Damn you, Redditor! You've exposed our evil plot to make sure a show that was cancelled 25 years ago never comes back!

So much for that Turkey Day bump. They started at like 2.1 million and that's because Joel moved the goalposts.

I think every Rifftrax change they've done is "transphobia" related so they don't get yelled at. There was a funny bit where someone complained about The Matrix riff having one on Twitter and it became clear that they had a pirated version because the one you pay for had been changed. I don't think they care much behind the scenes.

Heh. I remember those jokes too.
Mike: "Why all this insanity? The Wachowskis seemed like such normal guys."
Kevin: "Well success changed them, Mike. Success and the hormone therapy."

All of this is amplified in the most recent season - Patton understands how to deliver lines, but Felicia acts like she's in a high school improv class. Emily is more of a throwback host but the woman who voices her Crow is literally doing
Milhouse Van Houten's voice. Jonah actually comes off the best by default.

Joel said the third movie will be.....Plan 9. Which Rifftrax has done at least three versions of with different jokes. He also implied that it was really hard to get the rights to it and I think he might be straight up lying?

Lying.

Over the years Joel AND Mike have made numerous excuses over why the refused to do Plan 9 during the original MST3K run. It's a long demanded episode and there is a reason WHY it (and Reefer Madness) were the first movies Mike did when he started his own movie riffing work once MST3K ended.

The only "rights" issue I can see is Joel wants to use a colorized version of Plan 9 (which would be privately owned and not public domain) or an HD print that is similarly privately owned and would require licensing. Or alternatively, Joel wants to include the film script table read Jonah was a part of that was recorded during Covid as an extra and that's creating issues.

I'm not surprised offbrand Kickstarter permits them to change funding goals and the date when it's "fully funded or nothing." The desperation is palpable.

Even Redditors are fed up, with a few people whining about all the "negativity" about a failed project.

Joel has really been collecting performers on the live tours. Basically everyone who ever stood on stage during those shows has some sort of role to play now and nobody ever leaves. I think it has more to do with the idea of falling in love with all these fringe characters and not being able to fire anyone rather than any sort of creative intent.

And we never got a proper explanation for Jonah's status for the third tour, but it seemed for a while there like Joel did a "farewell tour" to set up Emily as his touring replacement (and she did tour once after that) but once they were able to Kickstart a 13th season, then he was stuck with 2 hosts and added himself to the mix to keep the donations coming. I don't think it's any sort of worldbuilding agenda more than the idea of being afraid to fire on-camera talent and/or deal with online pushback about having done so. So we have Kinga, her Mom Pearl, her clone Sinthia and HER clone Mega-Sinthia running around on Moon 13 who're all essentially the same character because there was a time during the run or on a tour when they filled that same role.

I totally agree that it's bad for the show, but until some character leaves the reboot, I feel like the explanation is that Joel the Showrunner is a character hoarder.

One of these things is not like the other

and they REALLY don't like the female Crow voice.
Wut?

THEN WHAT IS THE FUCKING POINT OF KEEPING CROW IF YOU'RE GONNA FUCKING GENDER FLIP HIM?!?! WHY CAN THEY NOT JUST CREATE A NEW ROBOT?! IT COULDN'T BE BECAUSE THEY ARE EITHER FUCKING INEPT OR CANNOT MAKE A MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER SHOW WITHOUT A CHARACTER THAT WAS IN THE ORIGINAL BECAUSE FUCKING CONSOOMERS WON'T BE ABLE TO FUCKING CLAP WHEN THEY FUCKING SEE IT?!

I didn't even know that this new MST3K thing was happening until my favorite consoomer started trying to get people hyped for it on social media. I didn't finish The Return, Cry Wilderness was pretty good tho, and didn't even bother with The Gauntlet. I was put off by their Ghostbusters 2016 approach of if no one is talking then no one is laughing. They never fucking shut up. Anytime the movie's quiet they have to ALL BE FUCKING MAKING JOKES and so few of them land right. It was just mentally taxing. And now they're getting some chick in to do Crow. I can already see the clap back, assuming it hasn't already happened.

"You stupid CHUD! It is actually YOU who is the manchild! Do you not know that robots do not have genders? Ergo Crow both was and wasn't a woman. You are just sexist!"

Neve mind that it was the show that brought the same character back and decided to make the only change they could to the character because he's a puppet. They couldn't be fucking asked to make something Goddamned new. These people cannot create. They can only take what was and twist it into their own perverted image.

EDIT:
I had no idea how bad this was until I went back through the thread. They want four million dollars to make SIX episodes?! It's a fucking puppet show with sets made from spray foam and gaffer tape. Where the hell is all of that money going? Not to the rights holders of whatever public domain dreck they're watching. Is inflation really that bad or does paying Patton to be a lesser Frank cost that much?

You know, I know some long time Joel fans who because of the shit show that was this revival, now believe that Mike was always really the heart and soul of the show. And that's what I've always thought personally. Obviously ktma was rough, and the first comedy Central season being not much better is just chalked up to being a new show until they got their footing. But I think the show actually did depend on Mike to have real quality, and what do you know he was brought in in season 2.

I tried to watch one of the revival episodes and it was bad. So bad I couldn't even make 5 minutes of it. The rapid fire riffs like every second of the movie has to have a riff of some kind, fucking awful.
iirc Mike was already there on season 1

From what I've read, he was brought on officially in season 2 I've never heard that he was brought in on season 1, but I'm no mst3k historian. Definitely wasn't there in the ktma days.

Point is that Mike was more important to the show than the Joel fans used to believe. They used to treat him like he was just a replaceable hireling. It's just interesting to me that this revival has just been so poor that it changed some people's minds as to how vital Mike was to the funniness of the show.

I used to have a color version of Plan 9 on DVD and it had a commentary track with Mike by himself riffing the movie.

iirc I saw chatter that apparently TCM has an HD widescreen transfer from a good print, sorta like that good copy of Manos that came out a little while back

I'm almost certain he's in the credits for a lot of S1 as a writer. Pretty sure he wasn't on staff for KTMA, and I don't recall him coming up in the show's riffing like Frank did in KTMA

even showed up in a few of the skits.
I def don't recall that.

I do recall Mallon voicing the Demon Dog Leader, but that and the Isaac Asimov Doomsday Satellite were the only S1 visitors I can think of off the top of my head?

You'll be happy to know that there's not just a female Crow, there's also the male Crow from the Netflix run who is only in 6 episodes! And they just dub the voices over because 2 sets of actual puppeteers run the bots! Now WHY does it cost so much?

Anyway, they're almost at 2.6 million out of 4 million with 13 hours left. The Reddit and Facebook groups have gone nuclear and it's only going to get worse if they don't hit the goal. Joel was teasing "extending" it yesterday, so apparently this Kickstarter knockoff is exclusively used by scam artists.
