I am deeply, deeply confused. Right now, though, I'm agreeing with the "wife dies, dude retreats into drugs, goes a little nuts and creates headmates" camp. I knew of a guy IRL who went on a serious cough syrup binge (he may have been mixing it with some other shit, I don't know) and some vital bit of his brain went ping into a dark corner. Completely wrecked him. Murray may be off the drugs now, but it's entirely possible he damaged himself mentally, physically, or both in the process.
Split fifty/fifty on it being a sexual fetish or a plain old autistic obsession. Could be both. If he had some mental problem before his wife died--being HFA, for example--the subsequent breakdown could only have worsened it.

This old dude reminds me bit of the girl who was behind the Warrior Eli hoax. She created 71 separate people, most with Facebook accounts, complete with pictures, who all interacted with each other online. It was an elaborate story of a man and a woman, impossibly young yet with medical degrees, with like eleven children, one with terrible cancer, and the mom died in a car crash and on and on. It was actually pretty amazing, the level of detail she put into it. The scope of Murray's weird online antics is small potatoes in terms of the level of his fantasy life and all the characters he created to weave his tale of feral pre-teens with autism who are also computer scientists and their coterie of friends and family.

You know, I thought something about feral autistic sex-obsessed computer scientists sounded familiar, and if Murray is really so Web 1.0, I shouldn't be surprised. The whole narrative reminds me a lot of @Faye Kane Girl Brain. Maybe that was his inspiration.
EDIT: Holy shit, even down to the pretending to be a hot young girl instead of an ancient, withered husk.

He could very well be mentally ill but it's pretty unlikely that the headmate stuff is legit. Faking DID is pretty popular in some tumblr circles.
Detailed knowledge of 'headmates,' descriptions of interactions between them, and wish-fulfillment shit like 'dead wife pedo fantasy' are pretty big red flags that you're dealing with a bullshitter
