Flash files off Newgrounds. They took that away from us for… reasons. Fuck Firefox, man.
