Neo Retro Shooters - The intricacies of the renaissance of the "genre" known for gibs, quips and labyrinths.

You can use this excuse for every genre created before year 2000.
Not at all. I can name a myriad of platformers, beat-em-ups, fighting games, puzzle games that feel nothing like their predecessors. The shooter genre is the only one that's suspended in time.
Someone suggested Mortal Sin a few pages ago:
The HUD in this game looks like shit.

-Game tries to be purist without straying too much from its roots: "Wow *genre* really sucks because they don't try anything new."
-Game adds RPG, stealth or roguelite elements to mix up the formula: "Can't really be considered a *genre* because stray too much from its roots".

Gamers were really happier during the 8-bit era playing a bunch of 2D platformers they couldn't pass the first stage without using cheats.

To the people who enjoy Boltgun: Did you play past the first chapter? According to Steam's achievements, over 70% of you haven't. Because that game falls off harder than a one-legged drunk with vertigo trying to surf.

Those later levels where the devs just made a giant symmetrical shape and called it a day are terrible. Which hallway did you just go down? Was it the grey one with the giant skulls on the wall, the grey one with the giant skulls on the wall or the grey one with skulls on the wall? Incorrect answer. You were supposed to go down the grey hallway with the giant skulls on the wall. DUH.

It gets way more enjoyable when you know the map and where to go.

"B-but DOOM was full of mazes, too!" Yeah but Doom had the decency of giving you a map and actually populating the levels with enemies. In Boltgun the levels are empty if you're not in a purge.

That's another thing. If a "boomer shooter" locks you in a room and starts spawning mobs instead of placing enemies naturally through the level, it's not a boomer shooter. Serious Sam is not a boomer shooter, despite being older than 98% of Twitter.
I'd summarize that game with

Some of the weapons were fun and you get some good fights. It's a bit too easy (which is my usual problem with the genre, that the difficulty depends on how much you abusing the quick save, or reading a guide on where the secrets are). I don't remember getting lost anywhere since nearly all levels are very linear and never go for too long.

Also the argument about summoning is absolutely retarded. Doom summoned enemies, and going "Technically it's a monster closet that opens up only when you do a specific action" is just being a faggot.

Do any of these nu boomshoots have good melee? I really like shit like Dusk where you can deflect bullets with melee weapons and shit.

here's one I forgot: Beyond Sunset. it's a street samurai type game where you mainly rely on your agile movement and your Hanzo steel to defend yourself as ammunition is kind of rare and you can't block bullets with an assault rifle.

there's also Fortune's Run, but oh boy this one is a doozy. Fortune's Run is trying to be a maximally autistic immersive sim and the difficulty is very unforgiving. so the learning "curve" is not so much steep as it is a vertical wall in that you will repeatedly have your asshole reamed out until you learn to operate the controls and mechanics like a pro. it just hit early access, and its dev team consists of (IIRC) two people with day jobs so development progress is glacial. its projected completion date is Q4 2026, lmao. it is, however, an extremely cool and ambitious project.

hard disagree. Doom notably does this a number of times and has a specific mapping convention for it (putting a bunch of enemies in a room isolated from the rest of the map with a teleporter at the end). the heart of "boomer shooter" game design is the monster maze paradigm, in which levels are hostile labyrinths filled with both static (switches, locked doors, etc) and non-static (enemies that respond to your presence) obstacles to your progression. the only major difference Serious Sam brings relative to other stalwarts of the genre is the scale of combat. also note that while the enormous arena flooding with waves of enemies is Serious Sam's Thing, both First and Second Encounters have plenty of areas filled with naturally placed enemies.

I wouldn't describe Mortal Sin as a boomer shooter really. It's definitely a weird game.
Not bad. Gives me real heavy metal magazine circa 1980's vibes. Wish the hits felt a bit more meaty though.
Agreed but it's made by just one guy I think so I'll cut him a break.

Adding roguelite elements in a FPS Doom clone isn't even original. This genre is just so tired. I want to see something new already.

Renamed thread to Neo Retro Shooters and divided the games in 3 "categories":
-Neo Boomer Shooters
-Retro Stealth Shooters
-Arena/Horde Shooters
With this we can cover more games on this thread and move on from the terminology bickering.

Definitely more visually appealing than Hands of Necromancy, I will give them that, but still looks like your basic Heretic-like though, also way more expensive than HoN.
Speaking of which, HoN is getting a sequel:

The circle jerk is what's killing it. Small indie devs gather in discords and try to impress each other with the purity of their projects because other devs are the actual audience they try to wow. It's not much different than the regular indie faggotry that spawns shit like Sunset and Goodbye Volcano High, they just toe a different line.

"Roguelike" is getting a very bad name now because of industry hipster faggots slapping it on everything, even Bethesda with Starfield's "procedurally generated planets".

Will things come full circle and everyone realizing most games are just trash now and you might as well go back to just playing Rogue/Nethack/Slash Em in a terminal if everything is gonna be "roguelike" ? Fingers crossed. 'Cause nothing gets bitches wetter than when I start to go on about my Nethack Undertaker character I've been saving since y2k who was never meant for this world.

Tried DUSK, it sucked (There's more to Quake than being brown and low poly, this also applies to HROT). Tried AMID EVIL, it sucked (Celestial Claw is metal as fucking fuck though and deserves to be in a better game). Tried Ion Fu- Maiden, it sucked (nothing happens when I interact with the mirror - really, nigger?) and also ran like absolute dogshit - 40fps when nuDoom does 1080p144 on ultra? Fuck off. Tried Project Warlock, sucked me in like a million dollar whore and 100%'d it on hardcore. Everything else didn't interest me, in particular ULTRASHILL did itself in with a fucking officially sanctioned buttplug mod or whatever that was.
All of the above was blown the fuck out by Dimension of the Machine for the Quake remaster (inb4 speedtrannies bitching that it doesnt' run exactly like their perfected 75Hz OG version - just fucking play that, faggots) - as much as I hate MachineGames for Wolf New Colossus, their did a stellar job with this expansion. Also Arcane Dimensions is grossly overrated.
I'd wince at these new games less if they were called something else other than "boomer shooter", this sounds like it was taken from a news article about a grandpa who went on a murder rampage in a local mall. Bring back the 3D Blaster term.
EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot about WRATH. This is the only one of the bunch that gets it. Apparently it's got a release date now, too - 27.02.2024. Five fucking years in EA, Christ almighty.

I’ll politely disagree with you on Dusk and Amid Evil, and say that aside from performance the biggest issues with Ion Fury are that it goes on for too long and every weapon but the bow and bowling bombs feel like they were made with a checklist.

On Ultrakill… the lead dev is a faggot and its lead artist is a pooner that says the angel you fight at the end of the first two episodes is one too. There’s probably something to be said about that connecting to the project’s complete lack of restraint and how it becomes progressively more unyieldy with each update. Doom Eternal and Turbo Overkill do the DMC as FPS thing much better IMO.

DUSK's main issue is that despite trying to ape Quake it both looks and sounds worse than it. Shooting must feel good in a shooter, but to achieve this guns must feel powerful and enemies must react appropriately to being shot. Weapons in DUSK sound like pop guns and monsters don't even recoil when shot, not to mention that their models just kind of flip over instead of having a proper death animation.
AMID EVIL has similar issues on top of being a way too busy visual mess. The enemy design is even worse than in DUSK, too.

I wonder why Ultrakill is so highly praised by people (to the point of being the highest rated shooter on sites like Backloggd)?
Trannies and gays have astroturfed the game with their gay bullshit and Hakita supported it.

I mean, it's also a game with a high skill ceiling and cool shit you can do, but let's be real, that's not why everybody jerks off over Ultrakill anymore.
