Neo Retro Shooters - The intricacies of the renaissance of the "genre" known for gibs, quips and labyrinths.

Is the mouse president supposed to be a parody of anyone in particular, I'm not american so I don't know any presidents from the 30s? The actual game does look decent too

Uh-oh, looks like their shitty knockoff of Ion Fury's in trouble.

How hard is it to get Duke from Gearbox and give it to Voidpoint? Seems they haven't been hit.

All the projects Slipgate is directly involved:
Mass cancellation incoming.

So you're saying it might mean total 3D realms death? It looked like it was on its last legs anyway, can't say I'm that sad considering their new projects would probably turn out rushed anyway, they probably wanted to release Kingpin to prove worth to the publisher and they failed miserably. I hope Sin reloaded gets full control given to Nightdive in case that gets shafted as well

Per Scott Miller of Apogee, half of 3D Realms and Slipgate are gone.

Do any of these nu boomshoots have good melee? I really like shit like Dusk where you can deflect bullets with melee weapons and shit.
You can try Arthurian Legend. It has some really nice mechanics like perfect blocks and timing your bladed attacks to enemy melee attacks to parry them, stuff like knives for offhands instead of shields if you want to play risky and just parry instead of block and some neat spells.
I struggled to recommend it for a while because
  • Inspite looking like your regular retro shooter and having requirements as such, the game ran extremely poorly due to the engine they've used. This has apparently been patched this year.
  • It's also prone to crashing, and the highest difficulty doesn't let you save mid-level(levels aren't exactly massive with more than 30 enemies being the upper range of enemy counts, but enemies are deadly and you can't just unga everything unless you're really good). Or at least it should, but upon re-loading a save it lets you. I've found that quicksaving sometimes crashes the game so I just play as intended
I haven't played since the patch myself beyond a quick try to confirm that I can infact break 60 fps now, which it seemed to be the case.

Not exactly boom shoot but the Zeno Clash Series(1,2) are good first person brawlers that are like a decade old now. I enjoy 1 more than 2. There was also a third person brawler released this year in the same series that I've yet to play(next thing on my backlog) but I've heard is seriously fucking good.

Finally, also not exactly boom shoot but there's Fight Knight if you want a quirky and simple little dungeon crawler where you just punch the shit out of everything. Warning that the game's artstyle gets a bit harsh on the eyes in later levels. The fourth level in particular switches from dark red and black to eye raping white and light blue(fire and ice) and can really strain your eyes.

Edit: Also there's a not-Dark Messiah of might and Magic called Elderborn. This game is a bit tough to recommend because while I really enjoyed it, it's also barely holds a candle to Dark Messiah(can you tell I really like Dark Messiah?) especially with how very limp the physics feel, and how it gives you like 8 weapons but they can be boiled down to "slow block weapon" or "fast parry weapon". The game also gets good in my opinion in the second chapter, and there are only three chapters in the game, with the third being a very short gauntlet of enemies, and the first being a claustrophobic underground area of nothing but tunnels. It ends on a sequel hook that I'm not sure is ever happening but the developers worked on the semi-recent Postal Brain Damaged so they're still kicking.

And in the realm of la-la land never releasing but one can hope.
  • Corpus Edax, a melee only "immersive sim". Has a demo but I think is a one man project so it's probably going to take a while.
  • Shady Knight, also has a demo. Fully disclosure, I haven't played anything of the demo beyond to confirm that it is in fact a video game and have actively avoided any news or videos on the game because the concept and what little I played seemed god damn awesome.
  • Sorceress, not Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Also has a demo. Has some really cool magic concepts.
    • There was a second Not-Dark Messiah I had wishlisted but I forget the name.

Arthurian Legends has updated again today with a fix to the quicksave system and a bunch of other stuff.
How weird, I've had the game untouched in my library for two years and had gave up hope for any fix and then two major fixes in back to back months.

I'm not one for graphicsfaggotry but the aesthetics of Cruelty Squad, and this, are really making me not wanting to try either even though the concept sounds neat.

I played Cruelty Squad and I wasn't a huge fan tbh although the graphics and elements of the plot did have a charm to them. But recently I watched Pyrocynical's video on the game and saw there was a ton of depth and content that I didn't notice on my playthrough (Which I kind of rushed through), and I found it a really interesting deep dive (And more enjoyable than actually playing the game). I know Pyrocynical is considered a bit of a lolcow (This was my first video of his I'd ever watched) but he pretty much stays on topic. I would recommend the video although it is hours long.

I know I’ve voiced my concerns about Ultrakill having the potential to go badly off the tails, but the first part of the final episode they released a few weeks back is very good.

I don't think so. I think it's just going for a generic president, like what used to be common in cartoons.

Bro, there were only two of them from the 30s and one of them Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Big Three of WW2).
