Bit of a short thread as the website itself isn't particularily cow-ish. The basement-dwelling denizens of the forum's underhive, on the otherhand...

Nationstates

Nationstates is a social-engineering project designed by Max Barry (of Jennifer Government fame) to simulate how the average bored teenager on the internet would fare in running, operating and maintaining the daily functions of a government. While less sophisticated than other games that simulate geopolitics, NS was, nonetheless, still a monumental achievement during the wild west days of the internet, and garnered up to 130,531 users by 2007 alone.

Nationstates was known, most infamously, for a brief legal spat with the United Nations, of all people, over copyright infringement, which resulted in Max dilating for several days before changing the name of his in-game international legislative body.

Regardless of his eccentricities, Max is not much of a lolcow, himself, and his antics are dwarfed by magnitudes less in comparisson to the average Nationstates affectionado.

Typical fare you might find on the site include

That site is full of people with too little to do. I guess it's like most other websites in that respect, but in particular the denizens of NS seem bored.
I'd like to imagine NS is just what happens when you collect a bunch of KF and SA rejects in one place and gave the worst members the golden mop

Probably a bad idea to mention that I've been fucking around on NS for years at this point. It's more out of habit at this point for me though. The site had its autism back when I first discovered it (I was shown the site as a wee little history sperg by a now long-forgotten Portuguese friend) , but post-2016 is when everything really started going to shit in one way or another.

I was always drawn to the silly RP forum side of things any way ― and the art. If there's one thing I can thank NS for at least, it's that I got into line art and pixel art that way. Now I hardly touch the site except for the one or two threads I still participate in with some good acquaintances, who also barely touch the site. I still do graphics and line art every now and then though, because it's a good way to pass some time.

Also, Bear Sterns is based.

Anyone remember the failure of Nation States 2? They were going to add simulated warfare, economics (trading commodities, embargoes/blockades, etc), and a lot more in-game functionality for popular elements that would no longer be relegated to forum RP.

I think NS2 died in open beta due to lack of funding, poor design, and plentiful amounts of fun exploits and griefing opportunities. I remember voting my nation onto the leadership position of the largest "alliance" on my "world/server" through a glitched election, then making my newly won leadership position a president-for-life position and kicking out the now deposed leader nation and then forcing all the other nations in the alliance to embargo/blockade the deposed leader.

Wasnt this the website where people could register their won country they founded on islands in the middle of nowhere?

Not much to say about the topic in general, but I looked up Kiwi Farms in the search, and found that someone already created the Commonwealth of Kiwifarms an "inoffensive centrist democracy" which rules the agricultural sector.

Pretty shit joke writing though, fucker couldn't come up with a better currency than "null-dollar." Like cmon, "silver shekels" or "Chris-credits" are much better ideas and I'm rippin those straight off the dome

There is child labor, an abolished court system, and weed though

I have lots of fond memories of roleplaying a srs bzns nation on NS, back when it wasn't entirely terrible. You should probably get in a section on Nation States 2, which was a bit of a farce at the time.
I used to really be into the nation-building aspect of the site. Sadly, I was interested in making art and factbooks for Dieselpunk WWI not!Frances and medieval merchant states, neither of which had a sizeable community in the NS and FB&NI forums. Past Tech is underappreciated. Don't even get me started on the lack of love for Paleo-Tribal societies.

I was going to make Cwcville at one point, but got beat to the punch. Shame, too, since I liked the simple flag I cooked up.

On one hand, you could pick out insane shit said by users on this site and make us look crazy.
On the other hand, we are self-aware and will also rip on our own spergs and loonies.

I will say as a potential community watch, it definitely has potential. Especially some of the hot SA-tier NS General takes on politics.
NS also attracts a lot of semi-elitist narcissists who think they are personally the hottest thing ever with the best ideas for an infallible state.

Honestly the RP side of the forums is the less cancerous, because you can really just ignore the shitty RPs and stick to in-group roleplays.
Plus its a total insider meme farm.
