As much as I wish something terrible would happen to kill Resetera I don't think it's going anywhere considering the shit they've already weathered, and that makes me sad.
ResetERA is going to inevitably collapse. It's not going to be a big spectacular fuck-up like the collapse and rebirth of Neogaf was, though. And in honor of this, I will make a bunch of alternative nicknames for the site in this post.
RidiculousERA has the kind of moderatorship you used to see in oldschool forums with maybe 100-200 people with a power-tripping admin/mod base. Back in the day, the forum would simply get a reputation as being a shithole and bleed out on its own, but in this current age, a site like MetastasisERA has its appeal to people who want nothing but positive affirmation within an echo chamber (provided the most insane of insane progressive viewpoints are what you want at least).
Because RetardERA is currently set up like an old Web 1.0 Forum, it has a very tight cluster of mods and admins who exert full power over the site. And unlike other forums, where the staff usually are just there to post laconically as the mood strikes and enforce the forum's rules, in ReperationERA, you toe the party line or else. There are thoughts that cannot be entertained, words you cannot say, concepts you are not allow to elaborate upon. It's the ultimate hugbox.
Everything about ReichERA is designed to reinforce this echo chamber, and because of this, you can't call out bad actors within your own midst. Any net rat knows that sunlight is the best disinfectant when it comes to staving off problems, but within the boundaries of RestrictionERA, this isn't allowed. Already, multiple times, this has allowed pedophiles to persist hobnobbing with the site's elite, but discussing those pedophiles, even when incontrovertible evidence of their wrongdoing exists and has been documented, is a ban-worthy trespass. All this on a site where you need an official email address (I.E. a company site, school, or government site), to even sign up, and ergo dox yourself.
While the toe-headed buttloaders of RepudiatedERA don't realize this, none of this is being done with any real interest in the party line or their political affiliation: It exists as it does for the sake of the admins, mods, and mod pets. Everyone else is just money to them and can be safely ignored. They don't care about anything they say they do. It's all about power and the ability to manipulate the outrage mob. It's a beautiful microcosm of every aspect of these morons sociopolitically. Even funnier, they actively go after any user that actively avoids interacting with specific users. Unfortunately the ultimate in hugbox technology also means that it's the ultimate echo chamber, and a mod aristocracy that allows certain users to blatantly violate the rules while others are held to a higher standards means there is a very clear-cut social class on the forum that does nothing but whine about social class. And this breeds dissent like no one's business.
The reason RetrogradeERA keeps slowly chugging along despite constantly bleeding users is due to a few reasons. First, permabans are reserved for known troublemakers. They throw tempbans at everyone else. While no one in a position of power will admit it, they need the revenue from people who view the ads, so they're actually loath to permaban unless it's a repeat offender. Second, the sort of people who desperately want a safe space will happily flock there on the grounds that it's the most progressive place in town. There's also a slow trickle of users who just don't know what RancidERA is, and, expecting it to be just another forum, join, only realizing they're dick-deep in crazy later on.
Unfortunately, the mere
concept of trolls and the fact that the mods (and their pets) are on the prowl for the tiniest infraction means that they've only gotten crazier and more paranoid. Even if sites like the Farms didn't exist, they'd pin all their woes on some other outside nebulous force. To hear ReductivistERA tell it, their hugbox is already overrun with
evil incarnate. That may sound insane, but the more astute among you may pick up that this is the
exact same fucking thing that many Autistic screechers on Twitter do - imply that the platform (and indeed,
all platforms) are already overrun with evil, and ergo, the mods have to crack down harder. As is the case on Twitter, this need to slay imaginary dragons suits the autistic aristocrats (autistocrats?) just fine, since it means more power for them to flex, but their doing this is also their own Achilles' Heel: It creates a situation that is
absolutely unsustainable: It drives away more and more of the normies, who quickly realize that the site's straight rarded and then go on to talk about their own experiences with that very site, which, in turn, tightens the noose a little more. This leaves the most devoted and most bug-fuck insane, who are emboldened to act eve crazier. We already have certain users unironically able to make death threats without repercussions, and the mods have been caught in unbecoming behavior repeatedly in the past. The site is currently on borrowed time.
The only question is in what way RetreatERA dies. It's either going to drive enough people away that it ceases to be profitable enough via ads alone, necessitating fundraising drives to keep the site running (which the Autistocratic Gentry will not be expected to pay, just the random users who will continue to be banned with clockwork regularity), which may keep the site staggering along like the exquisite corpse as the budget grows tighter and the userbase grows to resent it more and more. Alternately, the Admins and their mod pets could be caught in yet another scandal - this time one big enough that not even the entire team silencing anyone who discusses it will be enough to keep the remaining users from fucking off for greener pastures. Either one could take years to fully occur, but it happening is a foregone conclusion.
