This is just the government side, though.Ok so here is how Leafland does it.
USA and Canada have no similarities when it comes to leave. USA works employees to the bone with fuck all security.
Facts:
Canada has EI leave which is 16 weeks paid government leave $638 per week if you quit your job due to stress, illness, domestic violence, caring duties, etc. It is a single form to fill out and a phone conversation.
Quebec has 10 weeks domestic violence leave at full pay.
D2 also has her own workplace leave, which although only legally require 3 days paid sick leave include 26 weeks unpaid leave where her job cannot replace her and must make her role available to her when she returns (most people are on EI pay over this time period).
D2 is also accruing annual leave 4 weeks per year- so she may have banked up months and months of leave.

Fun fact about Canada: We have private insurance companies. They provide supplemental insurance -- things not covered by provincial healthcare (depending on the province, dental care, prescriptions, eye exams, etc., may not be covered by public healthcare) and things like life insurance, short term, long term, and permanent disability, AND things like family leave from work. Nearly every employer -- certainly white-collar places like CHR -- offer some form of this. It's not only possible, not only likely, but an actual certainty that Deedee has some kind of supplemental insurance through her job. She may be getting partial pay (you usually get somewhere between 50-80% of your usual income during your leave) so if she's a bit thrifty she should be fine to take time off and still keep making mortgage payments, etc.
And even if she doesn't have this specific sort of insurance and is living off savings or something, it's not impossible that CHR let her take an unpaid leave of absence. Just because it's not required by law doesn't mean employers can't let her do it. She doesn't have a very glamorous job, but she's also not working the overnight shift at the gas station, either. She has benefits, and she might even have an employer that just generally treats its employees well.
Not directing this at you personally, but this DD's job speculation is kinda dumb. Right now, there's really no way we can know what happened, unless she says something or someone from CH Robinson's HR department signs up and risks their job to spill some tea. Her situation will gradually become clear, whatever it is. We don't need to invest too much energy in this.
