And if you point this out and how no other racing series would screw a top 5 most consistent driver like this, Nascar doubles down with "yOu jUsT GoTtA wIn!!!!!!"

Anyone, and I mean anyone, can have the chips fall just right to see the checkered flag. In a good car, in a bad car, any car. But it takes talent to consistently finish well.

Win and you're in is how a guy doesn't win a title after dominating a year.

Win and you're in is how multiple drivers got screwed out of a championship for getting intentionally wrecked.

And it doesn't matter to Nascar because all they care about is being WWE on wheels. They're already talking about having the championship at Daytona. Why not flip a coin and see who gets the trophy? It would be fairer.

I like F1, but I cannot stand its fanbase. So honest to god, I can relate.
 
The win and you're in model is absolutely fucking garbage when it comes to racing. Just look at how many fluke wins you see yearly. I can comfortably say that it's at least once a year now.

It wouldn't be so bad if you had to at least win two races to automatically qualify.

Win and you're in isn't quite as bad to me as how you could technically win every race in a year, then someone gets sick of this shit and wrecks you at Phoenix and someone else is champion.

Don't get me wrong, it's still fucked.

That is the moment that soured me on the playoff system- '15. Matt Kenseth gets all pissy after Joey Logano wrecks him for throwing 2 late blocks in a row, drags his car out on the track 100 laps down and boots Logano. Championship hopes: over.

There is no other motorsport- no, no other SPORT in the world where one person holding a grudge can ruin your entire season with one move.

To be honest that moment kind of soured me on Logano too because all he did was complain on TV. If I was in his situation, I don't care if the whole world thinks I had it coming, I'm sprinting to the back to choke that sorry motherfucker like Bowyer going at Gordon.

Old post, but I'm at least happy Penske eventually got his own back over Tony George sabotaging the rapid growth of American open-wheel racing in the '90s.
Once Mansell went to CART in 1993, it got really big in Europe. For a brief time, it was probably the 2nd-most popular motor racing series in the continent, next to WRC.

Then the IRL split happened, and it never got quite as popular ever again.

The Captain deposing and exiling that smarmy fuck alone earns him a statue outside IMS.

It's always been hard explaining to people exactly how catastrophic The Split was, even at the time. What's gotten me lately is the additional problem that the IRL failed at what it was really supposed to do: Give Indiana short track dirt boys a road to higher levels. Pretty much all of the series champions came up through sports cars or over from CART. (Tony Stewart is maybe the exception to this but he wasn't a series champion.)

Anyway, last night of the North Wilkesboro Revival was last night and it was pretty cool. Probably 3/4 of the crowd was just there to see Junior and it showed, but it was a good show anyway.

I appreciate the effort at trying to get American sprint car/midget racers into Indy, but Tony George forgot the following things:
A. Nascar was far more lucrative at the time
B. So long as IRL cars were formula-style, they attracted formula drivers (former CART and so on)
C. The eternal F1 logjam at the highest level meant you have a pool of foreigners with much greater experience at driving formula cars at higher levels than dirt track racers- this gets even worse when there started to be more road courses

Heck, Indy is so populated by European formula drivers that even its feeder series (Indy Lights) is mainly foreign and made up of guys from F3, Super Formula, etc.

I'd add a few more points from an European perspective to this.
D. The junior formula system of Europe doesn't just handle people from Europe, they handle people from Americas, Asia, Middle-East and Russia. Everyone knows that if you want to be in F1, you should be in whatever junior formula series happens to be hot at the moment to get noticed. Thus the talent pool is massive and loaded compared to some guy doing sprint cars.
E. There simply is more money and coaching to develop a driver to Karts to Formula Ford/Renault to Formula 4 to Formula 3 and so on. Indycar is seen as a good alternative to those who don't want to languish in the cutthroat atmosphere of European junior formulae while they wait for a new seat.

That said, it was a remarkably arrogant move from Tony George to even attempt such a split when all they did was hand the eyeballage to a series that didn't try to screw itself over.

Erik Jones, with absolutely no hype and viewed as washed-up, has won in that same car.

He blew out the points, he's still significantly above the cut line. If I were him I'd be looking for a win but it's not necessary right now.
 
Off-topic but;

Not quite new to yet another motorsport and let me say, modern NASCAR kinda bums me out. It's like modern WWE although with less virtue signaling and shaming the old fanbase

Listening to the current commentators (Bowyer and Gordon) makes me wonder what they actually think of all the changes that are happening around them.

Or hell, Harvick and the Busch brothers since they are still racing (Kurt injury notwithstanding) and have to watch their sport die a slow death.
