Before I figured out piracy, I would record songs by putting my MP3 player up to the speaker. A lot of the music bordered on ten minutes per song, so I'd stand still for ten minutes just to poorly pirate music. Taught me patience, at least.

Only to a small degree. I am a renegade (as with so much else in life) in that I do not use stramin services, except to smoke new music. I use mp3s and lossless on modern "neo" players, ie dedicsted audio players..
I use to be partial to Fiio. Sound is above and beyond the apple ipods. The battery died on my last one (Fiio x5 iii). So I put money down on an astell Kern alpha kann. Cost me a grand. Sound even better, but the firmware wassteuo from the fiios I had owned. Fiio firmware was also tape and bubblegum.

That said part of me still misses the brilliance of the ipod wheel database. If someone could give that with the quality of my astell Kern alpha kann...

Depends what your budget is. Astell Kern is pricey. Fiio makes good stuff intends of Sound fidelity but the firmware is the bare minimum. You should peruse head-fi.org, as there are a lot of premium and near premium dedicated audio players available. I am a big believe in keeping a physical digital, and I would never use my phone for serious listening...

I was a little shitbaby (like 10ish years old I wanna say) back when MP3 players were a thing and didn't know how to put new songs on them.

But my parents were kind enough to pre-load a bunch of Alvin and the Chipmunks songs on there, meaning I could finally(!) listen to You Spin Me Right Round (Chipmunk Cover).mp3 while playing Kirby Air Ride. Thanks mom :)

My only MP3 player I owned at 10-13 had 128mb of storage and I crammed it full of low quality songs from Limewire. It was such a piece of shit that I had to keep the battery lid shut with a hairtie. At one point I was given the white stick iPod shuffle but it arrived DOA. I kept everything on my phone in the end in my late teens. I'd still enjoy an iPod classic with the B&W display and click wheel, those were pretty cool.

That is why I am still too stubborn use my Ipod Classic over my smartphone because the wheel was a great input device. As much I detest Apple, they manage to hit it out of the park with the Ipod compare to most of the competition.

I think the reason why MP3 players are not as remember since outside the better brands, most MP3 players were shitty quality or if it was decent it wasn't built to last or repair.

Smartphones are terrible for music. Sound quality is not as good. Do check out head-fi. There is so a small digital audio player subreddit if you can stand that shithole.

The sr-25 is not quite as expensive (also not as weight as the kann)..

I have read one particular iteration. Of the walkman is pretty good for the price point, and that it can in fact take 256 or even 516 gb SD cards...

I agree re the ipod classic, and of course how terrible apple is as a company. Samsung not much better...

What is your price range. New MP3 players are either super cheap or super expensive so its either under $100 or over $200 or more..
I could see myself spending $200 on something that was of good quality. Mainly just want something better than my phone.

How much storage do you need? A Sony Walkman maybe a good bet...nw a105 I believe is the model that was better regarded than the others. Look into how you can get higher capacity as cards than advertised.
One thing I found was that my.oldobrsry.had.a fair amount of music at 128 kbps , which is very low resolution. 320 kbps is optimal.

Sony makes high end Walkman for $300 and up for new. If you want something more classic and willing to search, an Ipod classic Gen 5 and up at least I know can be modded for new battery, better storage, and third party firmware if you like modding.

This was my first MP3 player, iRiver SlimX something something. At the time I just began to need to use public transit every day so it was a really handy thingie, even with the disadvantage of being quite large on account of using CD-Rs.

Best MP3 player ever - "Zzap" (or was it plain Zap?) - was a chinese player that had the luxury of being touch-screen and you were able to delete files straight off (wich helped alot if you downloaded some artist's entire discography without knowing much about said artist, saved alot of trouble working and being able to sort out the good songs from crappy ones and doubles). I haven't found said MP3 ever since my friend accidentaly broke it while i borrowed it for his trip overseas.

Worst - Anything made by Andersson. Never had a Andersson MP3 player that still functioned after 6 months.

And why yes, i still use 'em! Never been a big fan of using my phone for playing music.

First MP3 player I had was one of those sticks that took a AAA battery, had a whopping 1GB of storage. Still have one of them, though its gotten incredibly filthy due to the rubberish surface getting gooey and picking up all the dirt in the drawers. As for music piracy, technically speaking I never pirated any music when I had this. My family would just check out CDs from the library and rip the contents.
